Deep purple-black in colour, this was showing very young with a pronounced nose of dark fruit, iodine, anise, cassis, tobacco and a tad of bell pepper. Full-bodied and quite primary dark-fruit still with substantial mid-palate presence and excellent length. This really needed a couple of hours in the decanter to get going and I suspect it is holding more in reserve that will assert itself with another few years of cellaring. A beautiful wine and no harm in opening a …

Wow, great value in an overlooked vintage. Lush full after one hour of decantering

Tough one to rate. Way better than my last two and hoping it will develop more but not sure. Grand cru pedigree but not really all that together.

This dark violet color is accompanied by strong violet and tobacco scents. The luscious ripe black fruits taste concentrated, almost like the tartness of delicious black fruits. The acidity and elegant tannin are refined. There’s a very long tobacco black fruits aftertaste.

Exquisite and ready for prime time ! Extremely well balanced, no heat and no Napa esque qualities. This is a beautiful wine.

From a half bottle, this was bad. I think it is past peak. I've had many bottles of over-ripe Aussie Syrah and Napa Cabs that didn't last. This tasted like that. A hot mess that was still tannic yet already showing oxidative notes. I'm sure in its youth it appealed to folks looking for an over-extracted and over-oaked Napa wine in Bordeaux. That's not my cup of tea. I live near Napa and could easily buy cheaper versions of this …

I don't think it deserves the 94+ rating. It is good. The nose is ordinary, the taste is good and reasonable length

Pronounced nose intensity with notes of pencil lead, vanilla, mint, blackfruits, cassis. Well balanced palate of acidity and tannin. Medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin. The mouthfeel is smooth and integrated. Round tannin. Drinking well now. Decanted for 2 hours. In its peak windowing now.

Intense, rich, modern, cult style St. Emilion. There is notable bottle age, but the wine displays massive tannins clout, huge VA, intense sur maturite notes, and vivid fresh thyme notes. What is stunning about this wine is the fact that while crafted in an almost Napa cult style, the tannins feel true to its Bordeaux terroir. Thick and burley, but nuanced.

Plums, ripe blackberry, black currant, cassis, very fruitful nose, jammy, hints of leather and cinnamon; powerful, monolithic, forceful, but pure and refined nevertheless; very fruit forward but not entirely over the top; not my preferred style but very good

Pitch dark color. In the nose dense figs and plums with alcohol shining through. Medium+ acidity, fantastic palate with plums, blackberries, figs, cigar box - complex, dense, layered, with pencil shavings from the Cabernet Franc coming through. The ending shows white pepper and aromatic wood, with grippy tannins and it goes on and on for a long while. 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. This is in a great spot and will likely improve in a few years. …

I thought still slightly blue tinge on opening. Still plenty of years left. Heavy sediment, just as well I decanted. Very dense red fruit flavour, long taste

The one with Big Reds #3 (The Sail) : Big Reds Night #3 Dark berry fruit, black plums, scorched earth and ash. Palate is certainly big and rich with some slight sweetness amidst the softening tannins. Quite balanced and typical for the vintage.

Violet, blackcurrant, tobacco, oak, chocolate, cherry, licorice, forest floor, graphite. Didn't develop as much character as I had hoped.

not sure if just a bad bottle or whether it speaks to a greater problem. Seemed stewed, old. Sad showing. Have a few more and will open another to see. Have not had a good bottle yet, however. Disappointing.

This wine has sulfide issues that require a long decanti and an aerator would help too. It took about an hour to finally blow off. Once opened; the fireworks of boysenberry, Limestone earth, loganberry and oak too suite. Flavor indicative of it’s fruit aromas. One of the fuller bodied of the 2008 Right Banks. Does have firm tannins on the end. I would opt for marbled steaks, Lamb and other savory meats with this one. Given the sulfides; I think …

Dinner with the wine group (Terun, Palo Alto) : Purple, purple, purple; black currant, some minerals, some plums; palate is full bodied, rich, high tannins that have a bit of softness to it, black fruit, balanced 14.5% alcohol; medium finish. Honestly not as over the top as expected from its reputation, but lacking a bit of depth of more traditional producers. 90

Deep thick colour. Good nose long taste with a delicate dual level of flavour. Given the broad praise I found the wine slightly disappointing

Superb concentrated wine that was in a right bank challenge. Topped it. Full of fruits, jammy, aroma a bit blunted, hint of cassis, forest floor, minty, chocolate and fine structured tannins. Classy. It was opened 3-hours in bottle.

managed to hold onto this for 10 years, my last Pavie. as expected very rich dark berry admixed with a raisin-y quality. hints of cocoa. tasted blind and the crowd vacillated between california and bordeaux. The patriarch was able to put two and two together.

CWG Tasting - Bordeaux Right Bank (Hartenberg Estate, Stellenbosch) : (Tasted Blind): Deep garnet colour. The nose is intense and lustrous, with redcurrant, blackcurrant, strong liquorice, and pulped raspberry above which swirls earth, pencil shavings, soy, and black olive. The palate has a beautiful grip and density with well-managed extraction and concentration. There is some sweet glycerol to this powerful, intense wine. It has an incredible depth of fruit with penetrating liquorice, cassis, and graphite notes supported by lively acidity …

My best friends pension (@ PdV) : Beautiful and complex bouquet with black berries, vanilla, earth, stable smells and tobacco. On the palate ripe dark berries and plums, some beautiful and pleasant sweetness and beautiful acidity, chocolate and round tannin. A mouth full of great wine. Already a great pleasure, but will probably add in complexity and enjoyment over the next 3 – 5+ years. Great and lovely wine now already. 95+

Fabulously rich and sexy wine. Unctuous. Could smell it from across the room. Bright blue and black fruits laces with cocoa and spice. Tannins are still very present. Long finish I’ll try another in 5+ years, when hopefully some of the secondary and tertiary flavors should begin to emerge.

Good looking bottle with excellent fill and this did not disappoint. Should hang in there for another few years.
