Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Saint Georges

First of four. No notes but a general sense of dissappointment, considering the vigneron, the vineyard, and the recent notes on this wine. Maybe a defective bottle. Not bad, but never really balanced.

Decanted and poured an hour later. Ruby. Pine needles and black fruit aromatics. Medium weight. Predominant soil beside black and blue fruit-very Nuits. Polished and harmonious for a 2006 without any rough edges. Some remaining tannins. Excellent now.

Tasted double-blind from a small capped bottle as part of a zoom tasting. creamy, cherry, but a little dumb compared to previous - lactic. Palate is deep and Cureamy/chewy, nutty. From 1.55 ha in a highly regarded Premier Cru just up the mildly sloping hill from Les St. Georges, fully destemmed and aged 18 months in 30% new oak. Everything I hoped for. A bottle purchased at release. The start was promising, but in the end the wine was not worth the wait. Right after opening it came across as still youthful with cherry fruit and sweet vanillin oak. The mouthfeel is consistent, quite full-bodied, still rather tannic, but also with a beautifully suave texture. Double decanted 4 hours before pouring. Translucent light ruby. Menthol, earth, and meaty notes. Medium body, certainly not burly. Fruit in the black to blue register, light herbaceousness, excellent thread of soil and acidity, still some tannic grip. Not too blockish, quite elegant for Vaucrains, yet not the most complex or nuanced example.

I have found the 2006 vintage to have a harshness with rough edges. This is finally rounding out. Acidity is high, with dark cherry fruit and iodine. Tannins are still there but not bothersome. Drank it with homemade beef bourguinon.

Medium translucent ruby with distinct rusty cast. Beautiful nose of sweet sharp violets, full dark berry, saline, sweaty earth, iron filament. Layers of righteous, joyfully concentrated red berry and bright cherry fruit cut with anchoring iron, bramble, and light earth on the charged palate. I’m with Salil on this one. While not always a fan of 06 burgs that can be lean, this was hitting on all cylinders. Rickhand bittersweet, with red, black and purple fruits swirling together. I just enjoyed keeping this in my mouth for a while. A serious wine. I’ll hold my other bottle for at least 5 more years.

I've had some '06s that felt rather charmless and ornery - given this was a Nuits, wasn't sure what to expect, but this was absolutely stellar and one of my favorites of the evening. Medium to full body. This currently has the beautiful profile of an aged burgundy with heavy dark fruit and deep secondary and emerging tertiary fruit. PWTG Single Blind Tasting of five wines from the 2006 vintage in Red Burgundy. Decanted for 2 hours before tasting. Wine C My #5, Groups #5 Very closed nose, muted. Cherry fruit pokes thru with swirling. The palate is hard, four square, meaty and extracted with some spicy fruit that tingles the tongue. Very drying tannins, hard edged finish.

{#4 of 6 bought on release; sound cork removed with Durand} Rigorous, regal, still tough - not quite teeth-clenching, but needs hours to fully open still. The quality of the fruit and the completeness of the package are Grand Cru quality. Most of bottle consumed when opened and fruit both softer and more approachable after 20 hours. Wonderful but recommend you open the bottle in the morning if you want to enjoy it maximally over dinner right now!

{#3 of 6 bottles bought on release, perfect fill} Brambly, gnarly NSG fruit with the aromatics and elegance of Les St. Georges. Faded red color with some bricking on edge, very good showing. Held up well over 4 hours. Can hold but I will drink mine up in next several years.

Lunch with Gerald and Praelum folks (Famous Treasure @ Capitol Piazza) : Medium ruby, with slight fading edges. Pink floral and cranberry aromas, as well as some green fern. Rounded tannins, with a body that was rather substantial for Pinot Noir, and some good cranberry and blackberry fruit intensity, as well as rocket leaves and cloves. Still very fresh even after more than a decade. Nice!

Chevillon Survey (Brasserie Margeuax) : Much better than a weird 06 Roncieres served side-by-side. Aromas of fat and rich black cherry fruit with plenty of spice, potpourri musk and toasted herbs to add interest. The palate is rich and chewy. Cleary young with plenty of fruit and stuffing. In proportion and good now, but better with time.

HDH auction at Spiaggia; 6/20/2019-6/22/2019 (Chicago, IL) : Large-scaled, with some of the classic 2006 beetroot aromas. Surprisingly red-frutied, but this is a heavier, big wine too. I'm not fully convinced about the complexity here -- it's there, but this is a little dilute on the palate as well. Hard to make heads or tails of, to be honest.

Not in a great place right now. Tight with the structure overriding the fruit. There is a lot going on underneath, and this is well made with good balance. Secondary notes of tar and herb are nice, the fruit is nice, the whole thing is sitting under a bit if a tannic weight. I am hoping that more time will make this a bit more friendly.

The style I love. Sweet fruity nose with a hint of iron which you can't call minerality because it is'nt a mineral. Good palate nice sharpness and fruit. Enough tannins and power left to let it live for some more years but it has nice grippy tannins now. A little sharp alcohol which makes your cheeks tingle but in a nice way. Don't decant! It becomes more mature quickly and less pleasant. The rosehips take over then.

Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind (Chicago, IL) : Tasted double blind. Thought this from NSG, but slightly older. Meaty and still tannic with very good length. Firm and backward, making it come across as somewhat foursquare. Needs more cellar time.
