Really dark colour, almost orange. Ridiculously beautiful nose, honey, ripe mirabelles, orange zest, toasty notes. The medium bodied palate is rich, intense and slightly sweet, the acidity is crazy even for this producer and vineyard. Terrific complexity and length. Will hold forever if the corks work out. 18.5/20

Though written almost 8 years ago (!) I concur with Vino Ciclismo below. Still youtfull, silex. Off dry. One wonders if the acidity will ever mellow. No need to drink now: years to go.

Alsace BYO (@ Erik) : Peach flavors with a touch of cheese and salt. Good depth and a medium acidity.

11th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, not quite as poxed as last bottle, but still heading that way and flabby, drink up. Just G (15)........frustrating!!!!

10th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, heightened colour, tired, flabby flavours, slightly oxi, no zip and little mineral or typicity, just about drinkable. QG- (13.5)...as previously stated, irritating bottle variation!

clear botrytis. dry and decent minerality, fuller bodied, but the botrytis mattes out the fruit. would have preferred a cleaner pick

9th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, on form, proper typicity, dry, mineral, kerosene, etc., but now fully mature. F (17.5)…...irritating bottle variation.

8th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, heightened colour, slightly oxidised and flabby (creamy not tense) but with underlying minerality and kerosene which makes it pleasant enough if not what it should be, this bottle would have been better a year ago, clean bottles have scope for further development. G+ (15.5).

6th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, darker and with hint of imminent POX happily absent in recent bottles, underlying style and minerality still apparent and drinkable with some pleasure, unlike the frankly poor Weinbach Schlossberg Ste Catherine 04 openened before! G (15).

5th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, tad less chiselled and tense than Jan bottle, yummy though and bags of life. F+ (18).

4th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level - frankly it's hard to believe the change from previous bottles, this one clean and pure, the irritating former mid palate sweetness now resolved giving weight and roundness, all mineral and kerosene, finely etched, very long and complex, grip and drive to the fruit, just entering maturity from awkward adolescence on this showing. F+ (18) for now but with potential for much more......a proper dry, food friendly Alsace Riesling developing here, believe …

2nd of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, better, more cut, tighter and lighter, even some kerosene and mineral, drier if not exactly dry, odd yeastiness on back palate but more interesting than first bottle. G+ (15.5).

1st of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level - mid yellow, aging; surprisingly floral and rich for Brandluft, lacking the usual pronounced chalky minerality which can be so attractive, hint of kerosene; medium, ok length, not particularly persistent or complex, too rich and almost blowsy to my palate and falling into the all too common Alsace trap of retaining too much residual sugar to be an easy food wine, seems to be aging prematurely, so I can't see this shedding …

This wine still drinks quite nicely. Lovely golden colour. Nose has ripe fruit, pear and petrol. Light on the palate but showing nice ripe fruit. Starting to get old.

lustrous light gold. Spicy mineral zest, citrus rind, a little honeysuckle lift. Strong, lovely. Fleshy, good depth of flavour, some glycerol texture, mineral spice and zest at the core, finishing long and resonant with excellent fruit intensity. lovely drinking.

Rich and heady with loads of honeysuckle, lime blossom and candied citrus. It is full and layered in the mouth with plenty of citrus and a gentle creamy feel. There's real dimension and power and a cheeky lick of saline minerality freshening up the finish.

Canlis: fantastic balance, lovely petrol aspect, beeswax/honey, baked green apple, very nice floral aromatics, good concentration. This was spectacular and was great (although a little lean) with the fois gras, and even better with the honey glazed aged duck. Still very young. 92-94.

This is all about power and extract, and doesn't have the finesse or elegance I expect from Riesling. There's ripe peachy and citrus fruit at the core, a stony mineral base beneath but it feels rather heavy and extracted on the palate, finishing long but with a tinge of alcoholic heat, and leaves me wanting something more delicate with more acidity and precision.

Wines @ Salil's (Vernon, CT) : A tasty, ample, well-endowed wine with ripe peach, citrus and hints of flint. Seemed to be lacking a bit of refinement and electricity, but this was enjoyable, especially after a bit of decanting.

I served this in my wine course. Pleasant but subdued nose. Best part is the excellent long complex finish. Clearly dominated by the Nikolaihof smaragd kellerberg and the Donnhoff GG Hermansholle. So in relative terms not so exciting, but in absolute terms still an excellent wine.
