Grosset, Riesling Watervale, Clare Valley

Bob's cellar. Pure gold in colour. Aged lemon rind, almost candied, hits your nose, some mandarin and peaches in the background, zest and an aged oiliness. A little mineral acidity then sweet overripe lemons, soft and aged, some candied orange peel. Very nice. Acidity stays in the long lingering taste like a backbone. Day 2, less angular, stays similar, more blended. Enjoyable.

This has now taken on some colour. Profuse nose of orange and lime. Surprisingly weighty and assertive on the palate. Maybe more impressive than delicious.

Bob’s cellar. Golden yellow, green tinge. Aged lime pith and oil nose, some warm honey, green grass and herb tones. Lime oils flavours squeeze through, warm tones balance it out, bomb proof Riesling with so much time on its hands. Lovely, 18 years old and fresh as a daisy but without the serious acid of the young Aussie Riesling. Age has done wonders to this. Excellent.

SLDS September 2023 : Toasty, kerosene, lemon peel, orange peel with floral overtones. Really nice length & composure. Very good and in the zone now.

Medium gold colour in the glass. Fresh but simple aroma of lemon, white flowers and some kerosene notes. Amazingly this wine has plenty of acidity and zing. Lovely medium body of citrus and melons. Long refreshing finish.

A cellar surprise, this wine opened beautifully with a pale colour and a fragrant nose of lemon, lime, white peach and slate with a touch of toasty development. The palate is fresh and pure with finely chiselled fruit characters but a real sense of matiere and minerality that recalls Alsace. A terrific Clare Valley riesling.

This still seems very youthful - does it age? Light bright straw colour. Flinty grass + hints of petrol nose (or am I assuming that?). Palate shows a little more complexity but feel this hasn’t got years ahead rather than it’s just never going to age.

Medium gold. The ripe nose of honeyed lemon, lime and mandarin with a hint of bath salts does not prepare you for the zesty minerality and acid freshness of the palate. Long finish with a more honeyed citrus, slate and bath salts, and the barest hint of petrol. Could even be called a touch exotic. Drinking beautifully but no rush under Stelvin. Hard to imagine a better wine for smoked fish than this one. Day 2 richer and more oil, …

A very fine nose of lemon, lime and flint. There's the barest whiff of toasty development. It is elegant and cool in the mouth with lemon flavours front and centre. It has excellent cut and juiciness and is a fresh, energetic Riesling of great finesse.

{Screwcap,13%} Mid yellow. Fresh but developing nose; a good blend of lime and lemon with a custard apple note. Not simple. The palate is somewhat mature, same flavours as the nose with medium acid and an even balance along the palate. Medium weight. Much better balance and complexity than many surrounding vintages. Should go another decade easily; I don't think this is near peak yet.

The nose has some smoky mineral reduction, a whiff of toast, some petrol and lime brulee. It is rich and full and preserved lime flavours lap around the gums. It has a light creaminess and acidity is softening yet it is a wine of great energy. Ageing beautifully under screwcap and just about in the perfect place.

Drinking so well now. The trinity of smells that I love in an aged Clare riesling: orange blossom, lime and toast. Almost soft, but looking at the bright pale colour there is no shortage of acidity and the impression of sweetness (just) comes from the fruit.

Some toast and smoky mineral on the nose. Has the scent of citrus blossom and plenty of lime in the mouth. There's some riockmelon fruit and it is quite richly fruited. The finish is dry and chalky. Drinking really well right now.

Lime, slightly herbal, gunflint and floral on the nose. An intense aroma, very clean and pure. On the palate, a great pitch of nervy acidity initially, lime again, grapefruit, a slatey backbone and pithy texture. This wine has a long finish with a hint of evolution at the end - slightly honeyed and biscuity. Very good, still young with plenty of room to develop but offers rewarding drinking now.

Pulpy mouthfeel. Grapefruit and candied peel evolving into kerosene. Slatey minerality. Still an adolescent for intensity.

Annual Riesling Tasting 2014 : Pebbles, lemon, slate, a floral touch and starting to take on some toast. Very, very pure fruit that feels extremely well focused. Minerality and acidity are both present and delicious. Awesome length. A great showing for this wine.

Classic petroleum nose with citrus touches. Bright citrus fruits, lovely finish. Nice mouth feel. Lacked a certain depth but paired well with the spicy Thai fish dinner that accompanied it. Seems a lot of people are still aging this one but I'm not sure its going to get all that much better....

Colour still almost non-existent. Driven lime-fruited wine. Acidity brisk but not unpleasant. Developing slowly but this will always be about zestiness than complexity so it is unclear what increased age might reveal.

mid yellow. Quite develope nose with some petrol plus citrus and some spice. Not overly complex. Similarly on the palate this is a good watervale riesling but not great - lacks both finesse and real cut and length. Good commercial wine but a bit disappointing for a grosset

This wine is in good place now. Still lithe but showing the slightest hint or caramel. Medium weight. Acidity not obtrusive. Lacks the power and complexity of the best Grossets. Very enjoyable.

light in colour. on 1st night: intense nose, mainly petrol, but also white flowers and ripe fruit. very acid mouth, on citrus notes. 2nd day: better match between nose and mouth, both on creamy ripe fruit, but with a crisp acidic backbone.

Lovely wine with a soft and textural mouthfeel and a strong acid spine. Feels like a slightly bigger style of wine but still has the hallmarks of citrus and green apple that typifies the style. Very refreshing and will leave the other couple I have for a couple of years to see how some further evolution adds more complexity.
