About 1.5 inches / 4 cm of ullage, medium amber. Purchased in 2009 from Premier Cru. The sommeliere didn't know how to use an ah so, and almost massacred the cork, but luckily it was sturdy and survived. With bits of cork, there was no real choice but to do a filtered decant. I was sure it would be dead after all that. Couldn't be further from dead! Spun sugar and creme brulee, not a ton of sugar, moderate acidity, …

Coming off the dry Rieslings at this German masterclass noticeably very sweet of course. But good lift, mineral expression, honeyed and long on the finish.

BYOB with wines 30+ years (Sollentuna) : lovely, pure, simple Riesling, some pear flavored popsicle. Not as sweet as the previous Riesling, cool fruit, fine nose. Guessed Rheingau correctly, but was off in terms of sweetness as I guessed this to be a Kabinett.

Rheingau Gourmet Festival "Versteigerungsspitzen & Schatzkammerweine", Kloster Eberbach, early Mar 2013: brownish-yellow color; fruity; slight petrol note.

Dinner by Sebastian Lühr * with "Versteigerungsspitzen & Schatzkammerweine" (Rheingau Gourmet & Wein Festival, Kloster Eberbach) : Lovely golden colour; good depth, hint of peach, honey, minerals; on the palate off-dry with quite prominent bitters, adequate acidity; good length. Is holding on but getting on.

Tasting and dinner with old wines from Kloster Eberbach (Kloster Eberbach, Rheingau) : Deep golden colour. Nose with dried fruit, citrus, caramel, some spice and smoke, petroleum. The most developed nose of the flight. The palate is "somewhat off-dry" with dried fruit, winter apple, some caramel, medium acidity, a hint of bitterness and an aftertaste of winter apples. Exciting nose, but not too fresh on the palate. 86 p I'm sure this wine - from a top vineyard but marked …

Riesling Dinner - 50s through to the 80s : I found the nose slightly dull, there is some marzipan and earthiness but it didn't really open up over the course of the glass. I though that the palate was brighter, it had some tasty light sweetness along with decent drive, though looking at it very critically the depth isn't really there and thus it didn't really have the interest I look for, though it was perfectly decent to drink.

Weekend drinks at my place (Vernon, CT) : A lovely mature Riesling fragrance combining sweet dried fruits and honeyed notes with savoury herbal elements and orange zest, and a palate that's surprisingly dry without much remaining sweetness but still showing plenty of acidity to keep the flavours fresh and vibrant. It's lovely to drink both on its own and with the lightly spiced lamb merguez stew.

Various Wines @ Salil's (Vernon, CT) : This is why we age Riesling... so much going on, so many flavors, yet still quite alive for a a 37 year old wine. The nose offered honey, orange zest and dried tropical fruits; one would think this would be sweeter than it actually was from the nose, but the sweetness has mostly melted away, leaving behind a mostly dry, mineral bath of a wine. Sleek and racy. I might guess this would …

Long overdue short notes from Salil's (Vernon) : Deep gold. Complex nose of orange, honey, apricot. Medium body, surprisingly lighter-bodied than the nose would suggest. Medium+ acidity, slightly dominating the sweetness. Nice. Drying finish.

Yep! Finally a really good bottle of Steinberger -89. Lovely development on the nose, without any off notes. Aromas of baked yellow apples, apricots, honey, petrol, slate and fresh forest. Smooth and pleasurable taste, still retains enough fruit and acidity, not at all dried out and bitter like previous bottles. A lovely experience of mature riesling, everybody likes it a lot.

Very mature with an oily well rounded body. Old citrus being there but no spritzy fruitiness. Quite sweet and almost a dessert wine. More plums than apples in the scent. A hint of bitterness in the aftertaste. A pleasant wine that goes very well on its own. Anyhow I might had expected a little more from this wine..

An interesting matured riesling with lots of "oldness". The nose is very nuanced and shows wet forests, fudge, rubber, and of course still some sweet fruits. The forest-aroma really struck me. Unfortunately it's not that fresh anymore and resembles more a apple cider than a wine... Still a nice drink for the sofa.

We've had this a couple of times before, and it's impossible to give it a higher score. Perfumed nose with a strong coniferous forest feel to it. The maturity comes across as fudge, but also renders unclean notes of mouldy cellar and used gym shoes. Swedish crawfish cooked with dill just around the corner. Acids are getting numb, fruit's drying out, the midpalate verges on hollow, the finish is slightly bitter. Interesting, but not entirely enjoyable. Rating might be too …

This is no big thrill to drink. Nose is a bit unclean with lots of development. Taste is slightly hollow and bitter. On its way downhill.

Soaked cork. Beautiful amber color. Extremely fragrant, notes of dried fruits, honey and tea. Strong botrytis influence, but this was clean and refreshing. Mostly dry and still holding a balancing amount of acids. Somewhat short, but the complexity and fragrance made up for it.
