I was a bit disappointed with this bottle, though admittedly I’m scoring this after tasting some of the best wines in the region. The color is a very pale green-yellow at this point. The nose is pleasant enough with lively citrus fruit and a touch of ginger to keep it firmly in the genre. Initially it seems a bit dull with just the GL greatness lingering in the background. But with air it becomes enjoyable and somewhat unique with a pronounced oily texture and taste. The use of oak is obvious although we’re talking quite big barrels of 1200 liters. This was wildly recognizable even tho I didn’t know the details before hand. It has a nice astringency and volume without being particularly complex. Definitely not the best Bassermann can offer, but nice nonetheless.

Dass in der VDP.GROSSEN LAGE® KALKOFEN Kalk das vorherrschende Gestein im Boden ist, dürfte nicht überraschen. Es mischt sich in der fünf Hektar großen Lage mit Lösslehm und mergeligem Ton und tritt vereinzelt auch als Geröll auf.
