Clear medium garnet color. Christmas spices with cinnamon and tobacco on the delicious nose. Lots of tobacco and leather with a touch of Aran is and orange peel.

Barolo 2004 with the Jeroboam Club (Little Shop and Pantry, Bristol) : Garnet-red, some bricking. Attractive nose with rose petals, cherry lifesavers, balsam and pine. Clean and transparent on the palate with a liquorice core; balanced; evolved and well integrated tannins. Just lacking a bit of grip mid-palate and somewhat watery on the finish. Still, this was lovely in a lighter style than most of the others.

Decanted 2hrs. Practically no sediment. With roast duck. On point for drinking now. Long and dry, some tannins still but sweet cherry fruit throughout. Delicious.

On the palate, dry, medium dipping acidity, medium+ alcohol, integrated tannins, medium+ body. Pretty light ruby color and an expressive floral bouquet. Red berries, slightly tart, some nice mineral and delicate rose flavors, elegant and vibrant, with some underlying strength. Excellent now, but has some more time ahead of it.

Heavy dust on the bottle usually foretells an exciting vinous adventure ahead, and this one came through. Showing age and maturity, but plenty of life as well, this wine was both delicious and an interesting experiment. Diverse components of spice (black pepper, vanilla), earth (iron, tar), and fruit (cherry, raspberry) along with a quite floral nose. Opened up over time at dinner.

Nature Barolo absolutely perfect with dark smells (tobacco , leather, fried (but vibrant ) fruits. On the palate licorice is dominant, but so many nice nuances. Heavy on tannins - but in all the right ways. Opens nicely after an hour but continues to improve for hours. I drank it at 14-18 degC.

6 years since I last tried the 2004. It has put on some weight and gained gravitas since. The nose is very fragrant with red fruit and a distinct notes of rose and tar. Decanted for a few hours. What a beautiful wine right in the middle of its drinking window. A screaming nose of roses and tar with great legs that drip down the side of the glass. Still very dark with no signs of bricking. Perfect balance of fruit acid and tannins (FAT). Paired very well with filet on the grill. Tonight singing. Sorry that it’s my last bottle but gives me great view of the 2004 vintage.

Needed time to open - not a surprise. Very deep color for a traditional Nebbiolo aged in Botti - still entirely primary, with dense berry fruit, smoke, assertive tannin, hints of what's still to come. Will rate higher in 10 years. Hold.

White burgundy & Barolo/Barberesco (La Trompette, London) : Darker, slightly cloudy. A dull, dense garnet. Beefy nose with a touch of tea. Smooth and mellow on the attack with a nicely spicey, bitters-like finish. ****

Colour muted to brick red at the edge of the glass- nose has an alcoholic edge of Armagnac or Grappa mixed with still floral notes. Tannic structure dominates with a prune, dried fruit middle and tobacco and leather also key notes. Long complex finish. Complex, elegant yet punchy- not the very greatest Barolo but aging well. Might leave a few more years if you're holding any of these.

Like a fugue by a good--not great--composer. The counterpoint and harmony are immaculate, but the melodic hook and climactic chorale are elusive. Dried and fresh strawberries, cedar, black pepper, and spice. Medium bodied with drying, yet integrated tannin, iron-inflected minerality, and an austere disposition. Varietally accurate, yet doesn't quite 'pop' aromatically or on the palate. Hold next for 3-7 years to see if tertiary complexity develops--if so this will be a special wine.

Out of the bottle, beautiful perfume of rich fruit. Initially on the palate, alcohol predominates, detracting from overall enjoyment. After 8 hours in the carafe, things settle down and more tertiary elements of earth and herbal tones emerge. Well resolved tannins. Seems to be in a nice drinking window at the moment.

Megan's 30th (Chicago, IL) : I think we managed to catch this wine at a very awkward stage of aeration, where the tannins had clamped down hard and there wasn't much on display. This does seem to see a little bit of barrique, and the tannins aren't exactly the most pleasant. Unfortunately, there just wasn't much on display -- perhaps this may have showed much better with even more air, or as a pop and pour.

Still looked young with barely any bricking at all! Tar and petrol on the nose and some cherries left on the palate although fruit was almost completely gone here. Floral elegant and well integrated. Decanted for 30 minutes

Drank this at the end of a dinner. The wine seemed in a good spot - still quite fresh and juicy but with developed notes also. I would say it has many years Ahead. Not outstanding in any way, but rather pleasant - not least after a long dinner with nothing but burgs.

Light brick in color. Long legs. Nose is medium of cassis and flowers. Light on the palate, with decent acidity. Some fruit still there, plum and cherry. But mostly forest and a little menthol (balsam). Finish is short but pleasant. At the end of the day a pleasant wine but unmemorable.

Pours with a bit of brick around the edges. Aromas are rustic with dried red fruit. Light to medium body with moderate tannin and high acidity. I decanted this for 24 hours ladies and gents. It's drinking good now but still a bit out of whack. A good diversity of flavor nuances bring some joy but the overall bottom line is "average" at best. Earth, cranberry, and a bit of velvet.

A good value for a Barolo so old (I paid $35). Dominant (but undiscernable) fruit, mild tannins, no secondary flavors or complexity after all these yrs (suprisingly for a 12-yr old bottle). Went well with the Risotto, Bolognese and Duck.
