Ata Rangi, Pinot Noir, Martinborough

This had a complex and balanced nose, with sauvage notes, slight chocolate and some stem lift. The palate was also balanced, with ripe fruit, good acidity and mostly integrated tannins. This was excellent and there should be plenty of life left in well stored bottles of this wine.

This wine benefitted from decanting due to sediment. The nose was slightly earthy, with some oak influence. There is lively acidity with slight chocolate notes. Enjoyable and I expect it will decline gradually with further age.

Still very good; no sense of being past it; nice fruit and nose; solid finish; good Burgundy level.

French in style, still drinking well after 20 years.

Has some funk and barnyard on it, so past peak drinking, but still a pleasure. Bright red fruit and acidity burning through the musk. Some faded wet wood, no alcohol burn per other comments, and a gentle long finish.

Superb. Still quite dark despite some sediment. Improved after about an hour of being opened. Plenty of tertiary characters but also still some fruit.

This has definitely slimmed up, developed a touch of tertiary character, and shed a lot of its oak, so in those respects it's better than it was a few years ago. If it's showing wood at all, it's more through a resiny pine kind of way than the generic cedar/mocha I caught last time. A lovely example of an aged New Zealand Pinot. Very fruit driven- raspberries on the nose but still with good tannins and balance. Drink now as at it's peak.

After my first experience with this wine, I was apprehensive about opening this bottle. Initially, the nose was earthy and mushroomy with beautiful red fruit. The pure raspberry and cranberry create an electric current on the palate with spicy overtones and an earthy midpalate. The acidity is lively and amplifies the purity and zip of this wine. From my favorite New Zealand producer, but I've never had one with this much bottle age before and I have to admit it doesn't give me a whole lot of confidence in the wine's ability to evolve, since it tastes like a wine released yesterday. A little tight when first opened but in a half and hour this wine just opened up. Still has some soft tannins left but this wine has a ton of fruit. Maybe a little bit too much alcohol.

Hated this. Giving up on new world pinot. Drink immediately or not at all - of all the NZ pinots I bought from the 2000 and 2001 vintages, only the Dry River has held up. This, and Felton Road were especially disappointing. All going in the Boeuf Bouguignon.

Ruby red. Nose was restrained with raspberry aroma. Palate was medium bodied and fruity. Nice with meal.

Aromas of fresh strawberry and freshly cut roses. Flavors of the same strawberry along with raspberry. These flavors were really intense with a long finish. I'd have liked to see more spice, but hope that may evolve with some time as the wine improves.
