Unbelievable after all of these years it was near perfect

1978 vintage

The first vintage of the Reserva label. Mostly Tempranillo and Monastrell (no Cabernet in this vintage). This was drinking beautifully. Very Bordeaux like is style and weight. A warm leathery nose with blackcurrants and mint. Fresh acidity and still very good fruit on the palate. Developed well over 2 hours. Not profound but very pleasing !

1959 vintage

Lots of menthol notes right after opening, but blew off after around 45 minutes into a beautiful wine. Still drinking well!

1981 vintage

Fully mature nose displaying subtle sweet red fruit, dry cherry, plum, cedar, leather, soy, sous bois, ash and earth. Fully integrated palate, subtle sweet red fruit, silky and fluid, good acidity, earthy mineral, and a medium to long sweet red fruit driven finish with cedar and earth at the end. This particular bottle is a bit more advanced than the previous bottles.

1981 vintage

High fill, good color. Popped and poured and the wine was still vibrant and fresh. Flavors were a tad muted but easily held on for the hour+ it took to finish the bottle. none of the tobacco, shoe leather etc you might get with a 45 plus year old Bordeaux. Delightful with aging still possible.

Right out of the gates this was a gracefully aged Rioja with lots of vivacity and power. At first only 92-ish pts as it did not show that clean and precise but the longer it sit in the glass the better it got. Significantly declining now, showing a little oxidation and quite a bit of brown. However, it does bring lovely spice and fruitcake aromas to the table, and a beautiful silk mouthfeel. Still an enjoyable bottle and not a drop was wasted, but if you have any of this hanging around, it is definitely time to drink up.

1/1, soaked, crumbly cork. Medium mahogany core, wide pale mahogany rim. The nose takes a while to settle - initially honey/VA and musty notes but then, going back to it an hour later it has transformed and shows antique furniture, vanilla, mint, flashes of red and black berry fruit. Medium bodied, fully resolved, lightly minty red and black fruits, vanilla, very spicy, soft tannins, medium/good length finish. Still very much alive

Beautiful fully mature nose displaying sweet slightly dry red fruit, cherry jelly, dry cherry, a hint of cedar, vanilla and caramel/American oak, leather, sous bois, charred rare steak and earth. Fully integrated palate, nicely layers sweet cherry fruit, rich, fluid and silky, bright acidy, earthy mineral and a long sweet cherry fruit driven finish with caramel and cedar at the end. Blanquitto’s TN from 2014 is spot on. Not knowing the grape varietal, I assume it is a mature Rioja reserva. The initial note is vanilla and cedar, American oak. Tasted blind. The nose is redolent of plum, dark chocolate, and blueberry ice cream. Blue fruit in the mouth, tannins are almost gone but the fruit is still playful. Tasty sweetness from maturity on the finish. Drink up.

This started off with a dry, dusty nose, and seemed distinctly tired and just holding on to life. But over the next hour or so it made an amazing transformation, shedding the dusty earthy nose and putting on some serious weight. The aroma went through a cedar phase first, then a little while later was eucalyptus, and later still it became vanilla. Lovely fruit, very mature but still quite vibrant, and a strong finish. Great juice.

Cork broke in half. Top came out; bottom crumbled. Double decanted to remove cork bits. Color - dark red to thick heavy brown edges. Nose of ripe dark fruits and a hint of heavy floral. Taste of medium dark fruits and touch of earth. On the start, had a distinctive sherry taste, then moved to port on the finish. Flavors held until finished, over an hour plus.

Dark brick red colour typical of 10yr old Cabernet. Aromas of dark fruits, mocha and dark spice. Very pleasant medium-plus weight palate of blackcurrants, dark cherries, very dark chocolate, a touch of slate and mineral but a nice sweetness of ripe fruit with very good acidity. Basically minimal expectations for this cellar one-off were met with a nicely mature, or slightly past mature wine. No formal notes, but the color is still good, with only a little bricking, and the balance of fruit and acid is nice. Tannins were mostly gone, but enough remained to make this a pleasing wine. Though it ought to be drunk relatively soon.

Oldies but goodies : Dark, hardly transparent colour. Full, satureate nose of PX sherry, chocolate and baked ham. This bottle was one dimensional and over the hill.

Served double-blind. We quickly hone-in on an old-school Spanish wine. For me, the dilly-vanilla American oak signature is an Iberian smoking gun, but the wood is integrated and is not overbearing. We guess something from the mid-1980's, someone says Spanish Cabernet like from Miguel Torres, and I just throw out that it could be a 1981 Gran Coronas Gran Reserva. Bulls eye! Good fill. Dusty, richly fruited berry and herb nose with barely any hint of oxidation. Very nice aromatics. Big, bright, fresh palate. Silky sweet cherry fruit with tangy acidity combine to make a jubilant and succulent old wine. Gorgeous!

Sings of age. Aromas are very "Riojaish" with by the barrel ageing. On the palate smooth and soft, medium acidity.
