Nikolaihof, Vinothek Riesling, Wachau

Wonderful nose that feels super youthful with stone fruit, lemon, flowers, and a hint of honey. Great acidity on the palate with a good amount of power, yet lifted notes of lemon, minerals, and other citrus fruit that counter some bee's wax and peach flavors. Long finish. Outstanding Riesling and quite the experience!

2002 vintage

Tasted blind with my wine buddy. Guessed a northern Pflaz 2020 riesling ! No evolution in the hue, herbal and green synesthesic nose. There's some body but without the plushiness of alsatians, westhofener or foster rieslings. No orange fruit to send one to the Rheingau and too broad for Nahe/Moselle. Under the palate, it is complete wine with a lot of harmony and inner peace, comforting and nice while fruit might be to vaporous. Impressive youthfulness in that wine !

Really complex, with black tea, parafilm and fruit skin notes and lots of savory nuttiness, which dominated the minerality I expected to find on the palate. The long elevage has made this wine full-bodied and viscous, with a very waxy, Glycerin mouthfeel. Frankly, I prefer my rieslings sharper, fresher and more immediate, but this will impress lovers of textured, powerfully-bodied wines.

Petrol fumes, wet stone, and a slap of sea spray — this bottle came in hot with minerality and a med-plus weight that clung like silk on limestone. A damn fine ride, no doubt. But from an '02 Vinothek? I was expecting deeper magic. It flirted with greatness, then ghosted just before the drop. Still, a hell of a glass — just not the revelation I wanted.

Vinothek, an old release series from an oldest winery in Austria, meant for a long haul. This vintage has aged on its lees for 16 years in old and large oak casks. Medium+ intensity honeyed aroma yellow plums, spices, stones, white tea, white peaches, herbal and flinty hints. Medium body, much more pronounced and deeper than 2008 with silky elegant texture, creamy edges, stony and flinty minerality with pleasantly bitterish grapefruit peel notes, refreshing medium+ acidity.

Very good! Grapefruit and other citrus fruits, a bit creamy. Drinks great. Did not decant and think might have been even better with decanting. Medium to full bodied, long finish

Unbelievably fresh and youthful for a 22 year old wine. There are bright notes of grapefruit and citrus, but also some mildly cheesy notes, floral aromatics, and just a kiss of petrol. The wine is very well balanced, with plenty of acidity but also a soft, rounded mouthfeel. 12.5% alcohol. Nothing in excess. Nikolaihof recommends decanting, which definitely benefitted the wine. Unique and highly recommended!

Consumed in 2024. Aged for 16 years in large-format neutral oak. Pours amber in color, suggesting a good amount of oxidation, which proved to be true. An excellent example of a bone-dry aged riesling.

H's old friends deput blind tasting (Antichi Sapori) : This wine really needed a decant. It was still obviously Riesling, but not your normal Riesling. It was very full, tense, almost coiled at first. Very long, slightly smoky (but not from wood, more flint) finish of pithy citrus, towards grapefruit. Very nice what Nikolaihof can do with these very long aged wines...but they're not cheap either.

16 years in cask, bottled in 2018. Smoky grapefruit rind, rich and full bodied with lots of spice, bean pod, and ginger. Sweet ripe white orchard fruit that is perfectly balanced by tingling acidity and stony minerality. Worth seeking again

November 2023 Riesling Tasting (K&L) : This was a lot lighter on its feet than the intensely large-scaled and cask-influenced '97 Fass Severin Vinothek I had a couple of months earlier. This has some petrol and floral elements on the nose with a slick, glycerin texture on the palate. I'm not getting any pronounced oxidative notes.

Nikolaihof tasting (Oinoscent) : The wine shows fully developed profile, ripe to overripe notes, stone fruit, lime, sugar coated fruit, needs time to open up, earthy and nutty Palate shows the same profile but its flat and seems to lack depth, maybe an off bottle ?

From magnum. Beautiful nose of stone fruit, citrus, and saline notes. It was slightly reductive at first, even after all these years in barrel… Great acidity on the palate with lemon zest, lime, and tart apricot. Long finish. Really well balanced and interesting, what a great wine!

Waxy citrus, minerals, tart peach, and lime on the nose. Nice acidity with lemon zest, brine, more lime, and great complexity and nuance on the palate. Long finish. A lovely wine, delicate and fresh it tastes like a much younger Riesling. Excellent!

Minerals, stone fruit, a hint of citrus, flowers, and elderflower all melded together on the nose. Lovely acidity with tart peach, lemon, green pear, and more minerals on the palate. Long finish. No discernible oxidative notes from the long elevage. Very unique and absolutely delicious. I loved it!

The current release of this bottling. One of the few Rieslings I drink along with Keller, Clos Ste. Hune and Egon. Always superb and a great sushi wine 😍. Long decant...

Chinese spices. This spent 16 years ageing in old oak barrels. The primary fruits have begun their slumber. There is some volatile acidity that lives in this wine and hits you on the finish.
