Faiveley Cellar Visit, Tasting, and Old Wine Lunch (Nuits St.-Georges) : In vertical. Black fruits but still too firm. There is clearly enough to enjoy, but this is unlikely to realize the potential so many 1988s have found later in life.

Magical mature Burgundy aromas of smoky dried black cherry, potpourri, mulch, steeped dried porcini and spice. Good concentration of mature, plump fruit with seamlessly integrated satiny tannin. Magical nose comes back for an encore in the finish. Bravo.

Full garnet. Quite a meaty nose with a slightly stewed prune note suggesting a ripe vintage. Full, really quite dense and meaty. Not subtle but pretty much fully resolved, proper grand cru weight and density, just a little dryness on the finish but just right with the goose and trimmings. Tightens a little with air to take on an iron element on the mid palate. Reasonably bright on the finish. ****

Considering my last few ounces as I write. Wow. This is really great wine! My concern that it might be too old were completely unfounded. Each pour has built on the last, each pour better. Black cherry (remarkably fresh), iron, and an autumnal walk in the woods. Length and depth, spot on acidity. This is the kind of Burgundy that will make you an addict.

Charleston Offlineorama V; 11/7/2019-11/10/2019 (The Holy City) : I am generally not a big fan of this wine, but this one showed pretty well. Rustic, somewhat monolithic but still quite tasty, with a pleasant bitterness on the finish.

Charleston V - the wooden anniversary; 11/6/2019-11/10/2019 (Charleston, SC (various locations)) : This was a funny one in the line-up, but I liked it. Much more green and a bit of barnyard and herbal notes and all of that. This evolved some through the night and I found the difference in it a bit refreshing.

Medium ruby. Nose of stone, mulberry, bramble, licorice, hyacinth. Took 90 minutes to give much, but eventually exhibited granite-like layers of stony, austere mulberry and red raspberry fruit cut with iron and briar on the palate. Firm tannin and moderate acidity ranging into a longer finish of brooding red fruit poised over immovable rock. El Cap with fruit.

The wine looks ruby colored. It smells like red currant, strawberry, cranberry and mushroom.

From magnum, this was in really good form. It has pure, sweet cherry fruit at its core. There's plenty of earth and iron and a hint of meat. It is full, rich and chewy with excellent depth and length.

Nicely mature, with good acidity and a quite smooth mouthfeel, although a slightly grainy and drying tannins makes for a rather rustic finish. Complex with meaty morello fruit, earth, iron, mushroom and a bit of sous bois. Showing a tiny bit of oxidation on day two, but still delivers much of what I look for in a twenty year old burg.

Looking fresh still, especially for a '97. Not decanted but cork removed for 2hrs. Muted nose initially that slowly gives up some wafting berry aromas with time in the glass. Initial soft fruit palate gives way to relatively tensioned and muscular wine. Very long and enjoyable finish.

Joel's Birthday Party (The Palace, Mission, SF) : Intense funky nose with meaty, red fruit, very nice nose; palate is light bodied, excellent acidity, austere, low fruit; finish is short-medium. The palate is a little difficult and austere. 91. Can't tell if it needs time, but mostly enjoyable now.

Great colour - bright ruby with only a faint sign of bricking. This is a very cerebral wine offering a complex nose of small red fruits, iron, floral elements, meaty/earthiness, liquorice, a hint of ripe banana skin and a subtle touch of oak; an awesome bouquet. Nice presence on the palate which has fresh acids, excellent concentration and a long tight finish containing a good lick of tannin. You get the feeling there is more here waiting to come out. …

Drank at our 1988 grand cru tasting this week. slight hints of herbs and french brie on the nose, more ashy and sweat sox like but not flawed just reticent to open up, lovely and sweet black cherry fruit on the palate, rich, tasty, great mouthfeel, the taste was the same for about 90 minutes, then showed its age, medium finish. 3 to 5 years more but at its peak, tannins resolved, suggest you drink up.

Faiveley Dinner at Marea 11/10/2011 (Marea) : Bricking ruby. Nose is pure '88: strict, sour cherry, horse sweat, interesting. Brambles. Palate surprisingly soft, but also tannic and masculine (paradoxically, though this being Burgundy, all things are possible…). Medium length. Later on, nose full of herbaceousness. Weightless palate. Nose now evolving to lacquer. Angular palate and finish. B+, but really striving for that A-.

Distinctive nose of peanut chews. Rustic. Very chewy on palate - spiced fruit, soft tannins. Secondary elements - earthy, maybe slightly underripe. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20.

Decanted 2 hours. Brilliant medium light color with a clear rim. The pedigree is immediately apparent on the nose with complex and impeccably well integrated aromas of earthy red spices, savory herbs and incense. The first flavor impression is sweet and soft then the acidity kicks in to lift the tart red cherry, rose hip and darker fruit flavors. In my experience with the vintage, this wine is a real stand out. Open for business now with room for further …

Wine-Pages Faiveley Offline (The Square, London) : Full garnet. Slightly curious, lactic nose. Swampy cabbage nose. Metallic, cabbage palate. I really hope this is faulty. No. With the veal this improves immeasureably **? Still not convinced. No, gone again once the plates hhave been cleared. Not pleasant and hopefully not representative. I note others round the table liked this.

Kitchen Tasting Group Does Beaver Creek – Day Two : Much better than the Belland. Has an expressive nose of red fruit and mineral. The taste is big and concentrated with plenty of complex flavors. Good acidity. Good length. This really helped the group get on track and prepared for the next flight.

Quite deep blood red, only slightly paler rim, but with a touch of orange. Robust yet fine nose with cherries, baked earth and a touch of oak spice. Mouth entry is quite big and sweet with powerful plummy fruit and oaky spice. This fills out even more to an impressively full and earthy mid-palate, before tapering off to a long and spicy, earthy finish. Really dry and a touch green, this needs more time still. After 24 hours, the wine …

Medium blood red, tinged with mahogany. Good depth of colour right to the rim, which is showing brick/orange. Nose is all typical Corton burnt earth and spice at first, but lovely kirsch and gamey meat aromas emerge. Palate is remarkably smooth and full, perfectly balanced, with gamebird flavours hovering over a richly earthy red cherry fruit. The finish is long and spicy with sweet red fruit. A very classy, fully mature, wine.

Stunning cherry-red color with slight tinge of yellow. A bouquet of earth, nutmeg, cherry, and twig dances on the nose. A similar medley of flavor shines through in the mouth, with additional hints of cinnamon and wild game, with a satisfying finish. Balanced and elegant.

Well I couldn't keep my hands off this and now I have no more. But it provided a lot of pleasure and was one of the top '97 red Burgs I've had. If you own some, it will keep for 5 more years quite easily. Nose is perhaps the best part of the wine. A nose that could be mistaken for an even nobler Grand Cru (what else to expect from M. Burgundy Night (An excellent Vancouver restaurant) : Gorgeous vibrant red color. Nose that was like a mini version of the '91 DRC Echezeaux sampled with it. Early in the night, forbiddingly tight. Later opened to show nice complexity. Powerful, fresh big black fruit. Closes down tight on the finish, but this is one '97 with quite a future.
