Quick notes, part of a 30 year Meyney vertical I did (1988/2003/2018) - Decanted for an hour, just in a wonderful place. Lovely nose, great balance, in my ideal window for the region, even with the lesser vintage.

Needs some air after opening. Then a nice, developed Meyney. I think it will not improve further with more aging, so suggest to drink it within the next few years.

This had a really interesting nose, and seemed to be quite developed. Lots of secondary / tertiary notes, plenty of prune. After some air, though, it seemed that the wine was a little cooked (too long under the stairs, perhaps). 88-90

Evolution beginning to show on the nose with truffle notes. Integrated dark fruit flavours weave in and out with impressive density and long inky finish. Tasted at the chateau.

Picked up at majestic on the assumption that maybe when a painful bruiser in its youth meets a weak vintage, this can create a decent wine. In truth, a lot of these Cellartracker reviews aren’t too wide of the mark - yes, it is bitter, a little sour and the tannin is swamping the fruit. But, with a hearty steak, this can be redeemed and offers something one might generously called ‘traditional’. It’s not heavy, there is some powerful structure …

A bottle from a long carried case that has scored well. This one lacked freshness and seemed a bit oxidized. Leaving this note as a marker for the next one. People seemed to enjoy it and so I just shut up and drank...

Unable to understand Parker's 89 score. This wine is simply dreadful and should never have been bottled. Acidic mouthwash without fruit, flavour or any of the St Estephe signature notes. I am not joking when I say I would think twice before using it for cooking. I heard that 2013 was a troublesome vintage for Meyney. I didn't realise they'd produced a wine that tastes like it cost £2.99 at LIDL.

This is deep garnet, some signs of maturity at the rim. The nose is big but not subtle, some blackcurrant and mulberry with hints of flowers and tobacco. This is still solid in the mouth framed by tannin and acidity, there are some fruit and aromatics, but in the background. No over ripeness, such a relief, but if it holds together it would be better in perhaps 5 years. Maybe 92 or ****1/2.

Stern. Took an hour to open up. Still fairly primary but pure with nice black fruit. Fantastic with a steak. Still too early likely but enjoyable nonetheless.

5 months ago I had 2005 vintage and unfortunately this wine it's not up to that, it doesn't mean it's bad one. First of all - structure is like one dimension, everything is on dark side of (wine) moon 🎼🎶🎵🎶🎶 Second - wine is too sweet. Why? Ripe dark moon, ooops dark fruits. And the third reason - short finish with too soft spice. Give me some red fruits, minerals or whatever to counterbalance sweetness and I would give this …

Hard as nails...This case has been a weight on my shoulders since release, sitting in the way of many other wines that I want to drink, and cant get to because im an idiot that keeps thinking I should buy more of what I taste....This is the best bottle I have had and it has finally touched the edges of stage one maturity. Its a Meyney, so I should know better. Rather light footed and graphite driven with pencil shavings …

68 degrees, no decant; inky, black-purple; feint nose of barn and berries; bold attack, massive fruit and ballsy tannins giving a long finish; loads of black cherries, mint; a bit too hot and sticky (might be getting maderized in my cellar); 17.5

A little stiff and joyless, though well made and pleasant enough. Dark, unevolved appearance. Cedar, cigar box, dark chocolate, dusty plum nose. Grippy and fresh palate, with notes of dark fruit, espresso, and bitter chocolate. Not sure what the future holds for this one but I’ll hold my remaining bottles for at least a few more years.

Blind. The oldest Bordeaux I've tasted. The color is a burnt umber, moving towards orange at the rim, and the wine is almost opaque with sediment (?) I think. On the nose, I get dried cherry and a leafiness that is reminscent of Rioja. There's also some ripe and overrripe fruit, especially prunes, along with orange peel and amaro. The aromatics remain nicely lifted though and not cooked. On the palate, the tannin is still quite tuggy, though it's pleasant. …

Detected more heat on this bottle. But otherwise still a fine wine with notes consistent with my prior review. This is dark and concentrated, a bit lacking on the aromas but firm palette with good structure. Not sure how it evolves from here. Might be at its prime.

Still very deep dark color. There is some nice development here of secondary and even tertiary flavors. Some dark red fruit, newish leather, some earth notes. But yes a little hot from the high alcohol. Quite pleasant and definitely old world, but the alcohol detracts a bit. Tannins are very fine.

Purchased in 2015 for €34. For approaching 14, this is very dark, showing some maturity on the rim. The nose is all richness, maybe chestnuts, dark fruit a bit of earth and some heat. Richness and extracted in the mouth, but little detail or excitement. Enjoyable, but clumsy showing its 14.5% alcohol. 91 reflecting what others may think***1/2, not bothered that I only have one more.

From an Imperial bottle. A fragrant bouquet of leather, toasted spices, ripe blackberries and hints of dried oregano. Palate is firm and fresh. A touch more plums on the mid-palate. Medium-bodied. Structure is still tight. Finish is clean but with rough tannins.

Last bottle of 2010. This is really evolved. Tertiary - gravel, tobacco, lead, mushrooms. Great qpr for St Estephe! Still dark purple but not sure this will improve as structure is breaking down. Loved it!

Sadly this bottle was very tired, despite a pristine fill and cork. Nose held promise - sultry black fruit, cool wet clay, and a hint of vanilla. Palate is tired, showing thin, attenuated fruit - just a bit of blackberry jam, and astringent woody tannins.

Allowed to breathe in glass 2 hours. Clear deep dark garnet color. Lovely bouquet of black currant paste, creme de cassis, fennel, coffee, unsweetened chocolate, vanilla, cardamom, bay leaf, sage, forest floor, pencil shavings, hints of earthy mushrooms and roasted nuts. Similar on the palate, full body, seamless, balanced, lingering finish. Improved with air. Lovely middle aged claret.

Great place now. Real depth and complexity which is why Meyney, when left for a couple of decades becomes such a great value purchase. Perhaps not the greatest and one recent bottle was "flat" but nevertheless a real treat

Very deep colour with hardly some browning at the rim. Expansive bouquet with cherries, caramel, chocolate and some funk for extra complexity. Much weight on the palate wifh brown sugar, chocolate, masses of ripe tannines and acid for freshness. Can certainly be kept for another 10 years but is very tasty right now. Excellent quality for the money.

Left Bank Bordeaux and some Aussies : Deep blackcurrant nose with a touch of oak. Very earthy, stony and shot through with minerals, for midbodied tannins. The wine is approachable now (especially if you are a tannin lover), but the wine is structured for further development. Promising. (W)

I might be selling the numerical rating a little short. Over the years I have had good luck with moderate priced Red Bordeaux beginning to outperform their price point after a long period of cellaring. This wine is one of those. It is a classic Saint-Estephe. I have 2023 down as the last year of the drink window, but detected no taste notes to suggest it is fading.

Another gnarly bottle of meyney after 12 years and for that matter, this could be believably 4 to 5 years old. It has a firm streak of acidity running through it that gives it freshness, lift, and turtle paced development. Lots of tannins , very dark, very promising and highly underdeveloped. Needs 5 years. Same as with a bottle consumed about a year ago. Decanted for one and a half hours. Classic Saint-Estephe. However, this bottle might have been a little off from the last bottle. I have had these bottles in the drink now rack in my Wine Room. I believe that is the correct strategy.

A nice claret with a strong StE spine of tannin that is well absorbed by the ample dark fruits. There is a fair amount of acidity and the oak was a bit more than I would have liked. In short, it’s not as nice as the 2009 vintage, but it is still a good claret, and it is in its drinking window, where it should remain for at least 5 years…probably 10 years.
