Domaine Jean Royer, Petit Roy, VdF

The last of my 3-bottle auction lot and finally a drinkable one. However, I did not find this very interesting. Some black pepper on the nose. On the palate, one is immediately met with a mouthful of sweet fruit, kind of nondescript and not very Rhone-like. Little structure or acidity to accompany the generous fruit, either. Again, really fantastic. Really rings all of the bells of a great Southern Rhone wine. For my money so much better, complex, interesting than the big brother Royer CDP. Yes, it might lack intensity but it makes up for it in every other way. Drinking beautifully right now.

Quite nice, well integrated, moderately rich red & blue fruit, dark red fruit, plum, earth, herb. Less dense than expected, enjoyable. Moderate length. Late in meal following various other wines but seemed to wake folks up with enjoyment, so that is notable.

Wow, an extra year has done wonders for this beauty. Really pure, clear, transparent Grenache. Crunchy and loaded with peppery intensity. Slightly drying tannins amidst the sweet, gentle, strawberry and pine laden palate.

Similar to last notes a year ago. A tad bit more mellowed tannins. Should be good for at least 2, probably 4 more years.

Great balance after several hours open. Black and red berries and white pepper on the palate.

Even though this was noticeably corked it only affected the nose. The palate was still rich and peppery. Big bummer that it had the dampness from some cork defect.

nose - stewed cherry, prune, some raisin, tar. palate - balsamic, prune juice, cooked cherry sauce. short finish, very dry and still tannic. felt a bit hollow on the back end through the finish.

Beautiful! Absolutely vibrant and fresh. Pretty fruit evoking the most feminine side of the grenache followed by the darker, weightier flavors. White pepper throughout. A big hit at dinner.

Very good; perfect balance of fruit and savory character. Plenty of dark red fruit with pepper, leather and sweet acid.

Good QPR if you give it serious air. Roses, cherries and flowers on the nose. The nose is also a bit astringent. Dark fruit on the palate with lots of alcohol. Good but not great. Definitely let it open for hours.

Spicy on the first night, but really opened up by leaving it with just a cork in it for a day. I enjoyed this one more than the last, for sure!

Ruby red. I'm told this has some 2012 juice in it as well and that it's made of the CdP leftovers from the winery. Nose: subdued aromatics. Main scents are cherries, cranberries, herbs de Provence, smoke, and tobacco leafs. Some nice minerality, too. Palate: smooth and ripe. Bit of graininess. Bright acidity. Pnp through Nuance Wine finer. Dark red color. Red fruit, a little spice and pepper on the nose. Spicyness and pepper on the palate, with some tartness. Thin mouthfeel, with moderate tannins. Nothing spectacular about this wine, but fine for a midweek wine. 88pts. Aloha!

PnP. Medium red in the glass. Expressive nose of dark red fruit, brambly fruit, mint, baking spices, wildness. Medium bodied, rustic, medium ripe fruit. Offputting finish is slightly bitter, hot, slightly tannic, unrefined. Simple table wine. Not great, not bad. Just meh.

Much better than the first bottle. Little meat, pepper, and rich dark fruit.

Popped and poured. Tastes grenache-dominant with white pepper, raspberry, and garrigue notes. Excellent balance. Great concentration of flavor, and texture reminiscent of good Chateauneuf du Pape. I think there's a lot of mid-term aging potential but this is so delicious and inexpensive that it's difficult not to drink right now.

Good QPR, more complex then expected.

Much better than the last edition of this wine that I tried (the 2007, which was ridiculously hot, the alcohol didn't fit the frame at all). Great nose, pure and powerful kirsch flavors on the palate, good finish. But still too much heat for me, too close too cloying. Well made for what it is but even in a cooler vintage it's not the wine for me.

Great Rhone nose with relaxed fruit, nothing over the top. 2008 is a less heralded vintage but I think I like from Rhone wines from cooler vintages and not hot and sticky ones. In my mind, the way Rhone should be, a little warmth, nice berry fruit, herbs and restrained.
