Francois Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux

Not as complex and concentrated as the 01 and 02 recently, but nicely focused and balanced, and I can’t see any reason to rush finishing of the last couple of bottles of this vintage

Raveneau is the gold standard when it comes to Chablis, and deservedly so. In a very average vintage a Premier Cru after nearly 20 years still delivers. It is still very seductive with decent balance and precision. The salinity is very pronounced on the finish, and is distracting. It is probably time to be finishing these off.

Medium yellow/light-gold color. Aromas have some floral/sweet lemon-lime and a hint of butterscotch. Palate still surprisingly fresh and showing good weight and density for the cru/vintage. Good example of Raveneau's ability to transcend vintage and maintain high quality and longevity. Drink.

Tasted blind. White flowers, melon, very silky but oaky finish. Was somewhat unbalanced in terms of concentration vs. oak, and lean.

PNP. Drank during a 3 hour dinner at Asa. The wine got better with air. Honeyed lemon, sea brine and spice on the nose. The palate is medium texture with a saline like viscousity, rich, concentrated fruit coupled with beguiling complexity and a core of acid that pops up on the finish.

Pnp. Gold yellow colour. Matured raveneau performed very well. Typical petrol, mineral, tropical fruits on nose. The petrol aroma is very strong, the nose improved after 2 hours. The palate was excellent from the beginning to the end. 94 palate 93+ nose

Perfect level and cork. Lemon coloured, lustrous. Citrus zest and waxy fragrance. Bright citrus, lemon and limes, quite tart, plenty of acidity. Vigorous and youthful. Not much development, little curd or cottage cheese, more linear fruit and mineral spice. This will keep a lot longer.

Delicious. Classic Raveneau. Decanted for 1 hour. In hindsight there was no rush to open and should have remained in the cellar!

Blind from the nose I thought about Raveneau but I missed the razorsharp acidity. As I was told the winery the vintage should be 03 or 06. Creamy, a bit popcorn and nuts, lemon zest, nicely balanced. For me at his peak.93-94

Wonderful generous Chablis - drinking very well, but probably no rush either if you still have a few bottles. Opulent and luxurious in style.

This had a touch of oak/hint of vanilla at first whiff, softer entry (compared to the 1st 1er cru), slightly round, easy and silky on the palate, but then lots of chalky minerality in the back, plenty of dry extract, very elegant, long, lovely. Drank during lunch with oysters from Zeeland. Delicious wine which had been in caraf for some hours before drinking it. Even still it was a baby with a long life ahead of it!

A private lunch (Restaurant De Librije ***, Zwolle, Netherlands) : Medium intense straw yellow, lively green tinge; open and mature nose, good depth, green herbs, citrus and spicy minerals and a buttery note; the palate is juicy and rounded, with ripe but fresh acidity and the tell-tale seamless and silky texture, good flavour intensity, subtle bitters; very good resonance, occasional whiff of straw, very good length.

This has exotic fruit, very ripe from the first nose with a drop og pear. Rich fruit follows on the palate but chalk and iodine adding some counterweight. One might think Limestone and minerals. This is still extremenly firm and one might think this has a decade more in it.

Greatest white Burgundy - Wine tasting dinner (Rest. FB (kg arr.)) : Every time I taste Butteaux I feel it's the best price/value choice in Raveneau's portfolio. Among others tasted against his top wine "Les Clos" Grand cru also 2006, which I gave a score of 94+. Pretty close score but a lot more expensive

New Year's Day Pork Shoulder and Grits Supper (San Francisco) : Medium yellow. Lovely nose of flowers and orchard fruit. Medium weight, chalky base, fine rendering of Chablis saline quality, and excellent acidity for the year. The additional aging from 2012 through the present has really helped bring this wine into focus. Medium yellow. Three phases. First a rich, tropical entry with fat pineapple and ripe citrus fruit. Then, transiently, a leaner, more saline aspect with florality. Finally, somewhat clunky wood rules. I've never had a great experience with this wine. If I were to describe it in an equation of sorts, I would say that it reflects Raveneau > vintage >> Chablis style and character.

Quite typical Chablis and Raveneau, but has a slight dullness of acidity especially on the finish that I think comes from the vintage, quite fragrant, flint and shell, a hint of brown butter, young but not totally fresh.

Unique once again in its '06-ness, more a round classically chardonnay vs. the minerally seashell and truffle Raveneau usually is. Still a lot of cinnamon, pear, gunsmoke and white floral notes. A bit softer with some grapefruit and spice.

Amazing. Tart and structured like a great Chablis with a little wood/hazelnut to round it out. Nose of the sea, lime, nut, cheese, and light tarragon. Sharp and tart palate of seashells, lime/lemon, flint, herbs, hazelnut, unripe pear skin, and sweet tarts. Probably the best pairing with dungeness I've ever had. Did not budge the 4-5 hours opened. Long life ahead. Wish I could afford more Raveneau!!!
