Although a bit old, it held up, and had classic Amarone tast- dark, chewy, rich, warm, slightly sweet, lingering.

A positive surprise. Eighteen years of age the wine is in a wonderful spot. Deep dark color! Spicy and sweet nose. Complex bouquet of dried fruit, cherries, raisins embedded in an overall sweetness. Light on the tongue but with great depth in the aftertaste. Great length. A joy to drink. Will hold for some more years but why wait?

Color - dark and opaque burgundy, nose - black raspberry, ripe cherries. mouth- a powerful concentration of flavors, first a gentle sweetness and then a refined bitterness, the wine is very balanced. Soft tannins. In my estimation, it can be aged for another 10-15 years and still be enjoyed now. amazing Amarone.

A private lunch with a friend (The Ritz Restaurant *, The Ritz Hotel, London, UK) : Recent release, Collezione Grandi Annate. At a beautiful stage in its development, wonderfully complex evolution of nuts, forest floor, leather, whilst retaining lovely freshness and fruit, rich and powerful but not alcoholic, finely grained tannins, balsamic finish with excellent length.

Masi -whose owner is mr. Boscaini - is the pioneer of Amarone wine, but Costasera only in some 5star vintages expresses its full potential. Thus, Costasera 2006 is a decent amarone able to deliver at the same time some freshness and fruit - on one side - and hints of underbrush and leather on the other. Nonetheless I usually rate this Amarone lower than Serego Alighieri (owned by Masi too), Tommasi, Zenato and others (avoiding the Big Names btw). Drink …

Jeroboam. Good fill level and cork in fairly good condition. This wine was decanted but showed hardly any sediment. It did show a bit more evolution than I had anticipated from this format. It's largely on the tertiary side with little fruit remaining. The balance was not quite what I had hoped for. It almost comes across a little clumsy lacking the elegance and texture than some of the better aged Amarone wines have to offer. Still an enjoyable wine …

Medium garnet clear, with some variation to the rim. Nose of violets and minerals medium to full body with resolved tannins wrapped around dark fruits and enough acid to keep it balanced. Good finish and delicious.

Excellent overall. Short 20 min decant. Expressive nose of dark fruit with notes of fig and tar. Similar on the palate with nice rich fruit well balanced with acidity. Smooth tannins on the enjoyable finish. Elegant wine that is showing some nice mature elements.

A wine that deviates from the rule of Italy being a great wine country. Wines from Veneto, and Amarone wines in particular are all but enjoyable. Its simply shitty industrial waste, and should not be bottled and sold. I can't understand how anyone could enjoy anything even remotely as repellant as this stuff.

Served with Guinness beef stew. Opened ~ 30 minutes before serving. Bottle check: opaque garnet, very dark, a touch of brick throughout. Smell was prunes, raisiney, totally not enticing. Tried decanting, but with little effect. Calling this bottle flawed, with no score. Perhaps it was simply over the hill dead, but practically it was undrinkable.

2nd LI Blind BYO (Primi Italian Steakhouse Islip) : Early reductive notes thankfully abated revealing an edgy, complex wine with real lift and vibrancy. Great match with the boldly flavored lamb sausage pasta. Impressive.

This benefited from a decant. Beautiful and complex aromas of ripe/dried red cherries, black plums, raisins, sweet baking spices, balsamic, tobacco, earth. The palate is dry but with a hint of residual sugar. The flavors are consistent with the nose, with medium acidity, medium (+) tannins and high alcohol. Full-bodied and rich, in a savory, balsamic style. It is drinking well now, by itself or with food, but should continue to show well for at least another five years.

Cork turned to dust shortly after breaking in two, likely had storage issues as this bottle was maderized, prune nose with lots of nutty/caramel notes. Palate was same and reminiscent of sherry.

Not as good as the last couple of bottles. This is usually a favorite of mine. Perhaps I didn't give it enough time after pulling it up from the cellar. It was missing the raisiney goodness I usually get from this wine. It improved after an hour or two. I'll have to remember to give the next bottle more time out of the cellar before opening.

This is a fantastic example of aged amarone. Still going quite strong. Strong laser like nose of dark fruits, dominated by cherry, as well as blood, iron and dark chocolate. Amazing textured and layered tastes of cherry, other fruits, blood. Finish goes on and on with hints of cherry, chocolate, blood. This was a great wine to enjoy. Will supplement as it evolves over time. A few hours later -- this is even better with time. A nice raisiny flavor …
