Appearance: Medium tawny. Nose: Raisins. Dates. Tobacco. Dried cranberries. Leather. Medium plus intensity. Palate: Dates. Raisins. Dried cherries. Medium tannins. Medium acidity. Medium minus body. Medium flavour intensity. Finish: Dried fruits. Medium plus. Very good for its age. Will clearly not improve, but interesting nonetheless.

Blind tasting. Ruby-red and a garnet-red at the edges. The nose is immediately greeted by the scent of wet forest floor, mushrooms and cherries. Aromas of clove, cinnamon, black olives, black pepper, redcurrant, leather, dried tobacco leaves and traces of acetone join in after some additional aeration. On the palate the flavors were wild berries, cherries, licorice and fine wood. Medium-plus body with smooth and ripe tannins, medium-strong alcohol and a noticeable acidity that left an edgy and unround impression. …

Completely soaked cork with nasty fungus on the outside - not promising. But brilliant ruby color with barely any bricking at the edges. Fragrant nose of streamlined but pure red berry laced with scents of tobacco, leather, and a bit of cassis. Oh my, buoyant sweet red plum and cherry fruit with strawberry elements layering on the tongue with zip and clarity, carrying its oak like a weightless mantle. Complicating notes of leather, currant, sweet licorice. Surprising, youthful acidity and …

Medium body. Full brick color. Mild and sweet tannins. The wine changed dramatically over the course of a few hours. Very oxidized and pruny upon opening. It tasted over the hill and past its time. But then after about an hour the wine came into balance. Fruit emerged. Sweet plum, cherry, cedar, and pepsin flavors. Not sure how much time this has left, however. Drink now. Lovely stuff. Lots of sediment, decant a must. 12.5% abv.

port, toffee, vanilla, old catcher's mitt; brown color; all secondary, no fruit, some acidity, but too delicate for strong-flavored foods

Good bottle. The cork was a bit dry on top due to incorrect storage the last four years in room temperature. But the wine was great. Brick colour. Mature. Lovely mature bouquet. Leather, Cigar box, red berries, herbs, oak, vanilla, liqourice and plum. Great texture. This wine is transformed into a very Bordeaux like wine. Velvety tannins, good acidity, a bit meaty, medium to full body. Great balance. Need some time in decanter, best after 5 hours.

"Simple" Friday Dinner: Guan Hin (Guan Hin / Extra Space) : This was really nice indeed. Still at least 5-6 years too young, but it was already tremendously enjoyable - in fact, it was my wine of the night all the way until a pair of ridiculously good sweets knocked it off its perched. I was a bit distracted by the Bordeaux-like bottle shape when it was first served blind, but once that was put aside, this was clearly classic …

Wonderfully perfumed nose, blueberries and violets, dark flowers. Still showing fresh fruits, smooth acidity and tannins, stewed plums, blueberries, tea leaves and dark cherries on the finish. Great wine.

On opening there was a distinct Burgundy/old Rioja note to the nose. On the palate it was a touch sharp leaning towards thin. Aged colour. With time it seemed to darken in colour and put on weight. It lost the initial sharpness and over a few hours developed a sweetish flavour. Quite a voluptious texture in the mouth. This is lovely old Rioja. If you have any and plan to drink at one sitting I suggest a long slow oxygenation.

From Magnum. Orange in the rim. Wow, an aged bouquent of dried orange peel, dry plum candy, cherry and whiff of five spice. In the mouth, the fruit has mostly dried out. Only a faded sense of plum is evinced on the second sip. Mostly acidity and a spiny structure is left with the faintest trace of tannin in the end.

The cork was completely stained and the level was upper shoulder. The content seemed to be ok,though initially very thin on the nose and palate. It did open up quite fast, showing then nice aromas of tobacco and barnyard on the nose.Medium palate with tobacco, barnyard, leather, some bright red fruit and completely softened tannins.Drinking still well but I would not keep this for very long anymore.

We did a mini-vertical using the 1982 and the 1985 vintages of this wine. My son was born in 82 and my daughter in 84 so it was close to their birth years and we shared the wines with them on a family getaway. They were amazed the wines were as old as they were. The ‘82 had some seepage from the cork and was noticeable browner as I decanted them. We tried the ’85 first and it was a …

What a fun bottle; its taste really transformed over the hour that we drank it. We had opened and let it breathed for 1 hour before drinking. Brownish ruby color, not over complex with an initially alcohol nose that dissipated over the first hour of drinking. Had light raspberry/cherry flavor with slight tobacco/leather flavors and mild vanilla finish.

Confraria A.C. (Porto Rubaiyat) : Rubi-granada.
