Tahbilk, Shiraz, Nagambie Lakes

Only slight browning. Very sophisticated nose of treated wood and lamb stew. Very balanced mouth - all hard edges are smoothed out with good stewed fruits and acid. Probably better 10 years ago but still has a lot of life even after being open for 4 hours.

"90th" Joint Birthday : Dusty, tar and cedar on the nose. Medium length and depth. Just a little sweet fruit left on the palate, holding on for now!

1981 vintage

A boney build that almost points to Northern Rhone. Mineral streaks and blood, dry red fruits and quite good length. Lack of warm lets it down a bit.

Vintage railway carriage, plums, cherry, both a little stewed. Dusty tannin. 89 or 90 ... I’ll err on the side of generosity as the memory of my previous unscored taste was pretty impressive.

Medium purple with some garnet. Nose is good berries with spice. Palate is Concord grape and cassis with a touch of cedar. Good balance of acid and tannins.

Medium to dark purple with developing garnet. Deep dark cherry spice with earthy tones. Well balanced fruit spice acid and tannins. Probably at it�s best drinking window.

Plum fruit, some berries, savory and subdued. Not that popular here. I only had it on Day 2 but I heard it went ok with Mamoun's. Not a rebuy for us.

Nose of sour cherry and blackberry, with background notes of balsamic vinegar, oak, and campfire smoke. Palate is medium-bodied and moderately oxidised, with a good balance of fruit, lactic acid, and oak. Flavours of sour cherry, blackberry, and pastrami.

{screwcap, 13.5%}Slightly developing, savoury-type shiraz. Understated mulberry and plum fruit, gentle spice but not really peppery on the palate. Low/medium dusty tannins, fine-grained, and seemingly as much grapeskin as oak - more so, really. Medium acid too; it's quite fresh, helped but a tart, ultra-dry character.. Medium length finish. Quite subtle, understated for new world shiraz. Quietly satisfying, with another half-dozen years in front of it easily.

Colour: inky plum red Nose: smoky, liquorice, eucalypt leaf. Mulberry, plum, blackberry, candied red berries. Old oak, cigar box. Old French oak. Palate: lots of black fruit -- mulberry, plum, blackberry. Smokey, eucalyptus leaf, liquorice. Medium bodied, mild berry like acidity, fine grained drying tannins. Elegant. Lovely. 13,5% alcohol

Dark slightly cloudy magenta. Fresh plum, violet, and cedar nose. Medium bodied, blackberries, black cherries, woody tannins, blueberries, and a short to medium dusty finish. Great on entry, but kind of dies on the finish.

{screwcap, 13.5%} Touch of sweet plums on the palate. Partly developed; medium tannins, that slightly eucalypt, mid-Victorian red-wine character. Cuddly and friendly, medium-body, short/medium length dry finish. Fair, will hold, don't see great potential though.

Tahbilk visit with Alistair Purbrick and Neil Larson (Tahbilk Winery, Nagambie Lakes, Victoria.) : Showing some development and further integration. Spectrum of blueberry, riberry, pepper and almond aromas. Very juicy and dense palate, showing elegance in it's integration. Fruit weight carries this for about 15 seconds. Hard to believe you can buy this for under 20 bucks. GDD: 1868 ALC: 13.5%

Blackberry, mulberry and currant for the nose. Well balanced with very soft and fine tannins. Rich mouthfeel with medium body. Nice medium length finish. Throws a fair amount of sediment at the end.

Mulberry, plum and vanilla oak on the nose. Medium to full bodied with nearly complete tannic integration. Solid and rich dark fruit flavors for the palate. Ordinary medium length finish. Consistently delivers from one vintage to the next.

Pepper, oak and dusty dark fruit on the nose. Fruit right there in a strong greeting before capitulation to quite a short finish. Fine tannins, little acidity. At the price this is very acceptable and can help safeguard the bigger hitting bottles in the cellar.

Ok I get it! Don't drink the cab and shiraz within 5 - 6 years. Looking slightly subdued but almost certainly will get better. Mildly gamey, smooth tannin but always persistent. Good length and a triumph for the price point for fans of the subtle old world style.

Very dark red but not inky. Vanilla oak,smoke and blackberry jam. Medium body, with flavours like the aroma. This is energized by the acid and leaves a long finish and thin coat of grippy tannin on the teeth.

Decent Shiraz, not as good as the last vintage but very solid nonetheless - Dark, full bodied with a nose of plum, blueberry, pepper and vanilla, decent structure and balance, simple, sweet on the palate with good length, nice (88 Points).

{screwcap, 13.5%} Youthful, warm mulberries and plums, with just a touch of dust. Palate has fine, soft dusty tannins, a real blurry quality to the flavours, which match the nose. It's medium-bodied, a bit simple at this age, but feels nicely taut, and has quite good balance across the tongue, extending right to the back palate. Not exactly packed full of flavour; it's true to Tahbilk's fairly restrained style, and although probably identifiably New World, is far from a fruit …

Night two. Plum and mulberry, slightly stewed, with some spice and savoury undertones. Tongue coating tannins, albeit fairly gentle. Medium bodied. I remember liking it more the first night but didn't scribble the specifics. Now night three, at its best so far, not stewed, richer. Hey, maybe I'm the variable, not the wine?

Superb value! Great nose. Concentrated blackberry, plum and nice oak. Good length. You just can't ask for more at the price. And it cellars for a decade or two.

Tahbilk visit (Tahbilk winery) : {screwcap, 13.5%, $A18} Young. Dark mulberries and plums. Restrained in the Tahbilk way. Palate is dense but not heavy, if that makes sense. Flavours all at the black end of the fruit spectrum. Some earth characters, but it�s not dirty. Gentle dusty tannins. Medium, dry finish. Still rather tight; wants a few years to open up. Good to see the alcohol back under control from the 15% of a few years ago.

Amazing life still in this wine. Regarded by Tahbilk as one of the best they have made. Unsurprisingly contains a high amount of grapes from the 1860 vineyard. Barn yard, leathery nose. The palate is smooth and seamless. Astonishing length. Special.

Old note from 1994 19/20 Very deep hue. in need of decanting. Great concentration; cherry, smoke, tar, meaty, tobacco. Great complexity. Well balanced with good acidity. Long finish
