Light and translucent bricking red color; on the nose sweaty saddle, leather dust and dried rose petals. Light and ethereal at first, then intensifies somewhat with air contact. Deepish reddy brown. Slight austerity but otherwise good fruit and structure. Enough intensity and concentration to suggest this will improve over the next five years or so.

Excellent aged rioja. Light garnet bricking color. Intense aged nose. Typical aromas of dried fruits, nuts, orange rind, iron, old cabinet. Light body, high acidity,spicy, sweet red berries and sanguine orange, tea leaves.excellent balance and structure. Very long after taste that makes you reach out for the next sip. elegant and classy wine. Wonderful aged Rioja.

Still astonishing to drink at almost 40 years. As I'm the past, despite the age, it needs 30 minutes to open up. Very complex nose. Fruit still there for about an hour. Only one left....

Pale Red color; very translucent, bricking at the rim. On the nose dried rose petals and red berries; on the palate at first very reticent, even appearing frail. Developed nicely in the glass with exposure to air and rising temperature; then pleasant to drink. But not quite in the same league as the Berberana 1977 Centenario

Half. A good-un. Lovely garnet, really quite full and dense at the core. Victorian church pew, a touch of mushroom, and vestiges of red fruit on the nose. Initially quite bright acidity with a silky texture, filling out quite rapidly in the glass, plumping up and showing a mid weight texture that belies its years. Really very pleasant drinking indeed and held up well to a tartare of matured beef fillet. ***1/2

Ullaged to a little below base shoulder. Remarkably deep colour though quite cloudy with it. Meaty, bovril-like nose. This bottle poor cf previous, but perhaps not surprisingly given the level. Whilst not strictly faulty in the traditional sense, this hasn’t survived in anything more than an ‘historically interesting’ way.

This wine continues to impress. Initially ver btight. After one hour, sour cherries as well as sweet rasberry flavors. This is alive and doing well.

Another bottle opened. Wow - so much better on the nose - cooked strawberries, ripe mango, plums. I was hoping for some spice, but couldn't find any. This bottle is better than the last. Some life left.

Smells like bunsen burner and first aid kit. Faint strawberries and cranberries. The palate shows tart cherry scone without the baking spices. More medicinal like an iodine/betadine bath. The long finish extends the betadine and cherries for a minute or so... or longer

Mature Rioja @ Medlar (Medlar, London) : Full bottle. Similar mid garnet. A little volatile initially. Fresher on the palate, slightly more prominent acidity. Not quite as nuanced. Far more vital than from half bottle. Lacks the plushness and depth of the CVNEs though. Lots of interest but 'merely' very good. ****

Half. Low shoulder. Short wizened cork out in one piece. Bright garnet, even still a little ruby at the core. Recognisably Rioja. A touch or orange, warm leather and surprisingly bright red fruit. Mellow. Starts of a little musty, but this lifts and it seems to put on weight and gloss. Not a top flight mature Rioja, but an interesting and from this half, enjoyable drink that went very well with roast pheasant. Remarkably good for a 62 year old …

(from 37.5cl) The fill was to low shoulder. Colour was promising, pale ruby/garnet. Nose isn't giving up much. Old musty wood with a hint of traditional rioja in the background. On the palate it's equally dilute. No faults but this is certainly past its best. Interesting but not exciting.

Half. Top shoulder. A little musty initially, but clears up with air. Puts on weight and depth of fruit with air. Would have benefited with longer to breathe. Not quite the class and depth as the 59 Imoerial Reserva alongside, but really lovely once it gets going. ****

Half. Upper shoulder. Good cork. Amazing condition for a 61 year old half. A vibrant mid ruby with garnet at the rim. After a bit of air this shows some nice mid-red fruit on the nose and a touch of gentle spice. Vibrant on the palate. Very pleasant mature red wine - not complex but perfectly harmonious. Solid, with nothing memorable here either way. Blind I'd guess late 1970s to early 1980s. ***

Never having drank a wine this old, I didn't know what to expect. The wine had not been stored carefully. The cork came out clean, and when poured into a decanter, the color was a stunning deep red rust. After letting it sit, the nose was pleasant. The wine had good fruit and as the evening wore on, it opened to a wonderful wine. I only hope I hold out so well.

Personally, I found the wine to be quite bland, not flawed in any way, but with fading fruit. Was hoping it might improve with time in the glass, and I even decanted it for an hour to see if something more might show up, but unfortunately it faded even more. Has a nice bouquet on the nose, but the palate is quite muted. Hoped for more.

Terrific wines with outrageously good cassoulet as the supper club reconvenes. (Christine & Marty's.) : Shows red plummy and cherry fruit with blood, spice and old wood. The profile is darker than in many other old Rioja I've had, but the pert acidity is there.
