Domaine Hudelot-Baillet Bourgogne

Pity, this is Bretty. Initially sweet red fruits and baking spices on the nose, but the Brett takes over quickly, and is more noticeable on the palate - makes the acid pokey and the tannins very drying.

2021 Bourgogne Rouge (Chez moi) : Medium red, shinier and more purple than the Barthod. I really liked this, a neat and well made wine. Clean red fruit with something darker in there too, really pure and tasty, this was a new wine to me and really rather nice.

Fresh, crunchy, almost like Gamay. Very youthful, simple, tiny bit of cracked black pepper but plenty of dense, giving fruit. Lovely.

2021 Bourgogne Rouge Horizontal (Chez, JL, E11) : Another classy effort here; plum fruit, cassis and a sweet earthiness on the nose with just a touch of Macadamia in the margins. The palate is a tad less giving here than the Barthod. Feels a couple of years younger. Palate starts with a strawberry fruit character that continues onto the mid palate. The balanced and charming finish a tad more on the raspberry. Lovely wine.

Ruby, translucent, clear. Moderately pronounced nose of sweet red raspberry, baking spices, vanilla, hint of reductive funk. Bright acid, slightly green, furry tannins, similar to walnut skin. Moderate intensity of flavours, including red raspberry, some darker blackberry, savoury meatiness, slight bitterness. Good QPR.

Diam. Nicely perfumed on the nose with bright red fruit, garrigue, mandarin oil, a hint of blood and bone, and stoney minerals. Acidity provides high notes and there’s a faint kick of some pithy tannins on the finish. Pretty well balanced with light to medium body. Despite it’s appellation, this will develop well and improve over a 8-10 years.

It was sold to me as a basic Burgundy and started out that way. Not much going on in the nose and a tight, almost carbonic feel up front. Twenty minutes later, though, it started to sing. Okay, not opera — but high notes were hit.
