Domaine Jean Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets

Decanted for some fine sediment. No bret on this one, unlike our last bottle. Pretty nose of red berries with a hint of forest floor. Medium bodied with dark plum fruit. Surprisingly tannic at first, mouth coating and chalky, don’t remember that at all in previous bottles, but it relaxed and softened with time in the decanter and glass. In a nice place but no rush to open these.

Pleasure to drink bottle #2 which has been squirreled away, out of my possession, for years. Nose - beautiful, boysenberry, close but not yet surripe, surprisingly rich for volnay, blinded would never guess where this hails from. A fruit fly would love this. Mouth - gorgeous, dark fruit but very fresh, lively acidity, some balsamic notes. Great wine. Memorable volnay. Husbanding the ‘09 in hope it develops similarly.

Decanted for a bit of sediment. Stinky nose, seemed like Bret, didn’t blow off over a couple of hours. But the palate tasted clean with cherry and raspberry fruit concentrated by age, with some nice autumnal flavors around the edges. No hurry to drink up.

Lovely Volnay, showy, deep and satisfying. Wide open, revealing lots of spicy earthy fruit - and even more after a few hours open. Palate more on the earthy spicy-laden side, but with good length and satisfying energetic balance. Very good now and will be good for quite some time.

This did not disappoint.Soft and deep, classic profile and an over achieving bottle from what turned out to be a great vintage. I suspect this is at peak but solid bottles should continue to drink well for at least 3+ years

Elected to not decant; left open for 3 hours. Deep garnet color. Gorgeous nose featuring red fruit/berries, licorice, floral notes and forest floor. Broad medium weight fruit with silky persistence, lightly substantial tannins and mineral acid. Great match for lobster with peas and herbs risotto. Harmonious now but with years to go.

On the nose, moss, dark fruited for Volnay, with some spice and cola. Full bodied for pinot, broad shouldered and structured and with a meatiness to it. Still quite youthful on the palate with ripe fruit, more cola, pomegranate, moss, iron, some mace, and cooler herbal notes. This is broad stroked with a chewiness to the fruit. Medium ruby with some burnt brick outer highlights. Let open for about 45 min. Nose is cherry cola, charred oak, black pepper & damp soil. Nice acidity and gentle tannins that slowly build up. Pomegranate, cola, bruised cherry, raspberry. Not much reason to hold on it, but you could.

The 1999 Domaine Y. Clerget Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets is in a fantastic spot right now, perched just beneath the peak of its lifespan. It exhibits a marvelously complex bouquet of mushroom, raspberry, cherry, smoke, earth, spice, licorice and minerals. In the mouth the wine is much fresher than the nose would suggest, showing bright red fruit, minerality and utter seamlessness. Drink now.

Wednesday Tasting at Kevin’s (Kevin's (Rocknroller) House):. Splash decant only in consideration of its' age. Wow nose; so inviting (sniff me but don't drink me if you can resist). This is much brighter and fruiter than the 09 Leroy Bourogne we started with. Sweet red cheries/rasberries.Also fuller body than Leroy, still medium body. Tannins are well integrated with fruit and acid; everything seems in harmony at this age. Still has shelf life ahead, but who'd wait longer? Thanks for sharing …

Wednesday Tasting at Kevin’s (Kevin's (Rocknroller) House) : Nose: Very red fruited, cassis, and minerality. Palate: Ideal balance of fruit to acids. Subtle cherries and raspberries and a really elegant finish. 92+ points.

A Long Overdue Wednesday Wine Lunch (Rocknroller's (Kevin & Vicki's Place)) : Medium red color. Splash decant, drank 2 glasses over an hour plus. Some very nice red fruits on the nose and palate, cherry and red raspberry with more sublte hints of darker fruit in the background, some scorched earth, licorice, wood spice, earthy, medium body, and an impressive silky texture. Rock solid again and a super value.

Tim's wedding (Chicago, IL) : Seriously, what more could you ask for from such a "lowly" bottle of Volnay? This had one of the most convincing noses of all the wines we had tonight, with a mix of sweet black fruit and mushrooms. The palate is not overwrought at all, but has tart black-fruited acids, as well as a lovely mineral freshness. In a perfect drinking spot right now.

This bottle was nice over 2 days, but it doesn't make up for the corked bottle that Envoyer would not do anything about. Anyway, good minerality, acidity and red fruit. Modestly complex. I'm happy to have bought this recently and enjoy it, but it's not something I would waste cellar space on for 15 years. And I also agree that Meerlust's note is spot on.

Dark red color. PNP, drank 2+ glasses with a tasting menu over 2 hours. This developed so nicely in glass that by the end I was still trying to eek out a drop more and another whiff. The nose has cherry, floral, rose hips, subtle oak, spices. The palate has medium body, elegant, floral, black cherry, red currant, spices, iron, mineral, medium tannins, long finish. Very nice structure and balance.

Popped and poured, this started a bit funky but that completely blew off after about an hour in the glass. Maybe not quite as compelling as our last bottle but I was preoccupied with great food and company.

I really like Meerlust's TN from this past October. Our blt showed very simularly. This producer is not quite in D' Angerville's or Montille's league but, the wine is honest, transparent and intriguing with classic Burg flavors and aromas. Clerget applies a depth touch with oak and is totally in my wheelhouse. A great producer for honest Volnay and value.
