Casal de Loivos Douro

Coming back to this wine after 12 years (my last note on this was in 2008). Still big and very smooth. Thick texture, but not ponderous. Outstanding acidity. This has barely changed in the last 12 years, except the structure is much more in balance. Very impressive! 94 points.

Nice acid,long finish, smooth tannins; initially grapey, with in your face fruit, probably the vintage. nice structure and finesse. Begs for meat dishes. a wonderful surprise.

Popped and poured, room temp. 14.5% alc. Deep crimson, but not opaque. Saturated nose of spice, black fruit and tart cherries. Full and lush midpalate with currant, black fruit repeating. Great smooth texture and mouthfeel. Finishes long but with firm tannins and balancing acid. This is a fantastic food wine that rivals many California cabs. Lush but balanced. Goes well with short ribs and rich desserts.

Dark ruby color. Deep notes of roasted cherries and smoke. Big fruit on entry. Huge mid-palate. Very suave, thick fruit.. but surprising balanced. Touch of acid and the wood is there, but not over oaked. Long caressing finish. A big, big success for the 2003 vintage! 94 points.
