Domaine Robert Groffier Chambolle-Musigny

After 3 hours of bottle breathing the wine jumps out of the glass with juicy red and back fruits, rose petals, leather, mushrooms, with a woody edge and a slight bit of brown sugar to finish. Beautiful.

Brilliant ruby. Fragrant and fruity, no distracting aromas. Very pleasant medium weight pinot noir, no fireworks but very tasty and totally intact, even youthful. No trace of oak remaining, as one would predict for a 26 y.o. wine. Perhaps a bit short on the finish but that’s just nitpicking. A very enjoyable 1er cru Burgundy in its prime. No hurry.

Similar to my 2019 tasting with a bit more dark cherry and boysenberry. Love the earth and mushroom tones and leather on the finish!

Blind. Decently ripe dark fruit with very good concentration. Evidently a fine vintage, some Morey earthiness, with Chambolle meatiness emerging only much later. Lacy silky palate. 2002 Dujac Bonnes Mares? Not as strong as last bottle. 93

PNP at Juliet. Delicately elegant yet with some rustic undertone from the tannin. Chambolle flowers and spice , with a long finish . Possibly could benefit from a little more cellar time.

Acker's COVID-Vaccinated BYO Dinner and Auction Simulcast (Craft - New York NY) : Small glass, brief note. A broad array of rich and dense black and red cherry throughout. Subtle spice and woodsy notes. A touch of new oak protrudes, but without interfering in my ability to tremendously enjoy this wine. Good depth and length. Possible upside from here.

Acker Auction BYO (Craft NYC) : Huge nose with a rich core of cherry made complex with intense spice, florals and sweet earth. Seamless, pure cherry fruit with loads of spice and even some wood toast that remains to be integrated. Wow, so complex in the finish.

Nose has wafting Chambolle perfume, roses, soft spice, robust blue and red berry fruit, and faint rusticity and pleasant earth. Highly expressive with big projection. Elegant and finessed, subtle and very pretty although the fruit is still youthful. A brilliant look at the Amoureuses terroir. Distinctive. Palate is balanced and beautifully soft. Long silky finish. Very impressive. Probably the best Groffier I’ve had.

I understand why some of the ct score on this wine is low. Nose has earth, metal, oak, meat stock and dark fruit. Palate is rustic with some barnyard and big dark fruit. It slightly opened up with 2 hrs in the glass. Given I was also not impressed by his 99 sentier, i would believe groffier did not do a very good job in this vintage. Very interested in how this wine will develop with more aging

Medium red with some browning at the rim. Nose was quite muted, some red fruits, earth and smoke. Palate seemed rather flabby with a real lack of structure, simply very thin and weedy. Fruits was lacking, the wine had smoke, oak and wood, but nothing else. No complexity, finish or excitement for such a good plot.

Souper chez le Baron (Joliette) : Un nez moderne, viandeux, avec fruit noir et violettes La bouche est plutôt moderne, mais bien fraiche et hyper savoureuse, avec une très belle finesse de tanins. Un vin gorgé de fruit, cochon! C'est une anomalie, une sorte de croisement entre le Rhône et la Bourgogne. Totalement savoureux, très démonstratif, presque racoleur, mais adorable. Dense et long, peut-être le Chambolle le plus tannique que j'ai pris. 94-95 pts

Bloody hell, does this even smell of Burgundy let alone Chambolle? In my book (The Bumper Book of Dissolute Larks is my book) Chambolle should not smell like an inky, thick Syrah and Chambolle Amoureuses should be distinctly more captivating and gorgeous than this rather severe nose which is utterly devoid of the allure. It is a pretty sad day when people make Chambolle Amoureuses that smells so uninviting; the village and vineyard should be imbuing it with lewdly enjoyable …

Dujac City - Burgundy Fest (Waterford Wine Co. Tasting Room) : Deep red/purple in the glass. Perfumed and powerful nose. Warming nose of earth and cherry. Tart cherries hit you upfront. Smooth body laced with beautiful earthiness. Long, long finish.

Pretty red and black fruit aromatics, primary yet. Masculine and edgy, acidic and backwards at this point; there was some lovely red and blue pinot fruit in here, strangled by the structure and acidity. This improved with air, and food, but never lost the edginess. Difficult to judge, because of its obvious youth, but an 86 on this night. Annual Burgundy Kick Off (RN 74, San Francisco) : Dark and youthful appearance. Briary black fruit. Relatively simple and very dense. Primary and quite oaky. Large scaled and atypical for Chambolle with little sense of place.

XMas Eve at Michel's. Needed more air than we gave it. Amazing potential here. Precise fruit, yet it's still hiding. An interesting underlying note of mincemeat. My six year old daughter's note on the nose: "red and purple cherries, black grapes and grape juice". Let it age some more, or give it a lot of air.
