2001 vintage

lots of vanilla and marzipan on the nose at first, which was a surprise. Got the marmalade, too, after 30 years. This was ripe and rounded on the palate, but the acidity was high enough to balance it. The sweetness was nice enough to temper the heat in Sichuan cuisine.

1994 vintage

From Riesling Study at Pizzeria Beddia - no extensive notes but this was a true highlight amongst many great bottles. A wine of great depth and with beautifully-evolved flavors, a delight to behold and at peak maturity but good for easily another decade if not longer.

Tired, fading. After half a case, this wine has never seemed to live up to its billing, despite my last note. Maybe poor storage in shipping or an off bottle.

From 75cl, P+P. Medium-to-full-bodied Auslese, with excellent mature petrol-tinged scent, unctuous yet relatively lithe texture, distinct slate minerality and a vibrant acidic backbone. Many years in store, but boy, was this delicious tonight... 90–91P

AP #27. This shows very juicy and acidic in the nose - unripe pineapple and maybe some persimmon, maybe even a oily touch of lychee. It a little blocky on the nose. Pulled on a whim and one of my few remaining 2001s. Pale gold with a chartreuse tint. Absolutely no legs on the stem but that would be consistent with labeled 7.5 ABV. This was all it should be: tart, a bit sweet. A little too sweet for my preferences. A sound MSR Auslese from a first-class vigneron. As well-made as these wines are, they're just a bit too twee for me, these days. Have to figure out what to eat with my remaining bottles.

Striking oiliness, deep yellow colour. Opulent nose of pineapple, apple, honey. Palate is beautifully balanced, so refreshing yet sweet. Drank with slow cooked pork belly on BBQ.

Same notes as in January, but more intensity and a bit more nuances obviously due to bottle variations.

Recognized blind as a Grünhäuser. A bit shy at first, it then develops a nice nose of red and white currant, mint, nettle and sorrel, very detailed, very elegant, very complex. Great balance in the mouth, very fresh and zesty, a bit minty again, fresh apple tartness. Long and detailed finish. This is what Ruwer Riesling is about for me.

had higher expectations given the vintage and previous notes. I followed the wine over a week, but it always underwhelmed. Nice honey lemon profile and good acidity throughout but there is a slightly off note mid palate which comes forth most of the time. solid but not special.

Great balance of richness and acidity, very food-friendly despite the sweetness, evolving slowly and gaining in complexity. Still has that razor-sharp grapefruity core that I noted on previous occasions.

Nice, well-preserved Auslese, a relief after a row of 2001 disappointments tasted 10 years after... Fine, exotic, lively acidity; rainwater-like mid-palate. Excellent value. Hard to believe it has only 7,5% alc. 88P(+)

AP 3 536 014 7-95, 7.5 percent by volume. From Paul Mann, Michigan importer's, cellar; without importer's labels and so appears to be a personal purchase, perhaps hand-carried. Striking burnt matches nose. Citric, limey undercurrents. Oily, heavy and sweet with a wonderful smoothness and no sharp edges. Unbelievably smooth finish showing tropical fruit and marmalade. Excellent.
