Well, obviously I held onto this too long. On the other hand, it is a modestly enjoyable wine. Definitely faded, but not acidic. Not quite glyceriney, which is sometimes the payoff for over the hill Pinots. Imagine a good, 90-rated Pinot, that just lost its fruit. That's it. Perfectly fine to drink. Probably no more of these out there, so who cares?

Translucent ruby with beginnings of slight pale bricking on the rim. Sweet boquet of strawberries and tea and a little hint of ethanol or petrol at first. No earthiness or intense secondary-style aromas on the nose. Texture is soft and smooth with well resolved tannins. Mouth is full of sweetish and fruity pinot varietal flavors. There is some secondary complexity but mostly primary flavors of fruit: stawberry and, I hate to say it, a little bit of banana that disappears …

14.3%...Medium ruby...tea, roses, with subtle earth that becomes a larger and larger part of the picture as the wine is allowed to breathe - extremely feminine, which was somewhat unexpected IMO...medium-bodied, spicy, structured - very burgundian, balanced, but it seems to have some power in reserve that is allowing it a long life...I'd wait another couple of years to see what this gorgeous Pinot does! Not representative of what SLH has done in the past from Gary's, but I'll take …

Tasting at winery. Impressive Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir to drink over the next couple of years. Starts with red and black cherry aromas, then mostly red cherry flavors to start. Some leather and mushroom character is starting to come through, adding nuance and complexity through to long finish with good energy. Mature character is very appealing but also makes me think this is best 2005-2008, but not much later than that.

Quick Trip to Napa and Sonoma; 8/3/2002-8/4/2002 (Napa and Sonoma) : Tasting at winery. Forward cherry aromas with subtle spice. Fruit slightly less pronounced on palate with some tannins and acidity that will benefit from a year or two in bottle to soften.
