Domaine Francois Bertheau, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Light maroon / pink. Definitely starting to show a brownish tinge. Nose is initially open; crushed rose petal, ripe and berry fruit. Palate starts out a bit tight but rapidly opens with air. A bit acidic but with mouth watering cherry. With an hour of air it's in the zone: layers of clean berry fruit just beginning to let a hint of funk peek through underneath. Really starting to come into its own.

Just at the early side of its drinking window. I personally would love another 7-8 years of age (hoping it reaches the aromatic depths of the lovely 2002 we had beside it). Right now, it has very much Grand Cru weight and poise, even a bit masculine compared to the 2002, with tannins still slightly grippy. An evening at Citrin in Santa Monica (Citrin) : Ruby color with slight garnet. The nose is quite rustic, with red cherries, dark berries, herbs, underbrush and spice. The plate is tense and coiled, with an iron/blood finish in addition to the flavors above. This is quite complex on the palate, but needs a few years to unfold.

Beautiful wine. Seemed very delicate when I opened it so I was afraid to decant but after 15 minutes or so I realized it needed it. Wine opened up nicely. Very interesting combo of red fruits contrasted with darker flavors and aromas. Red cherry, dates , and a hint of strawberry. Tar, earthy soil , and clove . Flowers too. Rhys vs White Burgundy Blind (A collector's home) : Translucent red color, slightly orange at the rim. Deeper nose than wine 1, with sappy red cherry fruit and a deeper bass note compared to wine 1. Medium weight palate, lithe with more fruit intensity compared to wine 1 and more fine grained tannins on the finish. I slightly preferred wine 1.

A Good Wednesday: Bertheau x3, Arnoux, Geantet Pansiot, Niellon, Guffens Heynen; 3/20/2024-3/22/2024 : Blind #1...Coravin....Acid- silky chambolle- but a spiced power. Elegant- drinking Great. I think we all liked this- menthol... pedigree.

Delicious and quite intense aromas of ripe red berries like strawberries. Quite concentrated and focused on the palate. Soft tannins for a 2006. Pure and elegant for a Bonnes Mares. Lacks, however, the greatness of the best grand cru's. Maybe in need of more time in the cellar.

Rich, red-black fruited, med tart, grippy, gritty, touch of gunflint. 13.5% Alc. Liked this quite a lot once it warmed up and woke up. Steen Öhman (Winehog) calls Bonne Mares the "Darker side of Chambolle" I would agree. Tastes like the love child of MSD and Chambolle, but by the map, Bertheau's parcel is smack in the middle of Bonne Mare.

(SYP) PNP A surprisingly sweet nose of red fruit, spices and dates. On the palate, it has soft tannins, sweet fruit, poking acidity and alcohol. There is also some warmth to the finish. No much change during 4 hours of drinking. A bottle suspected of heat damage.

Tasted over 2 hrs -very dark blood red with some bricking -glorious dark berry fruit vinyl faint mature note -med acidity, med weight lean plum mineral-driven, med- tannins -excellent firmly on its mature plateau

Strawberry, spice, herbs and minerals. A feminine BM that retains good grip and power of the terroir. Drinking nicely.

2007 vintage

Sappy red fruit, orange peel and flowers. Good clarity and structure on the palate. Drinking nicely with two hours of air.

Compared to the open knitted 2010 Les Amoureuses, the Bonnes Mares is still a bit coiled. Good underlying structure to become much better but the wine is overall a bit quiet and muted tonight.

I only decanted an hour before and maybe this meant the wine didn’t open up so much as a prior bottle , wonderful nose fruit and good length

Disappointing. Excellent color and reasonable fill on the bottle, the wine just didn't shine. Not really flawed but a bit dried out; I expected more. I have another which hopefully will have retained its fruit and won't fall flat.

This was spectacular. Rich sappy intense fruit, a little touch of earthy rusticity in an otherwise silky and pure wine. Great mouthfeel and a long finish. Vibrant well-integrated acids. Not a heavy wine, but good tannic structure to take this wine through the next 10-20 years. Really super Bonnes Mares.

Cloudy burgundy color with faint browning. Nose very funky, earthy and animal. Palate Silky red fruit with an iron streak and a pronounced herbal character. Appealing lightness in the mouth. For a grand cru, showing its age perhaps more than expected, but nonetheless an interesting drink. would be good paired with lamb, game, etc. 93 pts

Slow oxed for an hour before serving. Spice, wild berries, flowers, orange peel and soil on the nose. Dense on the palate with good complexity and underlying substance that resembled the nose. Such a classic bonnes mares which benefitted from a weaker vintage. It has just entered its drinking window with lots of life left. 93+

Youthful but approachable. Mouth coating pure red cherry with clay and earth beneath. Needs 10 years to shed its primary layer and gain more complexity. Upside from here.

2006 vintage

Mentholated cherry, soil and anise on the nose. Lithe palate, silky and soft on entry, then delivers some puckering acidity and drying tannins on the juicy finish. Not a powerful Bonnes-Mares but very good nonetheless.

2007 vintage

This had a great nose, colour looked ready if not a touch brown but no worries it had secondary but so so long , it took me nearly three hours to drink as I was testing the time length of the secondary , fantastic, and only cost 190 bucks, just goes to show you need to shop around but always check out on burghound, who actually underrated this at 92 , never mind , 92 put me on the trail.

A private dinner hosted by Chris Janselijn, Mattijs Koornneef & Midas van der Meiden (Restaurant The Lobby Fizeaustraat, Hotel V, Amsterdam, NL) : Magnum. Quite a rich and spicy style, clearly terres rouges, blue fruit, avoids the austerity of the vintage, surprisingly moderate tannins, slightly nervous, perhaps not a perfect bottle? Not rated.

Corovin. Nose of mushroom, cranberry and damp forest. Plenty of acidity and tannins here. Cranberry. Cherry minerals and damp earth on the palate with medium tangy finish. Only decanted 1 hour. Ok at this stage but poor QPR.

Poured into a wide-bottom decanter. Notes from about 3 hrs open. Wow, exactly what I was in the mood for. Intense enough to pair with lamb shank, but also drank well by itself. Amazing complexity on the nose, with chewy red fruit, raspberry coulis, perfectly integrated oak toast/coconut etc. On the palate, great acidity, and great texture: very silky, but the acidity always grabs you. More clean red fruit and a very long, spicy finish.

Intense aromas of dark red fruits. Intense, focused and vigorous in the mouth. Soft and fine tannins for a 2006. Pure fruit, and elegant for a Bonnes Mares.

3rd Annual Wilson School Auction Tasting : Slow-ox'd 4 hrs -med dark red, minimal bricking -mild Burg funk, subtle somber dark red fruit and earthiness -med acidity, med weight med concentration, tightly coiled earth-dominant -serious, fairly closed, more powerful but much less generous at this point than 2010 Chambolle AC tasted side by side, needs more time

Flowers, power and the iron fist. A concoction of polished red fruits, lovely petals and bright sparkles of burg umami.

Really pure, sweet cherry fruit on the nose with some nice earthiness on the palate. Not surprisingly this is still pretty primary and if I had another bottle I'd wait a while to drink it.

2006 vintage

For the first fifteen minutes we were in love with this wine. Gorgeous aromas of Turkish delight, a little sous bois, strawberries. Palate showed no sign of hail. Unfortunately, the wine began to collapse, and as the fruit left the glass, we were left with plenty of acid and bits of structure.

1983 vintage

Deliciously pure wine without artifice. It opens up seriously savoury, all iron meat and earth. With air the wine sweetens from the heart and cherry and blueberry fruits come to the fore. There’s a scent of violets to the aroma and some muskiness to the flavour profile. It is only mid-weight but with great balance and proportion and crisp minerally acidity provides posture. Not ready but certainly worth cracking now if you have multiple bottles.

There was both richness and elegance here with polished red, black fruit and chocolaty aromas and flavors. Very Chambolle in character with a long balanced finish. It was again amazing to me how delicious this young Bonnes-Mares was !

Leiden at the end of summer : First young Bonnes Mares I ever had. Very approachable, masculine muscular wine. Nose with red fruit, minerals, some spicyness. Concentrated taste, lots of fruit and tannins but well balanced, pure and clean. Very long finish. This shows that great Burgundies can indeed be enjoyed young.

Stunning nose of lush red earth, fresh red plums and sexy mixed red fruit. On the palate the wine is very elegant, with superb purity and lovely balance that gave the wine a silky mouthfeel, with amazing length and a touch of sweetness on the long, polished finish. Decanted and poured a small sample. Starts off with a slight meaty character and fairly deep red/dark fruit, finish is a bit angular. After a short while it develops some light licorice notes on the nose. Then started on it about two hours later, and followed over another two hours or so. Never had this producer before, but I've been wanting to try it for some time. Very tight and unyielding for the first two hours or so, but when it opened up it was quite nice (seemed to be the trait of the 06's we had this night). Lightly spiced nose showing some mature notes and maybe some stems. This is very elegant and true to the house style, blind you probably would not guess that its a Bonnes Mares as it lacks power and is very light on its feet. Light clean and pure with some lifting acidity on the finish. Not a lot of charm which is surprising for an 07.

2007 vintage

There’s a strong scent of liqueur cherry when first opened but it breathes up to show plenty of savoury character. There’s some blood from a game bird, mushroom, earth and pine needle sap. It is pure and rocky in the mouth with good intensity and a real chewy finish. Whilst quite delicious now, the structural elements have a tight hold over the fruit and it needs a decade to unfurl.
