Excellent. A very floral, high-toned rendition of Brunello. Tart and sweet cherry, roses, herbs, and lavender. Maybe a bit of white pepper too. Good length and freshness on the palate. Both delicate yet intense. Stylistically, I found this quite a bit different than the 2010 Madonna Delle Grazie tasted a few years back. While the MdG was definitely more concentrated and powerful, this wine delivered a prettier and more elegant version of Sangiovese that I tend to prefer. Drink with …

Shy in all respects, especially lack of fruit. Gained from air and was good to food (wild duck) in the end - some 6 hrs after opening. A bit confusing - hold or drink? I guess hold…

First of a case PNP and tasted over 3 hours. This was showing a bit of bricking in color. Nose a bit tight at open, with some roasted fruit. On the palate there was decent red cherry fruit but tannin still quite prominent. With 2.5 hours of air this was more integrated, and the fruit seemed to be more in balance. Next day this had held up, but tannin still pretty prominent. Next time I think a 3 hour decant …

Decanted 1.5 h prior to tasting. Does not give away much on the nose except a weird bitterness. In the mouth, completely flat and lifeless, very limited fruit. Not sure exactly what is going on, but suspect this is one of those minimal cork taints that spoils the wine without coming across as a typical cork taint.

An interesting contrast to the 2015 Cerbaiola from Salvioni Brunello. This is lower alcohol (13.9%) and certainly more approachable.

Decanted 1.5 h prior to tasting. Came from a cold cellar and was still slightly chilled when tasted, which was to the wine’s advantage. Intense tart red fruit including red currants and cherries, citrus, stone, cinnamon, pine tree, and a whiff of solvent. There is a touch of pleasant bitterness, like that of orange peel, nicely contrasting the fruit. A lighter package, but still with a tannic bite at the end. There is loads of energy here. If you don’t …

Bottle 3018 Same characteristics as last time, but this bottle was less balanced and had less fruit but therefore some dominant acidity, so this time it’s just a 93 for me. I paired it with homemade Gnocchi with Gorgonzola cheese to combine it’s burgundy attributes with something creamy. But, well, maybe I am more a Fuligni guy when it comes to bdm.

Decanted 2.5 h prior to tasting. Red and black currants, rosehip, orange peel, flowers, sage, cinnamon, and just a touch of coconut. Crunchy tannins, bright acidity, pure fruit with a spicy twist. Intense flavors but without any heaviness. This has so much vibrancy! Each sip is like the release of energy from a compressed spring. Incredibly charming and playful for a Brunello. There is no need to wait – I would drink this in its current youthful phase. On par …

PnP. Lingonberries, rose hip, tart cherries, sage, clay. Loads of pure red fruit, ending with a spicy twist and a little tannic bite. This has developed nicely and is in a sweet spot at the moment: fresh and energetic, and at the same time silky and harmonious. Very, very pretty. Surely a lighter style for a Brunello, actually reminded me of a Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo Rosé if that makes sense. So open and forward – ridiculously drinkable.

Impressions on day one: The body is on the light side for a BDM, nose and fruit is dominated by ripe sour cherries, then there are some spicy and a few earthy notes behind the fruit, acidity is perfectly balanced and the tannins are ultra fine, which makes the wine vital and alive. Not a heavy hitter but a very, very elegant version of a BDM. Maybe even better in one or two years and maybe then a 95, but …

Delicious, as expected. Like nearly all of the other '12s I've had, the vintage is squarely in its drinking window. Perhaps save the riservas a few more years, but the rest are great now. I've really enjoyed the vintage, which might speak more to my palate than anything else critics have written about the hot growing season. Shoba tasted notes of "cherry Coke"! She said it didn't even taste like wine, which for her is the big fruity Cali cabs.

Tuesday Night Blind Tasting (Bin 75) : Tasted blind. Lovely nose, red sour cherry fruit, feminine style, sweet finish, but with tannic grip. I initially called it Tuscan Sangiovese, but the group consensus was Nebbiolo and that group think swayed me.

Really earthy cherry flavours. Good freshness, 14% alcohol, firm but softening tannins, that support rather than overpower. There is of course tertiary leather here but at this juncture it is not overpowering the fruit. Medium plus weight. Long and complex. Drinking perfectly now, will become more tertiary from here but will last another decade.

PNP from a restaurant list in Montalcino, While a very slight whiff of roasted fruit on the nose this is very good and drinking just fine right now if you are okay with the tannins still showing a bit on the finish. Very good and fully mature bottle, perhaps because the Milan restaurant kept it and other bottles stored at room temp. Full of mushrooms, balsamic, overripe plum, and some leather and tobacco. Not sure how bottles better kept might fair. This nine seemed accelerated in the against process but not spiked by it.

Gorgeous, light footed, airy red fruits, silky sap, weightless like an Italian Ballerina but not lacking power, and when the dance is over, la Donna is here to tell you she's the boss. Very good hedonistic wine, keeps changing in the glass, became more tannic and grippy and towards brown spices after 3 hours of air. Single bottle gift from a friend. Tasted alongside the 2015 Rosso. This has more depth to it than the rosso with darker plum fruit and a lovely chocolate note. Still has good cut and tannins are in a good place. I think this is the first 2015 Brunello I’ve tried despite having gone long on the vintage. Certainly very approachable now.

Gotta say, its superb. Purple brown translucent hue, soft fruity aroma. First Brunello burst is also soft, dark red fruits - cherries, currants blending smoothly into to an earthy but not overpowering finish - tobacco, hint of spice, medium linger. Glad I waited to drink this (bought 5 yrs ago). Its drinking really well!

Il Maronetto Brunello di Montalcino 2015 Day 1 2 - 3 h in carafe, light red color on the border of clear red, restrained aroma. Fruit in the form of red currants, raspberries and rowan berries firm dry tannins and nice high acidity. Somewhat restrained in taste, does not really let go, is proof that it is still young. Second of 2 ‘12s and 4th of the 6 of the triple vertical (‘11, ‘12 and ‘13), a bit under 2 years since the first of these. This was really good then, but has taken an additional step toward excellence. Bright ruby color with dark pink edge. Intense floral nose of rose water and red licorice. On the palate, there are light red berries & leather. Sandy tannins lead into a long finish of earth. Tannins most prominent on gums and cheeks. This was certainly too young, but still enjoyable at this stage. It is intense, but ethereal and a fantastic food companion.

Splash decanted 4 hours. This was pretty consistent throughout the evening although the tannins softened and expanded just a bit after 4 hours (but they were never in the way - this can be enjoyed now but a lot of supporting tannin for the future). PnP notes at first, and then decanted and enjoyed over two nights. Medium to dark garnet. Nose is big and expressive and has tons of tobacco, cherry and very dark spice, wet soil. Tart sun-drenched blackberries, cherry skin, bitter chocolate. Very chewy tannins mid-palate and through the finish here. Wound quite tight. Probably needs 5-10 years; going to decant and keep going. Same bottle as collector and WOTN for me. My experience with Marroneto has been a mixed one. While I simply do not understand the fuzz about Madonna delle Grazie, which from my little tasting experience (06/07/10/12) is one of those a little too hard worked Brunellos lacking elegance, balance and aromatics, I have found the regular Marroneto BdM more interesting but quite inconsistent in quality across vintages. Tasted blind. Light color, excellent sour cherry nose, succulent mouth feel with spices. Really beautiful Sangiovese that was singing tonight. i think that Alessandro Mori from Il Marroneto has been producing some of the best Brunellos in the past 10 years and is now in the absolute top league. Try this bottle and his top cuve Madonna delle Grazie which has received 100 points twice already in 2010 and 2016.
