An oily slightly chemical nose, approaching but not quite kerosene, maybe paraffin. Lemon juice, chalk. I don't love this, hopefully it's just at an awkward age.

Racy and elegant. Still very youthful in terms of colour and very forward. Lovely citrus, lime with some minerals note thrown in. Superb acidity with sharpness and clarity. More important, it has loads of fruits and some beeswax is beginning to emerge. Lovely finish. Too young really but drink now to 2045+.

Lovely wine. At present, it is not drinking as well as the 2017 (which is exceptional). Be interesting to see if this develops further with mote ageing.

A winemaker's selection of the best Sémillon fruit from the oldest, dry-grown estate vineyards. Fermented and aged in stainless steel. 11,5% alcohol. Youthful, medium-deep lime-green color. {screwcap, 11.5%} Some maturity on the nose, with smoke and a hint of honeyed development - but not too much. Colour remains relentlessly youthful though. Even in presence through the medium weight palate, the grassy, citrus-tinged fruit is slowly evolving into a toasty mouthful, with plenty of acidity. No rush to drink, but I feel somehow that most of the development has occurred by now.

By the glass. Perhaps a very shy wine on the nose, simply mineral and floral, which shows all its depth on the palate with a fleshy texture, an impressive limestone minerality and an acidity that gives a dry and long finish. Light yellow, lemon, hint of petrol on the nose, lemon/lime medium to high acidity and a very long finish, excellent with grilled lemon garlic shrimp on grilled artichoke, a favourite white wine, consistently well above average.

Much the same as a year ago. The nose remains its most attractive feature with the classic features of one year ago. On the palate it has become a little broader and with a shorter finish than the more delicate Vat 1’s suggesting that it now fully mature. Good with seafood as always.

Lovely nose of straw, lanolin and a hint of honey. This is pretty well fully matured and I shall be drinking the remaining eight bottles over the next year or two. It is a traditional and fuller Hunter white burgundy style with toast, butter and particularly honey on its long and satisfying palate. A very moorish wine and uniquely fully states its Hunter Semillon character.

A private dinner (Restaurant Aan de Poel **, Amstelveen, NL) : An outstanding Vat 1, an exquisite example of its style, 11.5% ABV. All lemon cream and steel, tightly wound but not austere, seamless, perfect balance, mineral and energetic, drinking well already but with decades of fascinating development ahead. Drink now - 2040.

Not Your Average Varietal (Amy & Scott's) : A small pour at a tasting. This wine seemed to be lacking in character altogether. Rather watery, tart, and a little clipped. Uninteresting.

Hunter Valley Roadtrip 2015 : Toast and lemon, mandarin and a start on some waxy development already. Palate has hints of honey and a good amount of flavour intensity. Starting on the path to developing aged character, and should be a very good wine over the medium term.

Day off in Adelaide #1 (National Wine Centre of Australia, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia) : Pale straw. Very classy nose - tight and slightly dumb today, but with elegant oak handling. On the palate, this is totally unevolved, albiet integrated. Currently quite light and slightly acid on the finish, this is a wine that needs 10 years to fill out and find its depth. 90+

Hunter Valley - 6 Cellar Doors (Hunter Valley) : {screwcap, 11.5%} Well, this was surprisingly advanced for five years old. Toasty enough to raise suspicions of oak usage (none, of course). It’s medium-bodied; has a mix of hay and toast flavours, it’s dry, the acid seems quite reticent. Finishes medium-length. I wasn’t terribly impressed I must say; perhaps this is in a developmental dip of some kind. Not so exciting.

Hunter Valley - 7 Cellar Doors (Pokolbin) : {screwcap, 12%, A$42} Nothing really to add to last September’s more detailed note. Young, surprisingly overt lime and grass aromas. Distinctly acidic palate – almost spritzy – despite the relative richness of the fruit, and its general power. Nearly medium-bodied and with a long finish, its drinkable now and for ten good years.

Tyrrells Private Bins - 2009 reds & 2010 whites (North Ryde RSL, Sydney) : {screwcap, 12%, A$35} The biggest, richest Vat 1 (look at that alcohol!) for many a year. The assertive straw & citrus aromas don't preclude a distinctly steely note from underpinning the nose, but it's still a very fruity rich Vat 1.
