From 375mL. Similar to my last bottles, this is the perfect everyday bordeaux from an everyday format. Every bottle is a pleasure, showing just the right amount of fruit with maturity. An incredible achievement from this vintage. 92

From 375mL. Similar to past halves, really nice and well balanced bordeaux, balancing youthful fruit with some tertiary mature character. Nice fruit, nice cedar, some minerality. This bottle has that lovely youthful fruit which was so attractive in some previous bottles. I think these are good to go, and I'm drinking through all my bottles (a full case!) at a good pace. 91-92

From 375mL. Similar to past bottles, maybe a bit less of that juicy youthful blackberry fruit which I found so attractive in my last half bottle. 90-91

From 375mL. Similar to my previous bottles, this is well balanced bordeaux from a cooler year, this bottle has really lovely youthful blackberry and blackcurrant which is a bit more moderated in previous bottles. 91-92 This doesn’t need air. Pop and pour. A few hours of double decanting and this has lost that lovely primary fruit it had at first. Now 90-91.

From 375mL. Medium-deep ruby, less bricking than expected for its age; aromatic, blackberry, cedar, slight bell pepper, minerals; palate is full-bodied, richness of black fruit with fresh medium-plus acidity, balanced medium alcohol, good maturity; medium length finish. Very nice for the producer and the vintage, ready to go now but will last a few years. This has been a great anytime, anywhere type of wine. 91

From 375mL. Medium-deep ruby, less bricking than expected for its age; medium intensity aromatics, black fruits, cedar, tobacco; medium-plus bodied, tannins well integrated, balanced 13.5% alcohol, integrated black fruits; medium length finish. Nice bordeaux, drinking at peak now and over the next few years. 90-91

From 375mL. Deep ruby, relatively youthful color; medium intensity aromatics, integrated black fruits, cedar, slight tobacco, graphite; palate is full bodied, tannins still present but integrated, medium balanced alcohol, nice combination of black fruit with some maturity; medium finish. 90 when initially opened, 91 with an hour of air. Classical bordeaux, enjoyable Pauillac at maturity, and ready to drink from this format. 90-91

From a magnum. One-hour decant through a screened and aerating funnel. Slight amount of silty sediment in the screen. Wine was clear; dark garnet in the bowl lightening slightly to a brighter garnet rim; no amber but with a small clear halo. After resting, nose of blackberries with stems, cedar and some lead pencil. In the mouth: black fruit and cedar. Very silky on the tongue with a moderate finish of the cedar. Excellent wine. Well-kept magnums will last another …

Good dark fruit, nice maturity. Just kinda lacks a little depth and heft. Otherwise really delicious. A light vintage of this great chateau. Should be on its plateau for 3-5 years then a slow decline.

From 375, decanted off significant sediment. Deep ruby, youthful color for its age; aromatic, graphite, blackberry, some woody cedar; palate is full bodied, full of blackberry fruit, some nice minerality, medium integrated tannins, medium-plus acidity; medium length finish. Very good, but this half bottle isn't quite as strong as my last few. 91-92

The nose was lovely but on the palette, the tannins completely overwhelmed the wine.

From 375mL. Deep ruby, age-appropriate bricking; aromatic, graphite, blackberry, some cedar, slight forest floor, quite complex aromatics; palate is medium-full bodied, blackberry and black fruited, medium tannins still present but approachable, refreshing medium to medium-plus acidity, balanced alcohol (13.5%), flavorful through the midpalate; finish is medium-plus length, nice blend of fruit and some maturity. This is excellent, at an appropriate stage for drinking but has plenty of life left in it, full of character including lovely pencil graphite, great depth …

This '02 grand vin from Chateau Pichon Baron was one of my contributions to our Weekly Wednesday night dinners with the crew. I must say, I read some persuading reviews on how the '02 is showing so I jumped on a bottle when I had the opportunity. I am happy to announce that the reviews were right - this bottle was a SLEEPER and it was lovely. On the nose, pencil lead, cigar box, blackberry, and cedar. On the palate, …

Mature and brilliant. I would say at its peak. Velvety with lots of well integrated tannins and fruit. Deep flavours. Very long finish.

Sadly I did not take any detailed notes, but this is drinking beautifully now - at peak maturity. It won’t get any better but equally I did not think that it was fading at all. My last bottle sadly.

This was surprisingly good. We bought this en premier and have been trying it ever since it landed -- it's our wedding year -- and this (our 8th bottle of 12) was by far the best we have had. Decanted for 2 hours, then back into the bottle to take to dinner. Still very dark and relatively unevolved in color, this had a lovely perfumed "classic Bordeaux" nose. Pichon Baron always has lovely purity of fruit, and in this case …

Looking very young and dark - fresh impression on the nose - black fruits, tobacco, coffee and pepper on the palate. Lacking a little bit of pressure on the palate but very good! Give it a few hours of air! 94 pts.

Classic Bordeaux nose - black fruits, cedar. Lovely mouthfeel, the tannins are fine and well integrated. There’s more black fruit and pencil shavings. Great depth of flavour throughout the palate. In a lovely place, but no rush on these if you have lots.
