Seghesio Family Vineyards Zinfandel Sonoma County

As much as we were concerned that this would be past it's drinking range, I can assure you it was not. Tannins gone, fruit subdued, but very pleasant!

Maintains a deep ruby color-no brick. Red and black fruit on the nose and palate. Near the end of it's drinking interval

Deep ruby color with dark fruit on the nose and palate along with some spice and pepper.

Well aged fruit and good acidity, with mostly silky tannins. Could age until 2025, but why wait?

An excellent zinfandel eventually morphs into very nice mid-weight, middle-aged cabernet. Dark plum and black raspberry with nice grip and a long, slightly drying finish. All said, a delicious wine.

This is still a solid wine. Nice fruit and well balanced. Should be good for a at least another year or two. Much better than the 2009 we recently opened. I'm glad I have another bottle or two left in my cellar.

Regrettably a disappointment with very muted dark red fruit, an abundance or licorice and non-existent finish. Hoping it was just a bad bottle, or perhaps the suspect '11 vintage, since Home Ranch is normally stellar. Bummed.... UPDATED New Years Eve 2020: I take back what I said! This was a very nice, well structured Zin and what we expect from Home Ranch. Consistent bing cherry with licorice notes, well managed acidity and a pleasant, but not lengthy, white pepper finish.

This was fantastic. First bottle of the night. At 7 years old, perfectly integrated. This bested a Seghesio old vine zin from the same vintage.

I again rate this wine much higher than the average. It has an excellent balance of fruit tannin and taste. The taste lingers nicely. Did a side by side with Seghesio Old Vine 2011. Gave the Home Ranch higher marks. I think this would very good for several years. Unfortunately this was my last 2011 - will compare to 2012 next.

Seemed to show the slightest bit of browning, but it doesn’t taste old, it’s probably at peak. Mature notes of piney leafy forest floor, but the cherry aromas are bright and powerful. Nice licorice and cigar box spices on the finish. Excellent for the vintage.

Give the Seghesio Zins a few years and they really come alive. There are still the rugged brambly and primary notes but with time they become balanced and dare I say elegant? That 14.8% ABV is still there and it sure makes you verbose. And handsome, and charming, and witty.....

Wonderful berries and mellow oak. Tannins are just right, and it went very well with a Santa Maria Tri-Tip.

I remember enjoying other vintages more. This was attractive, pretty full-bodied and assertive but missing some intensity too - might just be faded a bit with age. Not really my thing, but decent value.

Did a bottle of the 2011 Cortina in the afternoon with friends and the 2011 Home Ranch in the evening with a little Cortina for side by side. Cortina was very pleasant, good balance, but too fruity on the front end. Loved the Home Ranch less fruity, strong flavor more earth less cherry. Gave Cortina 90 and Home Ranch 93

Dark purple hue. Blueberry nose, touch of white pepper, spice. Dark fruit, soft oak, white pepper on the palate. Full bodied, long finish. Drinking perfectly. Paired excellently with Chinese food.

Rich nose of warm apple, raspberry, bramble and pie spice. Solidly structured palate of brambles, berries and fresh berry jam. This is a great wine with years ahead. As good as zin gets.

Beautiful dark color. Dark fruits, with blackberry and just a hint of blueberry and vanilla. Medium to long finish. Just a bit too much alcohol but tonight's Jambalaya was a good opponent and I'll call it a draw

38th Annual Zinfandel Retrospective - the 2011s (R&D's) : Florals and showy black fruit. Pepper, bramble and black raspberry on the palate. Good finish.

Absolutely loved this wine. In fact, not sure if I've had a zinfandel that was so memorable/delicious. Dark berry and spicy nose. Mature grapes, smooth, well structured/balanced, dark fruit, little spice but not too much. Drink up-- not sure how this thing can improve. BTW, Seghesio has been putting out stellar product for years-- seems like it is always on the down low.

Beautiful, balanced and complex Zin. Blackberry and raspberry on the nose, with a cool, mineral-earthy element at work in both the nose and palate,as well as a good tannic backbone. Tasted side by side with the 2012 Old Vine, this was slightly less ripe, but overall more elegant and complex. Excellent.

Beautiful muted berry and spice nose. Gobs of fruit with a long, lingering finish. But I wouldn't sit on this much longer.

This wine is consistently my favorite Seghesio year after year. Had with Thanksgiving dinner and it was just lovely. Did not take too long to open and had lush, juicy fruit, well balanced acidity and tannins, long velvet finish, with a touch of earthiness and a hint of eucalyptus.

Very dark color and a lot on the nose as well. Great berry flavors that seem to run the gamut, as well as chocolate notes. Mouthfeel is super creamy, very good acidity and there's great length. Top notch Zin.
