No Theme Great Wine Sunday : Very dark opaque purple, dark cassis, tar, and rocks on the nose. Palate follows showing a little bit of development from the black fruit toward a more plummy character. A bit shorter than you would expect on the finish. Group Tied for 5th, my 4th for reds

Big, slightly sweet fruit, but enough going on that it never feels over the top (although it's definitely walking the line). Not an everyday wine....but a great wine on those days you're in the mood. Not sure if there's any point in holding further as I don't see it improving. Pop and enjoy!

I haven't had one of these in at least 5 years but broke out with holiday grilling for the MSGR crew to contrast / compare to the cabs. Sill black ink in color with a borderline unctuous mouthfeel. Extracted primary black fruit but well-balance through the mid palate and finish of licorice and crushed stone. I'd love to revisit this at age 30 and suspect it will still be going strong.

This was great! Deep, smokey, savory black fruits, but a surprising amount of acidity (especially considering the vintage) keeps this fairly light on its feet (for PS standards). Really enjoyed this and happy to have one left in the cellar.

Quite good. After being given a few hours of air, lot to enjoy. Actually maybe the best bottle yet. It's a shame I drank so many before it really was hitting it's stride.

One-hour decant through a screened and aerating funnel. Some fine sediment in the screen. During decant, blackberry and blueberry aromas emanated forth. Wine was clear; inky purple from bowl to rim with a moderate clear halo. After resting, nose had become more complex: the blueberries remained supplemented by nuts and vanilla. I should note that the nose continued to develop throughout the meal. In addition to the aforementioned aromas, lilac and caramel became quite prominent. In the mouth: most of …

Deep ruby red color. Blackberries, blueberries, licorice and chocolate in the nose with hints of espresso, tobacco, earthiness and spice. Lots of black fruits in the flavor, blackberries and plums with spice and licorice. Very well balanced with rich concentrated fruit, nice texture and acidity, complex, and a long very smooth finish. 93/94.

Pitch dark in the glass. Very expressive nose with sweet strawberries, raspberries, and vanilla. Great acidity, lots of red fruits on the palate that show depth and maturity but with lots of freshness. Some secondary notes of dried flowers, medium tannins; long and lingering ending with cedar wood and a hint of white pepper. My first Turley - it did not disappoint. This is complex, expressive, and extremely delicious. Petite Syrah is often an overlooked grape, but this wine shows …

I was looking for something rich, dense and satisfying to drink on a cold, snowy winter night. This one certainly fit the bill and delivered the goods. Decanted for 2 1/2 hours prior to evaluation Extremely dark purple color; blackberry nose Incredibly concentrated fruit notes of plum and currant qlong with grape hard candy. Secondary notes of tobacco and roast meat. Tannins are present but unobtrusive. Plush mouthfeel with a healthy dose of mouthwatering acidity that cuts through the dense …

As solid a bottling of anything I’ve had from Turley’s Hayne releases. Lavender, smoke and concentrated purple grape, viscous and mouth coating with leather and a bit of acid bite on the finish. I’d say prime window.

This was excellent! Still plenty of fruit but it's much more integrated now compared to a few years ago. I typically prefer even more age on my PS but this was drinking really well and smack-dab in the zone. No risk of it falling apart anytime soon - drink now and over the next 5 or so years to appreciate the energy/fruit.

Decanted for about an hour. Still quite dark. The overall impression of the wine is very balance, very rich and delicious. Flavour profile leans to dark fruit with a solid finish yet retains lots of freshness for such an old wine. Turley PS Hayne Vyd is one of my favourite wines.

Perfectly preserved. Dark fruits, bit of tannic acidity. Plums, blackberry, currant. Floats across palate but so rich and concentrated...then acidity freshens the long finish. These are brilliant wines and perfect for grilled steaks or meaty entrees.

Erik's. Dark and brooding. Good tannins and heft; not cabernet or syrah-like, but that kind of body. Finally dawned on us: had to be Petite Sirah. Showed well.

Dinner with the W's and B's (Fiorentini in Rutherford, NJ) : This wine was not aired out before arriving at the restaurant, so it only saw about 40 minutes of slo-ox before serving. While this wine probably has many more years of life ahead, it showed its age at this serving. Lots of earth, spice and dark fruits on both the nose and the palate. The acidity was just shy of balancing the heavy and slightly gritty palate. Air out, …

At first seemed monolithic, dark sweet fruit without much depth - almost artificial in flavor, reminded me of grape bubble gum, which was puzzling to find in this 19 year old wine; however, with a few hours in the decanter, the nose brought tertiary aromas to the party, and the flavor profile also gained some depth, although the fruit did retain a pruny quality to it. Hard to gauge which way this is going. Maybe my bottles have been cooked …

Big fruit, dark purple, hints of licorice and coffee, savory and sweet, incredibly concentrated, but somehow fresh and no feeling of being over done. Reminded me of a hypothetical blend of a paso Robles Syrah and an Aussie Shiraz. Bravo!

I was super into this; not mega-complex wine, but a killer example of one that successfully allows power and elegance to work together, rather than canceling each other out. Amazingly, despite the 15.4% ABV, this felt complete and deliberate, a super-rich wine with no semblance of jammy tones, dead fruit, flabby structure, or anything like that. The price is very high around $80-90, but still solid QPR. If I had blinded this, I would likely guess a slightly aged Barossa …

First Unmasked Dinner with Steve & Lucie (Our Place) : Decanted for 2 1/2 hours, with lots of sediment. The color was an opaque purple. The nose yielded a bowl of dark red, blue and black fruits. The medium plus bodied palate showed this same bowl of dark red, blue and black fruits, along with some earth notes. The acidity was juicy, but balancing, given all the fruit. Another wonderful bottle of Turley Petite Syrah, smack dab in the middle …

Inky purple with no browning. Red jalapeno, fruit compote and a bit of heat on the nose. Brambly with medium acid makes this a mouth waterer. Long finish with a bit of drying dusty tannin remaining. At its best I've had, though no signs this is past prime either. Evidently I've been drinking these too early.

As every Turley Petite Sirah, this bottle shines with its ultra pure and intense black cassis and blackberry fruit - quite singular in its style and the clear highlight here. Thanks to almost 20 years of age, this is has a beautiful balance and other aromas are shining through. Still, it‘s not the most complex wine but I guess younger, these wines might be too tannic and highly monolithic. I would love to drink one or the other bottle of …

Extremely dark soul, very unique. Dark blackberry, some herbs, but distinctly different from a cab. Nice tertiary aromas. Leather, olives. It's a big wine, deep and long. I liked the 2008 better when I had it in 2018, because it was such a unique experience at Zion National Park. But this is also great.

Excellent wine with plenty of life left. (Decades even?) Complex, though not explosive, nose of cigar, potting soil, barbecue spices, blueberries, and blackberries. Thick on the palate with decent acidic brightness and light but gritty tannins. Long finish given the relatively low acidity.

A hit at the table alongside of grilled tri-tip. Two decades in the bottle have smoothed the edges and opened ‘er up wonderfully. Lavender and hibiscus blossom (thanks, Matt!) in the nose, transitioning to blackberries, apricot pit and thyme on the palate. A soft yet lusty finish with notes of asphalt, licorice and toasty oak. In its sweet spot right now. Drink up. Outstanding.

Extreme power, depth and intensity - yes ... but, to me the beauty of a great Petite is when delicacy and finesse approaches the brute strength. The primary palate impression to me was white flowers. Exceptional now and for many years. Wish I had more.
