Ansel Wines Syrah

Not bad for just over $20, but not great, either. Kind of has an awkward, slightly ashy/smoky tone, especially on the nose, that didn't play well with the rest of the components. Occasionally I got some good fruit, gentle plum and dark raspberry, some ever-so-slightly savory pepper also. Good acidity to provide lift and the tannins aren't too coarse, but the alcohol pokes out a bit, a little prickly/hot. I found their Pinot Noir dramatically better. Maybe something was lost …
