French but no Burgundy/Bordeaux theme : My contribution. Everyone guessed northern Rhone for this, but not sure if I understood why. Didn’t have any Loire greenness despite the weaker vintage, but was built more like a traditional Bordeaux from a more classic vintage with some leafy herbal notes. Pleasurable and drinking at peak now.

Bell pepper, green notes, a lot of soil. You can see the class of this wine, but it is simply reduced by the vintage.

On first sip before food, this was quite full for Chinon with savoury ivy tinged fruit, quite strong acidity and still marked tannins. However, after a mouthful of marbled Hereford beef and peppery Mediterranean vegetables, the fruit became more gracious and the tannins riper seeming and just right to cope with the food. This is a classy wine with a pairing which softens the rather austere 2004 style. Very good.

This wine has a severity which is not typical of Chinon or even of Dioterie itself, but is typical of the vintage. My previous bottle was opened about 5 years ago and, while the aromas have opened up somewhat since then, the wine's austere character is unchanged. Palate was medium+ bodied, showing savoury fruit, earthy minerals, fresh tangy and leathery acidity encased in still marked tannic structure. Blind, I would take this for a robust bougeois left bank claret from …

Leather, tobacco and a nice sweetness. Perfect match with the Easter lamp. Very nice bottle of well aged Chinon Cab Franc. Perfect!

After opening some green notes, herbal, with green bell pepper notes, meaty, some mushrooms with wet earth, not really clean. With air it’s getting better: dark morello fruit, tobacco, still some bell pepper notes, earth, pretty good for a 2004.

Pretty slightly bricking ruby. Deep, complex and compelling aromas of dirt, sexy waxy fruits, bakers chocolate and Turkish coffee. Great penetrating palate, staying quite light, but with very impressive length. Funky but held together with its bright yet barely present dark fruit core. In a very nice spot right now. This has a lot of character and it is a clear rebuy for me.

Translucent crimson color. Nose dominated by earthy aromas, with smells of spicy red pepper sauce, savory scents of braised meat, and a smoky hint of charred wood. There is also the subtle but noticeable smell of green bell peppers, which I am told is characteristic of this varietal in this appellation. The palate is very high-toned and floral, with tart red fruit. Throughout the mouth this has firm structure, coming off as slightly green at the margins. Pairing well with …

This is a really nice wine that I wish I had more of to drink now. It is in the zone and very ready. Typical Cab Franc.

This was a rather austere, lean and structured Chinon in keeping with other Loire reds I have had from '04. Colour a still quite pristine dark red. Nose very shy at first but opening somewhat to savoury fruit infused with discreet damp leather. Palate medium bodied, quite small at first, but expanding with air and greater warmth, showing more savoury fruit, earthy minerals, fresh tangy and leathery acidity encased in still marked tannic structure. Future pleasure will depend on whether …

Dyp rød med lilla kant. Jordtoner og mørke bær, bringebær, pepper og kryddertoner. Rik, fyldig, godt integrert og framstår kompleks med flere lag og ung frukt. En virkelig god vin!

Just a gorgeous Chinon, with all its very old vine depth and suaveness. This took a little bit to open up but once it did it was all deep, dark Cab Franc fruit flecked with gravel, leaves, earth, with the fruit complexion shading ever more toward savory pipe tobacco tones. Utterly seductive. Still very young with lots of tannins; this has years to go before peak.

drinking a bit austere...good deal of green and tannins on the finish. hints of fruit, but right now, the greenies are up front and center. touch thin in the middle.

This wine was never too fruity to begin with, I actually like the faded out character it was starting to show but the mineral flavor remained strong, not bad though but disproportionate. The problem is the bell pepper flavor is huge on this. I know Loire cab franc often has bell pepper and I am OK with it if there are other things going on and balancing it but this is at the forefront.

This is a great wine to have as part of a tasting when you need a Cabernet Franc based wine in the flight. Lots of raspberry on the nose but als green notes and firm tannins. Not the best vintage for this wine but I still enjoy it very much

Nice example of Chinon. Classic aromas of herb and smoked meats, and flavors to match with just enough red and black berry fruit to carry the meatiness. 100% Cab Franc. Drinkable now, a couple of years in the cellar won't hurt. 2007-2012.

This smells kind of stinky, like other French Cabernet Franc I have encountered. Perhaps you could say earthy and floral, emphasis on earthy. The palate is mineral/stone, with plum fruit, maybe a touch grapey. A little acidity and tannin show mostly in the finish with some lingering fruit. This Chinon is fairly mild. Overall this is rather dry with fruit and a little sweetness showing at times. I would say this is medium bodied yet leaning towards light. The color …

Chicago Wine Geeks do the Loire Valley (Bill's Place - Lakeview, IL) : Ruby in color with an awkward nose that at times was pleasant with red fruit and tobacco but utlimately was overridden by a funky medicinal note. Palate is lean and not giving.

$18 full retail. Light color. On the nose, light, fresh aromas of dried cherries and an herbal / cedar note. On the palate, rather light weight, with noticeable acidity, dusty red fruit and a light herbal note. A fresh, honest, no-nonsense red that, admittedly, might not be for everyone due to its slightly pronounced acidity and its herbaceous element... Wish it were more like $12...

Curious nose - hedgerows and furniture polish with some cherry fruit. Rather fine and very elegant on the palate. Light, but with a lovely fragrant character. Very Good Indeed.
