bottle difficult to rate. the nose was nice, candied lemon, a touch of mint, chalk, baked apple. there is a sign of slight oxidation which shows the age of the bottle but is not overwhelming. the palate is a bit all over the place, medium body, good freshness and high acidity. the bottle was enjoyed over an hour or so but did not really improve. based on this bottle only, I would say it past its optimum drinking window. 2 hour double decant and this showed lovely aromas full of lychee, mineral and citrus extract that led to a rich, ripe, oily textured similarly flavored palate that showed good tension and a clean finish.

As I rather imagined beautifully made balanced clean, silky but not that developed. The acidity is such that it will last 10-20 years. Impressive but some way off best.

Smoke, mix of steel and chalk, grapefruit, lemon peel - not quite tropical but quite ripe on the nose. Densely packed fruit on the attack. This is a structured and serious Chardonnay. Toasty oak is quite prominent and some herbal notes on the finish. Not sure what to make of this beyond not recommend to open now - it’s interesting and complex but in an awkward place.

Young, ripe and rich with great acidity and minerality. Broad orchard fruit profile with flavors of pineapple, grapefruit, and dried citrus. Rich forward palate with excellent acidity and plush core. Needs 2-4 years but is fairly forward and big today. Upside from here

2019 vintage

Exotic sensation with dried tropical extract, peach and vanilla. Palate is rich and ripe. Good volume for its appellation. It should hit its optimal drinking window in 3-4 years.

Very pale yellow. Aroma of oak and flowers. Delicious nutty flavour. Lime, lemon meringue, touch of smoke. Very dry.

2018 vintage

Young and bursting with rich orchard fruit that shows early nuances of mineral and honey but for the moment is still fairly primary with plenty of proportional balance to age. Upside from here and peak drinking starts in 2-5 years.

2019 vintage

so good... beat out by a nose by the 2019 J. Colin P/M "Trezin", but this had really lift / acidity / brightness but also some real depth... these two characteristics often come on solo... but this bottle (like the Trezin interestingly) had heaps of both (depth and lift)... feels like this could be a long term ager with all the acid (if no premox)... this is a rebuy for sure

Dark color gave me cause for concern to start, but that quickly faded once smelled/ tasted. Apple and pear with anise and earth, with a faint hint of stone fruit. Good depth, freshness clearly fading. Time to drink up.

A bit marked by smoky reduction but not in a bad way. However whether you like or not that reductive style may impact how much you love this. Quite expansive and complex at this level so actually was pretty happy with it

Had that in Fahr Restaurant, Aargau, Switzerland, very nice Place with small but good wine list and excellent food! N. Elegant, complex, green and spicy , typical Montrachet. Also toast, butter, but only wonderful built in nuances. T. Even rounder, astonishing sweetness/acid balance (very good), long finish again with spices and bitter components like grapefruit. Madame liked it also a lot, stood very well with all courses.

Still wonderfully rich, especially for the vintage, accompanied by plenty of sweet spice. While not mature or too advanced, there are earth notes emerging while the brightness is clearly starting to decline. Probably right at its peak now.

A good bottle, showing a dominant minerality that shot through the lovely pear and citrus fruit. Well balanced and composed. Not as fresh and lively as I might have wished for, but very good wine.

2008 vintage

Not a good showing. On the nose I found odd aromas, nothing to indicate a flawed wine, but just a lot of reduction for a wine of this type. It blew off but the wine never showed all that much aromatically, and on the palate either. I have to think that this is not a representative bottle.

Rather quiet and under-developed tonight. Expected more but was rather quiet and lacking character. Confusing wine as it was all correct but just didn't show much.

A sound bottle, but feeling a touch tired. Was probably fresher a year or so ago and doesn't feel like there's any real upside from here. Nonetheless, what is here is good- minerality, lemon w/ spice notes. Prominent acid on the palate.

Apple and pear with some background mint and licorice. Very good overall balance with good weight and length. Best now through the next 3-5 years.

PnP fr 750ml. HOLD! This showed very primary: quite rich, a bit linear, still too young! 90-91 today, much upside in remaining patient.

Badly oxidized. Left on the counter to revisit an hour later and it was more oxidized. Probably slightly past its "normal" peak drinking window, but this was extreme.

Opened a half hour prior. Medium yellow. Struck match bouquet. Round attack with good acidity but this is on the way down now with much less fruit in evidence than my last bottles. Balance is still good but this is a shadow of its former self.

I had low expectations given problems with so many 1996s, but no problems to be found here. Still showing plenty of apple, modest spice, but very good energy and minerality. Very good length. Color was still bright, fruit so fresh that if served blind I would have thought this 10 years younger.

Starting to Golden. Seems to have just hit maturity. Power and grace combined. Should be drinking well and improving for a long while.

Flickinger Tasting at The Casino (Chicago, IL) : A good whiff of white peach. The palate has a very rich texture, but balanced with lots of acidity, and despite the fat, this still comes off as quite austere.

2011 vintage

Popped and poured. Followed over 2 hours. Medium yellow. Full bouquet showing honeyed white flower and orchard fruit notes. Palate is a bit less impressive but only slightly - there is a bit of disjointedness to the balance and acidity is a bit prominent. But this is a full featured, enjoyable villages with complexity and charm. May improve over another 2-3 years.

Liked this wine a lot tonight, with both orchard & stone fruit, mint and sweet spice hints, followed by impressive minerality and acidity. Not a powerhouse, but a very good 1er to drink between now and 2020. Just not quite as good as it was when younger.

Knightsbridge 2011 Burgundy Tasting and Sale (Northbrook, IL) : Tasting, brief note. This was a personal favorite of the Niellon 1ers tasted at the domaine last summer and it didn't disappoint today. Lots of apple and pear with some lemon peel hints at the end. Good density, energy and length, very good overall for its level.

Funky, earthy nose that pulls back to reveal baked pear and minerals. In the mouth, vibrant on the front end, with tart apple and baked pear fruit marrying nicely although standing in contrast to one another. Good acidity, then a turn to earth and spice on the tasty finish. A-

Day Five in Burgundy: Bonneau du Martray, Clos de Tart, Faiveley, Niellon (Cote d'Or) : Tasting at domaine. Apple and pear aromas, hint of lemon. slightly floral, good spice aromas as well. Bigger mineral elements, lots of energy particularly on finish. Moderate length. Well balanced. Very good, 90-91 point potential.

I was worried about premox, but this bottle proved to be very nice. It started out tight and grapefruity, but continued to open up with time and air. A nice balance of minerality and slightly exotic fruits. Drank the bottle over 2 nights and it was still tasty on night #2.

4th Saturday group "uptown" tasting (Rich & Dana's) : Deep straw yellow color. Fantastic bouquet of lemon oil, toast, smoke, stone and minerals with a subtle wool-like, cottony undertone. Flavors of lemon, pear, stone and minerals. Good underlying acidity with a long, lingering finish with terrific minerality. Guessed young Corton Charlemagne. Drink now-2020+.

Seemed, like good price point for village wine from reputed top producer but made little impression on me. A modest white Burg priced about double what its drinks like.

Very acidic on opening. Needed 30 min air. forward citrus fruits, oak, smoke. Delicious
