Youthful color, but the structure is mostly resolved, leaving tender, medium-to-light bodied and still quite primary dark fruit, without so much complexity. Ripe but not heavy, this is representative of the vintage, and still needs a few more years to hopefully develop some secondary, more interesting character.

Lafarge and d'Angerville study (Chicago, IL) : Served double blind. Clearly pinot (though I thought the Lafarge-Vial was too) on the nose and distinctly different from the previous wine. This was much darker and brooding, and showed lots of black fruit hidden under some serious structure. Quite savoury on the palate as well, I thought this was younger than it actually was; possibly a 2015 based on the structure.

needed several hours of air to come together. very nice once it did. red and black cherries, spice, some florals, crushed rocks, a a touch of leather. I see this going at least another 15 years

Hugely floral nose, with a touch of soap even, on opening. This is losing its tannic structure now and is accessible but still primary. Good, a wine of delicacy, a little simple and short right now, but with room to develop. Interested to see where this goes. Edit: with a few more hours of air this filled out and showed a more black-fruited character, nice.

Still young (and kinda wished I had held off) but very good stuff. Earthy, savory, beef accents the black cherry fruit. Serious grip with medium acidity, young but lovely. Concentrated black cherry fruit is laced with earth, pepper, rose petals, tar, smashed rocks. Complexity and elegance build and by last sip (some eight hours open), it was glorious. If I have another bottle I'd try to hold it for five years.

Mild red fruit on the nose, as well as a light hint of florals. I love the crunchy red cherries here. The palate has some very restrained red fruit, a nice bit of ripeness, and lovely red-tinted acidity. This is quite sweet, but there's a good bit of acid and tannin still. Silky and reasonably drinkable at this point, but certainly this can benefit with more time.

Decanted just before dinner. Nose displays some funk, dark berries and a hint of red fruit. Earthy. Medium plus body by Burg standards. Palate seemed a bit closed; could use another year or three in the cellar or a longer decant. Interesting wine with some intruiging complexity, could use a bit more time.

Pale in colour. Quite reticent on the nose, though the aromas that come through are crisp and delicate: ripe cherries and plums, roses, and perhaps even a bit of tar (no, this is not nebbiolo to the best of my knowledge). The palate is also very delicate, and a certain light-handedness in winemaking shines through here. The flavours are muted, and I've a sense that this has entered its shut down phase. Colour: Medium plus ruby, clear Nose: medium intensity, clean, developing. Biscuit, cedar, earthy - very earthy in fact, raspberry compote, sweet spices, slight smoked bacon Mouth: medium plus acid, medium silky tannin, medium plus body the wine is mouth filling and savoury with very sight bitterness. There is cherry and berry, medium plus body, medium flavour intensity, medium alcohol. Nice but not that nice.

Weygandt Selections - Annual Portfolio Tasting (Astor Place - New York, NY) : Deeper floral notes than the entry level Volnay. This has better acidity though with a beautiful earthen component that is vacant all too often in 2009 Burgundies.
