Came across this cellar orphan while doing some rearranging in the cellar. Opened at a friends open house gathering since it was almost past its' prime. Oh man this was surprisingly fresh, and full of dark red fruit. No hard edges here, and perfectly balanced. Cork was in incredible condition, and knew it could be special. Newton didn't disappoint anyone and all thought it was excellent. Would say it could easily have gone another 3-4 years in the bottle.

short decant. Great cabernet nose. Medium body. Some persistent tannin still. Not excitingly complex but interesting overall. Not sure if time will bring anything new though should soften tannins. Drink or hold

No rating. I was pleasantly surprised upon opening that it wasn’t noticeably corked; quite the contrary, it actually appeared to have some life left in it. However, after about 30 minutes all traces of life completely left and what was left in the bottle was little more than watered down grape juice.

Aerated and decanted for an hour. Continued to open for another half hour. Lots of dark fruit, especially cherry, strong tannin. Very nice but not overly complex.

Really nice bottle that was drinking very well. Held up well over the years.

Most of these unfortunate 2011 Napa Cabs I've had are approximately the same - lacking the concentration and depth they should have, but overall drinking very nicely. This is on the good side. 14.5%, $60.

Came across a bit green and under ripe. Some dark red fruit flavors on the palate with a touch of oak but otherwise, not much to show for it. A bit thin on the palate as well. I am sure this is a result of the poor 2011 vintage but I was not a fan of this wine, especially for the price.

A really nice Cab but not as much power and full bodiedness as some the Napa Cabs I love. Definitely a nice rich ruby color and most enjoyable but a little softer on the palate with less noticeable notes.

By far my best of six, no TCA, mature berry flavors with hints of well integrated oak. Almost makes up for prior flawed bottles.

I see the other notes on being past maturity but I think it is quite the contrary. I purchased the 1991 on auction several months ago and it was amazing - although I would not say this is on its way to being what that was, I think it will be a much better in two to three years.

More muted than the last two bottles. This was at a peak, if not past. Unsure of prior storage.

Red currant and licorice on the nose, this felt tired tonight. I would drink soon. Flavors of blueberry, saddle leather, cracked pepper with a bit of flaccidity from pH that seemed high and bitter but moderate tannin. Drink now!

Currant and smoke in the nose, currant, earth and cracked pepper flavors. Maybe just a hint of TCA that showed up on day 2 after the fruit had faded just a bit. It could be just a bit of old barrel note. Time to pull the bandaid off these bottles, drink NOW.

Left to breathe in the bottle for 2 hours. Slightly restrined on the nose with blueberry, cassis and hints of smoke and oak. Very smooth and rich on the palate with nice balance. Did not pick up any heat from this wine. Good dark fruit intensity which transitions very well through the mid palate and on through the medium length finish. Smooth tannins on the back end. Showing nice secondaries of coffee, smoke and integrated oak. More of an old …

Deep red center, red rim with some signs of age. Sweet dark cherries and cassis, mature meaty notes, overtones of tapenade. Rich mouth feel, aged cassis flavours and fruity black cherries, very good smoky middle palette, some coffee and bell pepper, olives and herbs, good length with balancing acid and tannins. Outstanding Cabernet in a very Bordeaux style, a shock I'm sure if you're expecting a Napa fruit bomb. This is ready to drink now and won't improve, but will …

This seemed to be pretty pedestrian. I wonder if this wine will ever hit its stride. It had a pleasing purple berry nose with raspberry, coal and molasses on the palate. There was a level of unpleasant heat in the finish with rough-hewn tannins and some oak influences.

Smoky, earthy nose with nice blueberry overtones. Moderate weight mouthfeel, well integrated tannins. Dark blueberry, prune and hints of oak. Very good and I think it is ready to go. I do not expect more than 10-12 years on this wine, with good storage.

Dusty, well balanced red fruit nose. Watery mouth feel. Tons of thanksgiving/christmas spices are almost too overpowering for the fruit. A little sweet as it sits on the tongue. Very long finish with lots of spices and fruits and a mint/eucalyptus note. Interesting wine, food would help.

Popped and poured. Medium garnet, slight bricking on the rim. Initially, the nose showed a very distinct, earthy note (slight touch or brett perhaps?). Medium body. The palate matched the nose and showed little fruit, seemingly over the hill. However, after 2+ hours aeration in bottle this Cabernet completely transformed, and while the nose still showed a touch of the barnyard aromas it had now opened to show notes of fruit. On the palate this change was even more profound, …

Very atypical for Newton, orange and considerably aged (a bit oxidized?). Much more earth tones than fruit. Light body overall. I’ve always like Newton wines, but this not something I’ll try to pick up in the future.

Newton Portfolio (Brown Jug) : Surprisingly liked the Merlot better (how can this be?) Leathery nose with spice box and cedar tones. Dried currants, black cherries, and beastly tannins. A little restrained right now with the tannins overwhelming the subtle spices, oak, and black fruits. Needs time, as this bottling usually does, particularly in this vintage. 84+

Newton Tasting : This is the only Newton Red I was impressed with, although the price point is still a little forbidding. Good nose, with big red fruits promising a big wine. Made in more of a classic style. While there's plenty of oak, there's none of that milkshake feel of many napa cabs. Good acidity, with the tannins letting you know you're drinking cab. The fruit tends to be a part of the whole experience, rather then dominating it. …

California Cabernet Master Seminar/Lecture by Serafin Alvarado (Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago) : Napa Cab Lecture - Sefarin Alvarado Brownish garnett. Moderate legs. Nose of stone fruit. Chocolate, raspberry, clove. Light hints of perfume. After hints of herbs from the cooler climate @ Newton winery in Yountville. Mint, bell pepper. Full body in the palate with flavors of tobacco. High in tannins and acidity, yet still balanced. Medium - Long finish. Better than the Mondavi Napa Cab head to …

Opened not decanted. Well it looks like I don't even read my own notes and follow my own advice as I popped my last one. Subtle nose of citrus + berry; a slightly oaky, peppery attack with a dry chocolately finish. Good, but would I buy again? Probably not. I will finish the bottle tomorrow and make some final notes. Day 2: the wine just got better. So why would I not buy again? I think I'm getting palate fatique …
