Elegance with a touch of honeysuckle and peach notes. Excellent!

Drank at Rancho Valencia. We suspected the first bottle was oxidized. Opened a second - better, but still undrinkable. Faint hints of pear and apple in the nose but absolutely nothing left on the palate. Bitter aftertaste. This wine is clearly dead and should’ve been consumed a decade ago. Drink now, or skip a step and just discard any remaining bottles.

3rd Friday Group: Uptown Brown Bag (R&D’s) : Double blind. Medium yellow color with a lovely bouquet of tangerine (Indigene?), lemon, pear and honeysuckle. Full-bodied showing lemon, pear, apricot pit and a slight bit of toasted qualities…there’s oak, but nicely framed against the fruit. That tangerine element is my tell for a particular wine, and especially so when it’s coming from this cellar. I correctly called this as Cuvée Indigene, but would have thought a couple of years younger. Drinking …

Another incredible Chardonnay from Peter Michael. Flavors are restrained but intense, primarily a ripe starfruit with some meyer lemon, straw and white flowers. Soft French oak and just enough acid to keep it in balance. Medium+ body and a very, very long finish.

Drinking at the right time. Deep straw color. Secondary characteristics are apparent. Stone fruit such as peach and apricot are predominant. Fairly long finish. Just a perfect time to drink this wine. Paired with Jean George’s fennel apple salad and gently poached king salmon.

Friday Night Uptown Brown Bagger (R&D's) : Double blind. Deep straw yellow color. A lovely bouquet featuring pear, vanilla crème, apple, lemon and tangerine. Rich and full, with flavors of pear, vanilla, clove, basil and quince with a citrusy element in the finish. Just delightful- my favorite of the warm ups. Starting to drink very well but I suspect its very best is still a couple of years away. 94+ pts. (R&D)

July 4th Mondo Event (Atlanta, GA) : Tasted blind. This was intended to be an intermezzo palate cleanser. However, it was so big and thick, I don't think it played the role as intended. My wife would love this as it is a massive tropical fruit California Chardonnay bomb. The only wine of the evening that I had to pour some of it into the spit bucket. It is literally a liquid meal in a glass.

Not my favorite bottle. Tasted green and without the richness, minerality or depth of flavor. Possibly an off bottle? Unlike other Indigenes I have had.

Deep mature color. Notes of baked orchard fruit, marshmallow and citrus. Wonderful mature fruit on the palate lingering on the finish. May have been better a couple of years ago, but still delivers. Excellent.

A wonderful chard with notes of apricot, honeysuckle, citrus, minerals, perfectly balanced with great mouthfeel and long finish. Hard to top Cuvee Indigene! Paired beautifully with steamed king crab.

Deep mature color, with notes of pear, fig and hazelnut. Apple, melon, fig and quince on the palate. Develops floral and mineral tones with air. There’s a hint of citrus that emerges as well. Changes in the glass with every swirl; wonderful complexity and depth.

Popped and poured. Terrific nose of white flowers, Granny Smith apples and autumn leaves. The wine is full bodied, lush and impressively layered. Medium golden it is fully mature and has started it decline. Flavors of ripe apple, peach, marmalade and autumn leaves come through into a long classy finish. This is excellent but probably was best drunk a couple years earlier in my opinion.

This lively and layered Chardonnay is drinking beautifully right now, with an energy and viscosity that are both tasty and impressive. Light yellow in color and medium in body, the wine offers enticing aromas of lemon peel, brioche, poached pear, and salt water, with a hint of nutmeg. Flavors of mandarin orange, almond, grapefruit, and vanillin, with a finish that is both creamy and lifted. 14.5% alcohol. Drink in next few years.

Fully mature. Light to medium golden. Sweet apple and nuts on the nose. The palate is full bodied and delicious with flavors of apple, pear, butter toast and minerals with a long finish. This is very good chard. My only grudge is the new oak treatment on this mask some of the complexity it might otherwise have.

Recently had an experience that was new for me. Took a bottle to dinner. The waiter opened and poured a taste. I smelled something off but the first taste seemed OK. I set the glass down and let it sit for 10 minutes. The smell was much less obvious and it still tasted good. I asked the sommelier to taste and smell and he came to the same conclusion--a little TCA present, but not enough apparently to make it undrinkable. …

Achim's Magnum Tasting 2016 (Berens am Kai 1 star Restaurant) : From magnum Drank blindly, nose was typical for a Californian Chardonnay, Vanilleä, ripebaken bananas, oak well integrated, not overtoasted, powerful body maybe a hint too much alcohol, some Ron Zacapa finish, nice acidity, good with food, 93-94

From magnum. I thought we were out of PM when we last opened an 06 CI mag and it was oxidized, but I guess not. Hidden in a shipper, I dug this out last week. At least this bottle is sound. But both Jane and I are quickly riding off into the CaliChard sunset. However, this beats the pants off the last couple of Aubert chards we've been tortured by. I want to reiterate that we enjoyed many great PM …

Drinking absolutely beautifully at this point. Almost a magical wine from Sir Peter. The less costly chards- mon plaisir, belle cote, carriere, are good enough- and then this goes them all one better. It's a lot of money for an American chard, but it's worth it, once a year or so.

New World Dinner at the Capital Grille Tysons (Capital Grille, Tysons, VA) : Ripe yellow fruits, apple, sweet spices, mineral and a hint of heat. Excellent concentration, limestone, very rich fruit and bright acidity. Although impressive and balanced, I don’t find freshness and precision.

Double Blind at Mike O's - Embarrassing!; 6/1/2012-6/2/2012 (Home of Mike and Sandra O.) : This was pretty cold when I tasted and non-blind. Nose was a littly shy showing a waxy character and ripe golden fruit. Palate was massively concentrated for a chard, plenty of tropical fruit and soft mouthcoating feel but heavy and viscous. Finish was long lasting, buttery. Big and blowsy, hard to imagine drinking something like this with food as there seems to be little acidity. …

Perhaps I am being a little harsh in my score, but this wine was unexciting, and at this price point it should be exciting. It is fine, nicely balanced. Not a lot of acidity, not a huge amount of fruit. Nothing wrong with this, but not compelling.

Slightly cloudy (unfined and unfiltered) muted yellow in color. Nose of flowers and soft lemony notes. Vey expressive. Palate is filled with vanilla, pear, apple, hazelnut, and a subdued minerality (far less than the Belle Cote or Carriere) which is nice. Smooth, creamy finish. I could drink this wine all day (if it wasn't so damned expensive). Have to save my other two bottles and see how they age. (4+14+18+9)
