1988 Leroy x Meo : 00040/1176, American label with long wax. Coffee, mushroom, some soy sauce flavor, sharp cherry fruit, Vosne spice, feeling older than it should be, if still true to terroir with the blossom of spice. 93

1540/6720, blind. Faint lychee and hawthorn aromatics classic to earlier Leroy. Vosne spice even fainter, thought more NSG village, lean, high acidity, much different from the aromatic 88 SLB a few months ago. 93

Purchased three six packs at the Domaine in the mid-90's while barrel tasting the huge 93's. Followed these since then, and as with other 88's-were tough to go ga-ga over for about 20 years, and Lalou's favorite 1er cru in her vast stable! Thankfully open for business now as light ruby colour with minimal peripheral bricking and ripe Chelan cherry nose. Explosive sundried cranberry palate with classic Vosne spices on a long leathery finish. Wow! Best now - 2035

Drank alongside the 88 Roumier Ruchottes. More spice and higher/sweeter toned notes with darker fruits compared to the Roumier. Excellent acidity and drinking quite youthfully. Sweeter fruit and more structured on the palate compared to the Roumier. I slightly preferred the nose on the Leroy but the palate on the Roumier. Both great wines that need another 5-10 years. 93+

Upon opening this showed sweet, higher toned red fruit. With time, a darker fruit profile and more Vosne spice emerged. Great acidity. Could use 10 more years.

A very brief whiff of bottle funk on the sommelier's tasting pour. Beautiful color with suggestion of bricking. With very little air a rich and concentrated Leroy nose with transparent Vosne spice and dark fruit jump from the glass. Coats every corner of the mouth--a wine of incredible finesse. Started off with a musky nose with some leroy stems and hints of cedar wood. It was a bit lean in the beginning. With time and air, it had gained more weight. The nose was very floral yet funky. Although it had no secondary note, the wine is now in its peak drinking window with medium tannins and a long finish

Drank over 3 hours. Initially, this was seriously funky with only faint hints of red fruit peaking through on the nose. After 30 minutes the funk subsided and became a pleasantly complex detail. The palate was red fruit, excellent spice, lot of mushroom and earth along with some floral notes. Pure yet complex. Long finish. Towards the end, a bit of a sour note appeared on the finish.

Deep ruby red color, initially quite closed on the nose but after an hour opened right up. Intense dark fruit nose with hints of spice and earth. Initially still youthful and somewhat tannic but after an hour this wine opened to reveal that wonderful combination of great energy and elegance that for me defines great Burgundy. Popped and poured. Wonderfully spiced nose with dark fruit, dense mushroom, and cured meats. The palate was truly wonderful with an elegance that's rarely encountered with soft violet florals, cured meats, mushroom broth and warm spices. This was better with air, but was one of the finer examples of pinot I've ever had.

Paired the 88 and 89. The crowd consensus was the 89, which is deeper and richer, and was great. But the 88 was soft and delicate, and I felt showed really, really well.

Burgundy Dinner with Friends (Bryn Mawr Country Club, IL) : Darker cranberry and cherry notes with some dried floral. Cinnamon and clove. Some nice earth tones as well. Very pretty berry and cherry notes on the palate as well with the same brown spice notes all throughout. Medium body and finish.

Stunning nose of spice, berry fruit, black cherry and all sorts of earthen tones. Palate was young but had great concentration and texture. Silky texture but with great crunch depth.
