At CdV w/ J Breslin, K Milles and JP. Excellent level of enjoyment, not too much tannin by any stretch. Elegant, red cherry, tar, a little flint emerging on the palate. Really dreamy and totally dialed in Barbie w/o being totally resolved.

30 min decant. Very dry - loads of dark fruit, anise, and game. Definitely needs a big steak.

7 Days in Italy II; 2/17/2019-2/23/2019 : A dry vintage, lots of spice showing on the palate, but I’m immediately distracted by the quality of the fruit expression. It calls for my focus.

2018 Visit to Marchesi di Grésy with Jeffrey Chilcott (Martinenga, Barbaresco) : Served blind by Jeffrey. An interesting, developed, complex nose of Campari, liquorice, aniseed and dark fruit. Somewhat medicinal (as a positive descriptor). That evolved character carried through to the palate, expressed as dried leaf, tobacco and game meat nuances. Fleshy, generous fruit and seamless. Very good. “The Martinenga presently drinking the best”, noted Jeffrey.

Annual Piemonte Trip - 2018 Edition; 10/12/2018-10/14/2018 (Piemonte, Italy) : We are starting to like younger and richer Barbaresci ( not super modern stuff though) more and more and this 2009 Martinenga was a very pretty little number. We decanted it for a good half an hour and had it along its cousin the 2009 Gaiun (Papies 92) and this showed very well. Nice ripe fruit, well balanced and silky on the tannin side. Very good wine to have now …

My thoughts very similar to HowardNz's notes. The nose is the stand out for me. Plenty of smokey, tar and rose notes. On the palate it's more straight-forward, tannin there but a fair way back in the mix. Matched with a meal it stood up to the occasion, not a drinker in its own right.

Horrible - looked like Kool Aid and tasted watered down . Poured down the drain . Steer clear of this .

Dinner with Jeffrey and Alberto at the Osteria Dei Sognatori, Alba : Jeff introduced the 2009 as "drinking the best of the Marchesi di Grésy wines at the moment". Great aromatics of luxuriant, ripe dark fruit and florals. Linear on palate. Sleek, satiny dark fruit, cassis and liquorice. Soft, refined tannins. A wine to drink sooner rather than later, I'd think.

Cool Wine Tasting Group - Nebbiolo (Elgin South Africa) : (Tasted Blind) It's a light+ ruby colour with an orange rim. It has intense notes, again a hint of VA, but this time, more savoury notes take over (cola tonic and smoke) as spicy oak and berry fruits arrive. The palate has a sinewy texture and a more four-square structure, lacking the subtlety of Barolo with a slightly protruding alcohol. Flavours of tree bark, brown liquorice, wood smoke, cola, and …

So pretty. Forward and less grippy than the 08, but not overly ripe and really very well-balanced with no disjointed or unevenly ripened fruit that I could detect.

The di Gresy Family and Martinenga Vineyard date back to 1797. But Martinenga goes WAY back. 56 acres of south-facing soil composed of blue marl at 920 ft elevation. 30 acres of Nebbiolo. very nuanced and elegant aromas. also a darker cherry nuance than the 2013 Langhe Nebbiolo suggests. more depth of aroma. color at the edge gets a little orange. has more concentration too. palate shows some licorice too, a little orange rind.

I really enjoyed the velvety mouth feel as well as the understated fruit, pronounced earth, and very pleasant soft tannin which were in the background. The overall impact of the wine on the palate completely belied the very light color in the glass, beautiful and bright ruby color. It was a pleasure to drink.

Mild effervescence, bright, pronounced sour note, somewhat interesting character but perhaps too young.
