Beautiful barely translucent garnet-purple. Nose of deep violets, lavender, blackberry, black pepper, char, and rock quarry. Layers of pure blackberry, dark plum, smoky char, bacon fat, pepper, and crushed rock on the deliciously wild palate. Freshening acidity and smoothed tannin. Long finish of echoing spicy plum, blackberry, rock, and pepper. Just beautiful.

Double decanted for sediment then drunk over a few hours. On the nose, roasted rare game, bacon fat, white pepper, violets, olive tapenade, savory herbs, and a mix of red and dark syrah fruit. Expansive, yet only mid weighted on the palate. This has sap and breadth with terrific texture, with the tannins nearly fully resolved leaving a texturally supple, but by no means soft or flabby, frame. This has intensity with grace. Savory, more than fruit driven on the …

Decanted for about 30 minutes and followed for 3 hours. Darker garnet. Nose of damp cellar, plum notes, lavender, black pepper. Layers of blackberry, plum, roasted meaty elements, and peppery spice on the palate. Thin mid-palate filled in over the evening such that last sips were best. Very nice showing which would have been better if I had decanted longer.

Darker, almost opaque garnet hue. Nose of black pepper, smoke, black plum, damp cellar. Well-delineated layers of plum, brambles, beef blood, licorice, and black pepper on the palate. Ample acidity and mildly filed off tannin. Long finish of mulberry, blackberry, smoky currant, and stony grip. Oh so satisfying, a complete and beautifully integrated wine.

Double decanted in the Am for sediment, then drunk over several hours that evening. On the nose, blood, bacon fat, roasted game, violets, iodine, and white pepper. Beautiful dark fruit, rare game, blood orange, and more savory pepper, iodine, and singed earth on the palate. Call it what you will, but it has a sense of poise and depth.. Power and grace. A beautiful, harmonious wine that performed well above my expectations. I felt we drank this at its absolute …

Over the hill. Thin and devoid of fruit and vibrant acidity, although some said it perked up after a few hours.

Opened by Otis. Not decanted. 3rd time I have had this wine. This wine is fading but was still enjoyable. More earthy than fruity and their was much less fruit showing than in the previous bottles. 88 points.

I wish I had more, this was an outstanding wine in this vintage. The amount of fruit left is amazing for a 18 years old wine. Really delicious. The previous bottle was slightly better thanks to a longer decanting, so dont be afraid to decant two hours, the wine is strong enough not to loose anything

delish with a grilled steak, the smoke and leather features were stronger than the liquified cherry cola. ready to go now.

Really delicious mature red cherry, herb, spice, grilled meat flavors. Smooth and well balanced. Saved a glass for next day and it was still beautiful.

Soft, elegant, sweet fruit with leather, not especially long, maybe a tad tired, but I like. B+

Deep ruby with slight bricking. Beautifully mature aromas of red berries, cedarwood, herbs and spices. Soft, resolved tannins , excellent fruit persistence and long length. Lovely, autumnal bottle.

Great bottle. Perfectly mature. Very elegant and balanced notes of pepper and cassis. Very smooth on the palate. A joy to follow as it gradually opened more and more up during the dinner.

Cote Rotie 2001 and Older (Jamet, Ogier, and Others) : Opened right before it was served, it starts out very tight and bashful, with hints of leather and red fruit, and quite a bit of acid and not much else. It opened up enough with air for me to suspect that it should either be decanted well in advance of service, or just allowed to slumber a little longer.

Gerin from mid-90s on seems somewhat modernista/spoofy, but if this saw any new oak it’s well integrated. Leather and a touch of barnyard, this comes across as a bit old school. Blackberry, olives, bacon. Tannins resolved, this is just a bit soft otherwise I’d love. B

Northern Rhone Dinner; 10/29/2011-11/1/2011 (Naperville, Illinois) : Otis brought this wine. It was the 2nd time I have had it. Last time was in 2002 and it showed slightly better. This had a pretty nose and a smooth texture. Lower tannic structure than the other wines in the blind tasting. Notes of plum and forest floor. Starting to show its age. No votes. 89 points

Leather, cherry, charcoal, nice balance. Still going strong, but has probably peaked.

très agréable, une belle côte rôtie. Une vraie buvabilité, fluide, manquant peut-être un poil de concentration. Le vin était prêt à boire.

Bright black cherry fruit with high-toned acidity. Some peppery edges. lacking a bit of body weight in the middle, but quite dynamic and lively on the attack and finish. Drink now through 2015.

Not undrinkable, but had a distinct cork taint preventing the more charming characteristics from getting full attention.

This was a very good bottle, much better than the other two. No significant brett or reduction, nice out of the bottle, throwing a substantial but fine sediment and fully clarified (no microbial instability). The nose is wet saddle, cigar box, mint but very little jammy fruit, if any at all. The nose seemed to bely just a small hint of brett which may have, in fact, been up front on this in the palate, but it was so low …

Took to Core tasting organized by G3 in Pasadena. Showed well from the start, with plenty of fruit but in that restrained style that is so old world. Good structure and acidity. This is still a young 'un. Great with the food and on its own. Not fatiguing at all.
