A delightful drink even if way past its window. Great color and nose and the acid pops after a bit of air - let the wine linger on the tongue for full punch

2007 vintage

Has developed nicely over the past several years (drank previous bottle in 2021). Still has a bit too much sour cherry, especially upon opening, but that starts to smooth out after 30-60 minutes. Dark purple color. Cigar box and violet on nose. Creamy milk chocolate flavor in the mid-palate, with subtle baking spice. Tart fruit kicks in on the finish. This should have 3-5 pretty good years left.

Very decent Tempranillo. 30 min decant plus another 30 min in glass seemed to open up very nicely. Fantastic red rose and red berry bouquet. On the palate dark fruit, mild mineral and muted tannins contrasting the bouquet. Blended and mellowed further in second hour improving the long smooth finish. Packed a mild wallop as well. Dark ruby. The nose was very promising. Real Duerro nose of sweet oak, plum and cigar box. Really rich and inviting. In the mouth it left me a little surprised. Maybe it needs more time. Pnp, better after some air. Black cherry, plum, fig, some vanilla. Nice fruit, but there was a note of stewed fruit, and at 14.5% ABV, I wanted a bit more freshness.

Excellent vin mature, carafer 1h. Belles arômes de cerises chêne fruits noirs. En bouche on retrouve du chêne, moka, anis choco noir. A boire maintenant.

2011 vintage

Still drinking well. This is round, with dark fruit flavors that are nicely integrated with a mineral tartness and tannins that pack a pleasant supportive punch. Bargain selection if you can still find it.

Vanilla and red fruit, a bit of cigar box. Soft tannins and very moderate acidity. No signs of getting too old. Will surely drink fine again in another five years.

This Castilla y León is a blend of 75% Tempranillo, 12% CS, 9% Syrah, 3% Merlot and 1% PV: Medium to full body, plum, sweet vanilla from the well integrated oak, black currant, licorice, fig, tar, fresh acidic note, smooth long finish.

2017 vintage

This has softened compared to my previous bottles a couple of years ago. Pleasant nose, with good quality oak, vanilla, cherry, sweet spice, earth and tobacco. The acidity I have come to appreciate in Tempranillo on the plate, ripe dark fruit, soft tannins, followed by a nice finish. Better than previous bottles and drinking well now.

Exceeded expectations. Deep, rich black fruit with good concentration. Turns a little flat on the finish, revealing a bit of an acid deficit. But a solid wine. Continues to hold up well.

A quaffer wine, lush, juicy and bold with balanced tannins and acidity. Made from a blend of 75% Tempranillo, 11% CS, 11% Syrah and 3% Merlot, aged for 12 months in FR & US oak barrels, 75% new. Deep ruby colour. Medium+ intensity aroma of plums, leather, cherries, earth, hint of cedar. Medium+ body, bold and powerful, juicy and round structure, medium acidity, medium+ tannins.

PnP. Really a fine Tempranillo showing ripe fruit and character. Drink now- 2027. Has evolved faster than I expected two years ago.

2016 vintage

Nice one!! Medium purple in colour, Initially oak is nice but a bit dominant, an hour of decant helps to balance the flavours. Pretty nice on the nose already. Sweet notes of plum and vanilla. Palate then blackberry, bit of plum and nicely integrated oaky notes of vanilla and bit of coconut. Finish is absolutely harmonious and long. Drink nor by 2028. can even be enjoyed below 16 degrees, try it out. Incredible value for the money! :)

This stuff is silky smooth with nicely integrated savory and dark cherry elements. Vanilla/oak also noticeable. Like a Rioja with "stuffing" (except it isn't because its from Castilla Y Leon and as I recently learned from spending time in the area, "We're better than Rioja" - a refrain I heard constantly!)

Very smooth straight out of the bottle. Lovely tannins, mild oak, dark fruits. Paired beautifully with sausage and peppers and also, on nite 2, with steak and spinach and mushrooms with yuzu sauce.

So good, PNP. Lots of vanilla and black fruit, earthy oaky midpalate, hints of tannins and acid in the finish. Great value. Still very smooth and delicious on day 2.

Great value $27 Spanish red 2016 Abadia Retuerta Selección Especial Sardon de Duero. 75% Tempranillo, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot. Mid-dark garnet, viscous (14.5 alc.); peppery, black fruit, ripe grape and cedar nose; low-mid acids; mid tannins; softening; good fruit; long red and black fruit, slightly hot finish. w/beef. 16.5-17 UC Davis scale, 91-92 other scales.

Mild dark, dank aroma with a little wood and no fruit. Rather austere on the palate, with little flavor. Not much to like or dislike with this wine.

Charming blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah. The nose exudes aromas of black cherry, plum and red fruit with toasted oak notes. Savoury and expressive palate, ripe and velvety tannins together with juicy acidity give support to the brambles flavours coalesced with notes of coffee and pepper. Long and persistent finish.

This blend shows up as very dark purple in the glass. On the nose I get blackberry reduction, charred oak, black tea and blueberries. The palate is sublime- dark fruits intertwined with lush oak, bramble, black tea and fine grained tannins. The mid palate is very satisfying. Gobs of blackberry, lashings of wood, crunchy tannins and juicy acidity all come together. The wine finishes semi dry with good mouthfeel and a medium length serving of those delicious, ripe fruits. From Alma, La Santa, Lanzarote. Ripe blackcurrant fruited nose, touch of mocha. Medium/full bodied, ripe dark fruits, soft tannins, subdued acidity, finishes a little flat. Attractive in an obvious kind of way but ultimately a bit dull.

Moved at least a notch since last time. Fat, chocolate, but not jammy. Elegant wine. Should get to 92 in 3-4 years. Hard to beat for the QPR. Waldhaus in Sils Dinner.

2017 Abadia Retuerta Selección Especial was a decent example of Tempranillo-based blend on the riper end of the spectrum. The developing Sardon de Duero wine was clear and deep ruby in colour without any sediments. It was decanted for two hours to open up the aromatics, and then transferred back into the bottle. Medium purple, opaque. Aromas: dark berries, pineapple and coconut and acetone, leather and tobacco, hints of fig and licorice. Endlessly interesting nose! Tastes like raisin, dark fruit, a little black tea and mint and licorice, and bitter almond near the end. Low acidity. Still a lot of tannins, but smooth and rounded. Long finish. Very good.

2000 vintage

On fruit tones alone, my conditioned palate would guess wonderful 10-yr old cabernet sauvignon all day long, later supported by color and density. Dense black cherry fruit and pleasant, drying astringency would guide my blind palate into oblivion. High-fat beef (ranging from NY strip to 85/15 Angus beef burgers) are perfect, as with similarly structured pasta/sauce combos.
