Past its prime? Probably. But it still stood up well with food. Opened with a plummy odd nose (the tell-tale sign) with nothing but flat tertiary flavors. But then the weirdness (and plumminess) went away, and the tertiary flavors became spicy and layered. This is over four hours in the bottle and glass. By the end, I was sipping it with Tillamook sharp cheddar slices and having a grand ole time.

Really nice. Solid acid with a little fruit and dark spices (I know that's not a thing but it's my impression anyway). Long finish.

nice but a bit thin. Seems a bit past its prime. Some nice beautiful nose and good acid to stand up to food.

Beautiful rich, complex herbed notes, cardamon, cinnamon, with light liquorice hint, light dry dusty tannins, good deep length, intoxicating subtle flavours of dark black berry and cherry fruits.

Smooth though a bit light in taste: limited body. Likely result of its age.

Interesting blend (35% Nebbiolo, 35%, Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon). Dark clear garnet. Nose of earth, licorice, vanilla, and blackberry. Medium palate of blackberry, black cherry, plum, & licorice. Good length. Pleasant acidity. Delightful minerality. Youthful tannins. Mild oak. Decent wine, nothing special.

Thought this might be past prime…wrong…still a great wine with great mellow fruit and a clean finish and a delicate nose. Will look in the dusty corners of some local wine shops to snatch up any excess inventory for a nice daily drinker. Think it will stay stong for 3-4 more years.

I drank most of these way too early - this is coming into its own now. Not a heavy wine - great fruit - I didn't find it flabby. This still has a lot of life ahead of it.

This is a decent wine that comes across at first as an unharmonious blend, with young Cabernet structural characteristics overshadowing other elements of the wine. Top-heavy, with round buttery notes of melted licorice, asphalt, dark chocolate, lilac, and fermented cherry. The palate is almost overwhelmingly flabby; clearly this wine is too young. Its deep, blackish-red character has a tarriness that seems like a hybrid of a McLaren Vale Shiraz and a Napa Cab. The wine improved gradually throughout the evening; …

Good deep ruby with no signs of bricking. Somewhat shy nose of nebbiolo cherry and flowers. Very good grip with slight tannins and a wonderfully medium body with plenty of cherry, cedar, and some spice. Very nice and very food friendly.

Drank with my wife for our anniversary. This bottle was really singing! cedar, tobacco, and cherries on the nose and in the mouth. Great mouthfeel with coating tannins and just the right amount of acidity. I don't think that this is going anywhere any time soon, but I can't imagine that it can get much better than this. Awesome introduction to the wines of Gaja!

This is improving with age. Really nice mix of Cab, nebbiolo, and merlot. The nebbiolo really does stand out making this taste much more like a piedmont wine than you might expect from the percentage of nebbiolo. Gobs of fruit, and nice finish. Will likely continue to improve with time.

Half bottle. Autumnal Nebbiolo, crisp Cabernet, ripe and elegant, great with venison and beef.

Gaja tasting at Garagiste : This isn't Gaja-lite. Big and Meaty. Addition of Merlot and Cab seem to give this some approachabilty now. A Gaja QPR?!

Garagiste 2001 Gaja Tasting (Garagiste Warehouse, Seattle, WA) : First wine of the afternoon. Expected deep garnet in color. Nose of plum. Red and a bit of black fruits on the palate with firm tannins on the finish. Nice and the best deal of the bunch.

Gaja Winemaker's Dinner (Four Seasons, NYC) : Nearly equal parts Nebbiolo, Merlot, and Cab. Robust. Smoke, dark fruit, licorice, saddle leather, raspberry, meaty. Well-balanced, drinking well. A very nice table wine, would buy more.
