Popped, breathed in bottle 60 minutes, consumed over next two hours. I've been collecting Potazzine based on Kerin O'Keefe's reviews as my palate aligns very well with hers, but this is the first bottle of the various vintages in my cellar. Aromatic profile of cherry and tobacco, with pleasant balsamic and vanilla accents. Fine tannins and acidity supporting a long finish of cherry and nutmeg spice. Continued to pick up steam over the course of the night. Seems to be in a good drinking window now.

* Decanted 3.5 hours before serving. Light ruby color, displaying very earthy tones on the nose, olives, thyme and forest floor. In the mouth, initially firm tannins but rounded out beautifully throughout the evening and continued to improve in the glass with every sip - medium bodied, velvety, soft and seductive. 6/6, very good cork, decanted and immediately served. Medium garnet core, pale garnet/mahogany rim. The nose is fragrant with sour red cherries, notes of balsam and brown spice. Developed but still quite fresh. Medium/full bodied, sour red cherry, spice, touch of soil and leather, resolved tannins, lovely vibrant acids carrying a good length harmonious finish. Fully mature, excellent. Don’t see any upside to holding these, even for bottles in relatively good shape like this one - drink up.

Purchased at the winery in 2012. Slow ox for 90 min and consumed over 4hrs. Nose of balsamic, stewed plum, cherry and red liquorice. Lots of secondary and some tertiary notes on the palate - leather, spices, raisin, ripe red plum. Medium tannin, medium acidity. Unlike other notes i wouldn’t say this is overly advanced compared to other 2007 brunello. Just reflects a hot vintage that probably isn’t built for the long haul. For me this is probably at peak …

It is clearly - at least this bottle - beginning to show its age. Mature notes of plum, cherries, spices and tobacco. It still has enough fruit to balance its tannins but not for a long time further in my view.

3/6, cork 80% soaked, decanted 1/2 hr. Medium/deep garnet core, pale garnet rim. Gently spicy, aromatic nose, sour red cherry, spice, florals. Medium bodied, composed and harmonious with red cherry fruit, a touch of savour, vibrant acidity, fine, pretty much resolved tannin, good length spicy finish. Excellent, in the classic mould and now drinking well.

OK brunello. Disappointed as it showed much older than its age. Very smooth edges now, and on trajectory to end of its road. A little hot on aftertaste. This needs drinking soon

2007 vintage

A lot different than last tasting. At opening it had almost a hint of VA with clear bottle development. Not at all as fresh as last tasting (February 2021). Very complex, though, but better drinking on day 2-3. Aromas of dark cherries, barnyard, forest floor, eucalyptus, leather, and sweet tobacco. Nicely integrated tannins and a quite long finish. Drink last year or hold for another 5-7 years.

Light garnet. Nose of cherry & herbs. Light/medium body. Fresh acidity and well integrated tannins that still have a gentle grippiness. Balanced, elegant and complex. Nice long finish. Initially PnP but opened up with a decant.

Tuscan wines of North London (Terra Rossa) : Viola Gorelli told me a couple of weeks ago that she really likes this vintage, and I can see why! She also commented that, due to the estate's altitude, they tend to do well in warmer vintages. The wine was ripe-ish with sufficient acidity, giving and approachable, with the flavour of summer pudding... all in all, wonderfully hedonistic.

This was very good, mature, well balanced and complex. It just was missing the "wow" of the '07 La Serena BdM that preceded it.

1/6, good cork. Medium/deep garnet core, pale garnet rim. Aromatic, quite developed, spice, leather, touch of fig, some underlying bright red fruit. Touch of liquorice. Medium/full bodied, elegant with gently spicy red fruit, touch of soil and leather, firm but fine tannins, fresh acidity, very good length finish. This is lovely - classic Brunello - drinking well, no hurry.

Popped and poured. This is a medium red wine with some rusty aspects at the rim and some mild sediment toward the end of the bottle. On the nose, I get cherry, rosehips, balsam, and iron pan. The mouth is nicely balanced, with some medium fruit and clear acidic freshness. The finish is marked by dark cherries and a mouth-watering sensation. Paired beautifully with fennel seasoned pork chop, this has raspberry, red cherries and menthol on the nose, with a really smooth palate. Melted tannin, meaty, aniseed notes and lively acidity along with mature notes. This is probably at its peak though I regret having no more of this powerful, age-worthy and rewarding brunello. Unfortunately, it’s price has caught up with its quality.

Tasting at Potazzine (Tenuta le Potazzine) : Very pale garnet. Nose is light, savoury, lightly spicy. a touch of leather. Medium bodied, fresh and elegant, red fruit, very fine tannins, good length finish. On the light side but lovely, almost Burgundian.

Drank from a 375ml as part of a 2012 BdM tasting - 3 hours of slo-ox. Wow. Very expressive nose with deep, concentrated black purple fruit with a backing of garrigue, spices, vanilla, and jus (is that weird?). The pallet is massive, yet elegant. This was not your typical ‘14 Brunello, showing a beautiful bouquet of dark earth, undergrowth and crushed stone up front, giving way to dusty spices and dried florals. On the palate, I found silky-soft textures with caressing red fruits, hints of licorice and red inner florals, along with a wonderful balance of vibrant acidity. The finish was long and spicy, lingering on dried cherry with a hint of sweet-and-savory spice.

Fully mature, this has developed a lot in the last year or so, with leather, broken down leaves and meaty notes. Still fresh however, and has good acidity and complex femininity. That said, I wouldn’t leave these an awful lot longer. This is ready to drink now. 93

Wine Dinner in Ngaio (Trelissick Crescent, Ngaio, Wellington, New Zealand) : Old school Brunello, with savage levels of tannin (that do match really well with food!). Beautiful pure cherry and earthy aromas. Great focus to the rustic palate. I really like this wine, as it does feel more old-fashioned. I imagine this will age really well, with the tannins transforming with time.

2/6, decanted 1 hour. Deep garnet. Nose, a touch reticent, shows red fruit, mineral, floral hints. Palate is medium bodied, fresh with spicy red-toned fruit, vibrant acidity, elegant, tannins are fine but still firm and perhaps rein in the finish a touch still, suggesting this has a bit more to give. Lovely though.
