Random wines tried during service (Oinoscent) : Sampled from a 6lt bottle, gift from Dimitris Skouras, 2hr in a decanter Powerful aromas, developed, dried red fruit, sweet spices, earthy, cinnamon, whole spice, sour cherry notes, clove, some leather notes. Palate shows developed profile, dissolved tannins, coffee notes, med to high acidity, again sour cherry notes, med body, feels like short-ish finish. Maybe needs more time to open up? -/- Tasted again later on, it opened up with more fruit

"I drank all the Giz" (Chicago, IL) : Served double blind. One of the surprises of the tasting; I quite liked this despite the plentiful coffee ground notes here. Generously proportioned with fruit, this is showing some moderate aged notes and plenty of tannins too. Couldn't place this blind, but I did enjoy it.

Tannins and fully integrated oak. Restraint , with red plum, cherry and currant. It’s like an austere 1997 left bank, with slight Brett to give complexity. Tannins could use more time to resolve but the fruit is at the cusp of old age

Random wines tasted during service (Oinoscent) : Tasted after 50 minutes, wine not decanted, tasted next to Chateau Ampuis The wine shows pale cherry color In the nose the wine showed almost the same spicy, savoury profile as the Ampuis but after some time the oak goes away and you are left with overripe red fruit, plums, prunes, figs, currants and maraschino sourness. In the palate, the wine feels going downhill, bitter notes, coffee, chocolate, short finish with dissolved tannins. …

Skouras Megas Oenos Vertical Tasting (Skouras Winery) : Harvest: 20/09, Yield: 31hl/ha, production: 29.000 btl, Alc:12.4% The wine was decanted and poured back in the bottle. This is the only time that barrels from Chateau d’Ampuis were used. The wine shows a deeper color that only starts to fade The wine shows higher intensity in the nose, very fragrant, spicy, ethereal, elegant, cinnamon candy, ripe to dried red currant in the back, a few earthy notes and gamey notes, beautifully …

The wine shows high intensity, a thick core of ripe red and black fruit, earthier spices, the oak is in balance with the fruit, dried and fresh herbs. In the palate the wine is very elegant, a few coffee and smoke notes, a bucket of tannins and acidity, long finish with an alcohol burn …

Very impressive deep and rich on the color. The nose and palate both show lots of new, probably not French, oak that is still evident today almost 8 years off the vine and at least 6 in the bottle. Trying to imagine this as a Bordeaux with a larger than typical percentage of Petit Verdot. At this time the tannins are mature and ready but must have been bruising at youth. Definitely shows some "Old World" musty graphite. The fruit …

Having tasted this wine numerous times in the past and in different vintages, I have to say that this was a dissapointing experience. Clearly overmature nose with stewed dark and red fruit, some spice coffee and thats it. The stewed fruit continues in the mouth, not much tannin left and too much acid makes the whole imbalanced. Pitty; hope the place I bought it is to blame.

Drink Greek with Vinography (Souvla Restaurant, SF) : Dark garnet in the glass, this wine has a rustic, attractive nose of artisan green olives, mushroom, and dark savory fruits. In the mouth it is a little hot with a solid core of fruit, savory notes, and a medium-length finish. Delicious.

Decant 1 hour. No tannin but the acidity is profound. Muted fruit. Can only be appreciated with food.

Dark garnet red, black fruit on the nose, reminiscent of a good Tuscan red. On palate robust with good tannin/acidity balance. went well with the Greek food we had.

A blend of 80% Aghiorghitiko from 31 to 67 year old vines and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon aged 35 years, with about 30 hl/ha yield. Aged for 20 months in French oak, four of which on its lees plus 6 months in the bottle before release. Medium ruby in colour displaying rubbery, tarry notes and leather initially opening up in time as chocolate, licorice and blackberry jam aromas take over. Round and supple with a sweet, long but slightly flabby finish.

Euro-Themed Lunch - Greek Wines (Donato Enoteca, Redwood City, CA) : Little bit offending on the nose, but that burnt off with time in the glass. Plums. Good, weird palate.

Deep ruby with a dense and seductive nose slightly closed. Black fruit, sweet spice, earthy aromas with evident oak. Refreshing on palate with a solid structure and thick tannins that need time to mellow and integrate fully. Very well made and promising. Fine-grained tannins contribute to an elegant mouthfeel.

A rather atypical but very interesting Megas Oenos. Very dark ruby. Very expressive but surprising (to those who follow this wine vintage after vintage) nose with ripe blackberries, cassis, dark fig, sweet spice and oak. Much sweeter and darker fruit than usual, but very attractive indeed. Medium-bodied with firm tannins, ripe fruit and balancing acidity. Long aftertaste. Still too primary but with a lot of potential.

Greek Wine Birthday Tasting Dinner (Mezes Restaurant, San Francisco, California) : Dark red violet color; reduction initially on nose that blows off, earthy, berry, mineral nose; tight, currant, berry palate, with depth, quite lovely and reminiscent of a good Right Bank Bordeaux; medium-plus finish
