The 2009 Opus One is more than a wine; it’s an experience, a symphony of moments that merge past, present, and the untamed passions of the soul. This Napa Valley classic is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, a creation of indulgence and melody that resonates deeply with those who embrace life to its fullest. The wine opens with an overture of complexity and depth. The nose reveals a rich bouquet of blackberry, cassis, and dark cherry, …

Very ripe, great extraction. More evolved than I would expect. Notes of mulberry and blackberry compote, along with fruit cake and spice. There are also tertiary notes of leather. Full bodied. Moderate acidity, tannins quite soft but still provides support. Long and complex. My recommendation is to drink now and over the next small number of years.

Initially I thought this was going to be down the drain. Nose was really off putting, cork soft and crumbling, smelled of earth and tea. After time in decanter it improved and tasting revealed a huge flavors of black and red fruits, eucalyptus, some mint, spices including some nutmeg. It was very big and complex. The nose never equaled the palate, but was a fun wine.

Decanted briefly. Mature and balanced. Curious to see where it goes from here.

Decanted two hours. Showing some maturity with the body tending more toward oaky leather beneath well-balanced acid and cassis. I think these wines are designed to peak around the 10-year mark but sometimes they age very well.

Muted nose upon opening. Evolved into rich dark fruit. Fruit continues on the palate, with noticeable acidity and grippy tannins that softened after decanting about an hour.

Decanted briefly, best after two hours. Balanced, dense Opus with the usual crossover of old and new worlds: delicious but subdued fruit, nuanced earth and acid. A wonderful wine for those who like this style. Probably not improving from here but no rush.

Exoticism Extremely powerful nose of spices, pepper and cardamom. The mouth is on the same register, a contained power but which is fully expressed, with aromas of cocoa, vanilla and these spices which dominate. The wine is textured with a nice grain. Nice balance on a warm and opulent juice but which remains digestible. Grand finale on eucalyptus. Excellent Opus

This was a magnum bottle that we purchased recently at Opus One in Oakville (and we suggest a winery visit if you ever have the chance!) for a special evening with friends. Stunning experience for the evening - a silky smooth Cab, just perfect. Absolutely no decanting needed.

Surprisingly in this flight of tasting, the 2009 was the one that needed food to go with it. The tannins are somewhat overwhelming (was it a cold year?) but matched by luscious fruits and a beautifully long aftertaste. I would keep this one closed for now.

Dark ruby in color with a reddish rim. Nice nose of black currants, blackberries, black plums, cedar, licorice, chocolates, vanilla, earth, light vinaigrette, tobacco leaf, herbs, eucalyptus and peppercorn. Full bodied and elegant with medium acidity and long legs. Dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, cedar, vanilla, espresso, tobacco leaf, earth, herbs, eucalyptus, spices, peppercorn and mildew. Long finish with fine grained tannins and cherries. This is a gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon based Bordeaux blend from …

First of three bottles and this one just seemed off. It wasn't tainted, but this just never opened up despite trying over 3 hours. Black fruits, vanilla and spice. Will hope for better with the next two, but will wait a while on those.

Phenomenal, soft tannins very refine, great vintage, had 2 bottles of this and a bottle of 2010, the 2010 was not was inviting and harsher tannins compared to 2009, but still great

Decanted briefly. This continues to be one of my favorite vintages of Opus. The deep, silky palate has picked up notes of smoky earth and the palate is well balanced with warm acid and beautifully aged black and red fruit. As advertised, a wonderful fusion of old and new worlds.

March 2022 - Opus One Winery Tasting (Opus One Winery) : TN: Age is showing the most here out of the two flights. Nose with a lot of tertiary notes of leather, tobacco, and some earth as well as showing black fruit and minerality. On the palette, prune, dried cranberry, dried cherries, some herbaceous notes of tomato leaf. Still very Californian in style, but definitely a solid example of a well made aged Napa wine.

Decanted briefly. This is gorgeously balanced now, with deep, palate-filling red and black fruit. It showed particularly well with steaks. An excellent Opus.

Buccan 7-24-21. House celebration night. It was ok at first, but not great. Actually didn’t finish bottle. Not much fruit left.

Extracted and powerful. Great complexity and structure as usual for an Opus. Dark berries, licorice, eucalyptus, plum and cinnamon. Firm tannins. Long savory finish. This still feels a little too young for me, but we can argue about that. Drink 2025-2032. (IG)

Deep ruby color. Full nose with plush black fruit, vanilla and sweet caramel notes. Dry, rounded acidity, soft tannins, palate follows through. Full body. Great balance (save for the sweet note). Long finish. Definitely well-made, but more power rather than nuance.

Decanted over cocktails. Absolutely singing with a pure, bold, focused palate of blackcurrant, herbs, and earth. Tannins are relaxed and integrated with the moderate acid. Sometimes Opus feels more like a comfortable old friend but sometimes, as with this bottle, like a fresh infatuation. This is really a tremendous vintage of Opus One to drink through the rest of this decade.

Decanted two hours. Silky dense blackcurrant and spice on the palate with chewy tannins and a hint of oak. Not as sublime as my last bottle served without delay after decanting so I might recommend that at the moment. Still, a very good vintage for Opus showing beautifully now.
