Wow, what a beauty Decanted for 2 hrs, fully mature, structured and well balanced, nose and palate on high level with beginning tertiary flavours, no Need to wait longer, but no hurry necessary

This is going to be a gorgeous vintage of La Conseillante in time but this perfectly stored bottle remains incredibly primary and lacks the nuances of maturity. It's deep and layered with a certain fatness and fine velvety texture with wonderful flavors of dark blue fruits and sweet, spiced earth. The finish just does not yet reveal the complexities that I'm sure will come with time. Keep buried in the cellar for 5+ years. 93+

Outstanding. Opened 6 hours prior to drinking. Everything is there power subtlety fruit tertiary flavors. A very strong showing which I suspect will last a few more years. 1990 is truly a great year!

Decanted about an hour. Nice nose that blossomed a bit further over the next hour or so. Palate was fully mature, well integrated, good length and a pleasure to drink over a couple hours. Paired great with filet mignon and cheese course after.

Commanderie de Bordeaux: Winter Parlement - Right Bank Retrospective (The Minikahda Club, Mpls) : Dark red plus color. Splash double decanted, drank a glass over 90 minutes. Boy, on paper, this sure looked good. And you know, it was good, just not great. Ripe, full bodied, youthful for sure for a '90, shellac, hi toned, blackberry compote, black cherry, tart and big with celery seed and spearmint added in on the nose. Maybe with more air this would have impressed …

This outperformed my expectations. Fairly dark purple in the glass, with rich aromas, some lactate and dark fruits with hints of bell pepper. This bottle was remarkably young and well kept. Perfect cork. After an hour, it settles down a bit. Oak is relaxed and the structure is relatively polished. One can really appreciate the ripeness of the vintage in this wine. Raspberry compote on the palate with some sweetness. Full and long.

Mistakenly popped and poured. With the recent estate releases, they need to be decanted for a few hours. Without doubt, the best La Conseillante drinking, but some bottles are better than others. This wasn't quite up there with previous.

Two 1990s side by side. The Montrose (98pts) stole the show with a pristine bottle, fully on par with the best I have had. A perfect fusion of youthful dark fruit and sweet tertiary glory, delivered in an impeccable frame. This was the real deal. The Conseillante (96pts) had all the ingredients for absolute greatness with a broad aromatic spectrum, perfect delineation, well-measured ripeness, and great freshness but, from this bottle, was still quite young, missing the tertiary complexity. Like …

Wine comparisons for the night: 2000 La Conselliante (91) 2005 L'Evangile (93) 2010 Trotanoy (95) 1 hour decant. On the nose, there is a hint of fruit, but it remains very subtle. The palate mirrors the nose, showing delicate fruit with mild tannins, mild acidity, and a light body with minimal structure. Compared to the 2020 vintage, this feels less impressive. It’s an easy drinker, but ultimately not memorable. At $329, it does not live up to its price.

Tuesday Night Blind Tasting (Atlanta, GA) : Tasted blind. I thought it was left bank, but that due to its leaner style and herbal green finish, I called it St. Julien, 1995 Leoville Las Cases. Much to my surprise, Pomerol. Humbling!

(Blind) Immediately Bordeaux for the lush, sweet, dark fruits. I went Left Bank for the humid / smoky / slightly sauvage aromas but was incorrect. Seems to have some bell pepper, any Cabernet Franc here? Classic and lovely.

I will shout from the rooftop that 2000 Bordeaux is the best vintage ever. Still very young, but the early drinking window is superb. This was a big boy, decanted 4 hours, tobacco and espresso early, blue fruit and vanilla underlayer. 45 seconds easy on the palate, still had a few hard edges as still young, but great wine. 2000 Trotanoy may have this beat by a hair, but this is sexy, elegant and was so damn good!!!!

Pall Mall 67, Singapore, BYOB. Intriguing nose with cold ashes and ferrous elements. Still showing quite primary at nearly 30 years old. Great acid/ripeness balance with none of the chocolatey or coffee-like traits that characterize overripe Merlot. Given the opportunity I will add this to the cellar in a heartbeat.

Second bottle within 2 months, but as per my last note, I am trying to finish my stock sooner rather than later. Drank as part of a multi bottle lineup at 67 Pall Mall, tasting notes are as previous. Just opened and decanted for sediment, this was consumed over a relatively short period and was magnificent.

An estate cellar release 4 years ago, and I do feel it's the way to go forward with 35+ wines, and worth the premium for delivery. Apologies to my CT buddy, HK Bob, for forgetting the wine's provenance, when he did his review on the wine a few days ago. It is performing well, but only needs to have a splash decant to remove sediment, and needs to be stoppered between glasses. For myself, it is the greatest La Conseillante …

1998 vs. 2000 BDX showdown (SF - YH Beijing Restaurant) : Focused, complex nose with suave red fruits, flowers and savory herbs. One of the more slender wines of the night, with some overt pyrazines riding shotgun with the pretty, elegant red fruit, which made this a polarizing wine for some. I found it evocative and sensuous, bringing freshness and complexity, especially as it washed over the tongue with clay-like minerals and silky tannins. Some interesting white peach notes, but …

Superb aromatics of mature fruit, humidor, light wood smoke, damp underbrush and sandalwood which became more pronounced with an hour of air eventually giving way more to coffee, leather and tobacco tones around the three hour mark. Lithe, silky predominantly tertiary-fruited mid-weight palate with a cedar-infused slightly abbreviated finish. While still a wonderful wine, I did enjoy the nose more than the palate and suspect this wine's very best days may be in the rear-view mirror. One bottle left which …

1998 vs. 2000 BDX showdown (SF - YH Beijing Restaurant) : Much more primary than the 98. Big nose - more masculine than I'm used to from Conseillante. Plummy, rich, beautiful black fruit with good acidity and mineral freshness, just a bit monolithic to me today. Probably needs 10-15 years to show everything it has. 93++

1998/2000 Right Bank Bordeaux and Graves Dinner (YH Beijing - SF) : Unadulterated and straightforward blackberry on the nose. Lots of blue fruit on the palate, leaning towards the plummy and simple. A little monolithic and dense at this point. Maybe this just needs more time to develop complexity, but not super interesting right now.

1998/2000 Right Bank Bordeaux and Graves Dinner (YH Beijing - SF) : This is absolutely terrific. Tobacco, green bell pepper, and some blackberry on the nose, slightly reminiscent of Cabernet Franc (though the cepage is only 20% Cab Franc with the rest Merlot). Super elegant and finessed on the palate, with silky tannins and surprisingly reddish fruit. Acidity is on point and the wine is just flat out more-ish.

This is just starting it's drinking window, and is now approachable with a few hours in the decanter. The nose is a little primary, but is aromatic with blackcurrant, blueberry, with tobacco and floral notes. The palate needs to flesh out, but already it is recognisable as a top notch Pomerol. The balance and length on the finish are excellent, and it will only continue to improve. Could this be the new 1990? Will revisit in 12 months. 94+

Two hour decant. Even after decanting, the wine was tight, very green, only a little fruit, very little aroma. Given my last bottle, which was nearly primary in its fruit, this was disconcerting. One night in the refrigerator, and it was like a new wine. Nice high-toned aromas, blackberry and black raspberry with licorice and tobacco accents. It had really fleshed out, although the structure was still evident. Much more enjoyable than the first night. This came from a different …

Shows some age with bricking and some tertiary fruit elements. Lovely herbal nose of pipe tobacco and slightly green herbal notes. Quite lifted and elegant. Palate lacks a little vigor and a bit muddled—but still quite enjoyable. I enjoyed this a bit more a decade ago but is still Delightful now. I wouldn’t hold—best to to start drinking if holding.

Decanted for about an hour. Opaque dark garnet hue. Nose of beef blood, searing ripe plum, cassis, blackberry, and high-pitched floral scents. Initially imploded dark plum fruit slowly deepening to reveal primary black currant, hedonistic ripe plum, tobacco, and sauvage on the palate. Ample acidity and smoothed tannin. Long finish of fresh red currant, plum, spice, and earth. Perhaps not exhibiting ultimate refinement but full of animale and pleasure nonetheless.

Chez Bastian (Chicago, IL) : This far surpassed the 1998 Lafleur alongside. Darker fruit, with far more expressiveness on the palate. The fruit is black and sweet, with a touch of an earthiness that I really love. Youthful, but in a great place now; I'm on the lookout for some of these.

A great fill and a fairly good bottle. But I've had better. It was very good right out of the bottle but when left to linger in the glass, the fruit faded and the wine developed a bit of astringency and lean mid palate. However, all of the good stuff was there so I'm still rating it well.
