Nice Cab. Dark fruit, touch of chocolate, just good down to earth cab!

Jill's 31st celebration with EVERYONE at the crib! (Talman Avenue) : Out of 3L. Woodford brought this over for Jill's birthday. Cork was seeping but wine was pretty solid - definitely not flawed.

It smells of the ocean to me. Ocean and wind. But not the funky, dead-fish wind. The cool breeze smell. A juicy breeze. A wind with mist so I can see “the wind in my eyes.” This cab’s got strawberries and blackberries and something green. It’s got earth and a coffee bean. Oh, what an interesting taste. It’s like melon and something grape. It’s silky, it’s smooth, it has bit of cassis. It has linger on the finish of a …

This wine was decanted, tasted immediately thereafter, then aerated overnight in the refrigerator. It was then serially tasted on the second evening. The robe is deep-to-opaque purple with a violet rim. Clean, quite intense nose with aromas of dark plums, currants, cedar and spice. Full-bodied on the palate, with low acidity and medium, silky smooth tannins. The flavors are black fruit-dominated and the vanilla/oak contribution is fairly well-integrated. The middle palate thins a bit but the finish is medium in …

Running with the pack on this one. Dinner at Asia de Cuba restaurant, NYC. Among the choices offered by the glass, this appeared to be worth a try, especially given the vintage. Color medium-dark red, medium-full body. I'm guessing this came from a bottle that had been opened earlier in the day, because the bouquet was quite open, with dark cherries, cassis, a little leather note that surprised me, and oak. Straightforward and less exciting on the palate, with red …

Soft, fruity, quaffable. Not terrible, but nothing to get excited about, and doesn't offer good value. Pass.

Popped and poured. This sees too much oak relative to the fruit, which isn't particularly concentrated or forward. With a little air, however, it does fall into decent balance and you do have a drinkable if unremarkable wine. Needless to say, at 17 bones you typically want something more than "drinkable if unremarkable." 82.

Westwood CC 20 Wines under $20 (Westwood CC, Vienna VA) : no nose at all - you would have thought there was warm water in the glass... the fruit on the palate was muted... the wine is pleasant and unlikely to offend anyone, primarily because it doesn't offer enough expression to do so.
