Joh. Jos. Prum, Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese, Mosel

Noticed the cork was leaking so decided to pull it. Not much happening on the nose but plenty of acid. Disappointing.

Chicago; 11/8/2025-11/21/2025 (Chicago, IL) : This is darkly golden in colour and I get the sense that this is pushing the ripeness a little too far here. Even by modern standards, this might even be an Auslese. It's very ripe, showing lots of golden fruit that is very ripe and sweet. Relatively soft in structure, this has some mineral backbone, but it's mostly hidden behind the flab of the vintage.

Happily, this bottle was even more complex and longer on the palate than the 9/18 bottle. Still amazingly fresh at 20 years of age.

Honeyed Riesling with a broad citrus character, mandarin, lime, and preserved lemon. Drinking very well right now. Doesn’t seem tired yet but I’d recommend drinking in the near term.

Stunningly good, perfect age, even if still a bit young (tired of drinking past-due Riesling at 50+ years!). Deep golden color, lovely petrol, zingly candied citrus, mineral, dried orange, orange peel, balanced sweetness, in harmony, a real treat. W/German Bratwurst at S&L.

These have been so consistently great, every time we've opened them, and this was no expection. Densely fruited, plenty of acidity, rich but not heavy, dark honey notes and some savory character that I sometimes get on GH from JJ Prum. A little sweet for a spatlese and not as crisp and lively as I would like, but beautiful and delicious, nonetheless. Better on the palate than the nose. If this had more acidity and zip, it would be glorious.

Didn't catch the AP... Big tasting, a lot of big Napa, this was clearly WOTN... Peach jam, pineapple, citrus candy, floral honey, hints of pungent herbs, brown spice, puerh tea... huge on the palate, immensely complex and deep, sweet and lusciously textured, dense and concentrated, long and balanced, the acid structure is incredible, crazy stuff, so good, still feels young...

Nose: A bit subdued, but eventually preserved lemon, pepper, nettle, and celery greens (?!) came through. Very interesting. Palate: Ripe peach, dried apricot, wild honey, kerosene, strong minerality, some sweetness that wasn't entirely balanced by the acidity. Expansive in the mouth and had a lovely texture. The cork was in excellent condition, and the wine was even better. The nose was an enchanting mix of ripe apricot, honey, peaches, and minerals, bursting with life. While the acidity was good, it wasn’t exceptional. This Riesling was the perfect celebratory bottle for my birthday, thoroughly enjoyed and truly unforgettable.

When I opened this, I was ready to denounce it as yet another German bottle of riesling-flavored syrup. But it’s far too good to be so cynical. The wine is too sweet, to be sure, and the acidity and alcohol body are inadequate. But the flavors—from petrol and slate to mango and rambutan—are divine.

JJ Prum - 2021 range tasting : Apricot, orange, slate, and peach. Noticeable sweetness balanced by a strong core of acidity. When this settles down I suspect it will be very very good.

Deep yellow. Honeyed aromas with a pure beacon of fruit and early high toned petrol. Light to medium body, Auslese level richness and sweetness, a potpourri of papaya, stone fruit, and tangerine with some slate running through it and decent acidity. Delicious, succulent fruit, but somewhat loosely structured for a Prom wine.

Nose of peach, slate, zingy. Tasty. Honeysuckle. A hint of mint. Hints of cumin and sponti on the palate more than the nose. Good but not super exciting for me. But I consistently prefer WS over GH so keep that in mind.

wow. amazingly lithe. nearly clear in the glass. rich expressive fruit jump from the glass. more than enough ripeness and rs. super high acid. barely sweet--just very concentrated. not getting any botrytis. could pass for some producers'/vintage's Kabi drinking enjoyably now but there's a terseness and youthful disjointedness

Medium yellow with some residual spritz. Luscious aromas of brown sugar, honey, and stone fruit. Light but pretty sappy for Mosel Spatlese. Moderately sweet-it seemed sweeter at its level than the Auslese tasted a couple of weeks ago due to lower acidity. Nectarine and yellow apple fruit without much slate. Excellent and fully developed with some petrol eventually showing up. Glorious fruit but could use a tad more backbone.

Sichuan and Rieslings (Taste of Sichuan, Beaverton OR) : The nose is showing maturity, but still with some freshness as the tones are more rounded and working together with Quince, red apples, eggs, peaches, pears, nectarines, saline, mineral notes, and yellow flowers. Riesling Study 011 (Pizzeria Beddia) : Shared at #rieslingstudy011 By chance had this right after the Schaefer above. Remarkably electric. I tasted bananas, which I've never noted in a riesling before. When I think of this wine I picture its sweetness being held up by a thin ribbon of acidity; this is I think what people mean when they speak of tension in wines.

A night in Ngaio (Trelissick Crescent, Ngaio, Wellington, New Zealand) : Beautiful riesling that shows an impeccable balance between sugar and the classic Germanic acidity. A touch of so2 does not get in the way of the gorgeous fruit and modulate finish. Mineral, lime, honey, with lifted wet slate notes. A gorgeous Auslese that feels as if it is in early to mid maturity.

Too sweet and not enough acidity or alcohol warmth for me. I don’t understand why a winemaker would stop the fermentation at 8% alcohol to make a syrupy wine that lacks balance. It’s a shame because these are obviously great grapes.
