Cockburn's, Vintage Port

Easy drink, raisin caramel flavor, plum chocolate aromas, sweet wine.

NV Cockburns Special Reserve. Bottled 2019 from a 1L bottle. Semi-dry, red currants, soft tannins on the palate, with a gentle warm spirit and a drying lingering finish. I like the off-dry profile as it makes enjoying a few glasses pleasurable. 85 Points

Fruit cake and wood and alcohol heat, in a nutshell. Take those words at face value and doesn’t sound appealing, but a pleasure to drink, albeit a basic pleasure compared to other fortified options.

Lekker, dadels, honingdrop, zacht warm met een scherpe hint.

Deep ruby colour. Medium and developing nose with red cherry, dark plum, fig, vanilla, chocolate and orange marmalade. Medium taste of dark plum, vanilla, fig and orange marmalade. Medium long and sweet finish. Medium acidity. Full body. A good Ruby Port that lacks some complexity and length. Drink now. Goes well with cheeses or chocolate.

Love this. It's a non-vintage, but has been in our cellar five years and is still incredibly rich with red fruits. Truly wonderful.

Deep purple color. Classic nose of roasted figs, plum sauce, smoky earth, clove and cedar. Full but fresh, smooth tannins and moderate acidity. Plum cake, figs, the fruit mixes with notes of potpourri, tar, cedar, clove and tobacco. Yummy stuff.

The third Port in a trio I recently purchased this one is a Special Reserve. It's way more opaque than the Ruby I tasted previously. The nose has nuts, lots of them, plus rich blueberry compote, blackberry jam, prunes, stewed cherry and raspberry. A virtual melange of red, black and blue fruit. Simple and super pleasant. Reinforces that all port is pretty damn good port.

Does what it says on the tin, with medium bodied character, bright cherry and plum fruit, cocoa and christmas pudding and a soft, but not hot, finish.

{375ml, cork, 20%, A$13} This is pretty simple stuff. Basic red fruits, enlivened with brandy spirit, off-dry-ish, mostly disappoints with lack of depth and finish; overall a light/medium-bodied fortified of no real distinction. An object lesson in getting rid of the inferior barrels, but still under the brand name; not sure of the long-term value in that approach. Not a wine I'd buy again, even at the bargain price; spend twice the money and get something better.

Bought on the basis that the current batch of NV Special Reserve had won a silver medal at the International Wine Challenge 2017. Oh dear. I wonder which specially selected samples they were tasting? To be fair, it shows decent fruit - mainly cherry (with maraschino) and prunes with vanilla and some slightly woody flavours. Easy to quaff but it is a very ordinary example with little to distinguish it from a host of cheaper ruby ports.

Etihad Business CLass & Lounges; 11/20/2017-11/24/2017 (Sydney, Abu Dhabi, Frankfurt) : Bitey cherry notes. Sweet brambly fruit; lots of heat. Warm, fairly even balance on the tongue, off-dry if you like. Medium weight. Rather one-dimensional in character, with fresh grapey flavours and a brandied heat. Not much back palate; short/medium finish other than the alcohol. Gosh, port notes are a challenge!

Dark ruby color; aromatic, baked berry, plum jam, spice nose; tasty, baked berry, plum jam, spice palate with good balance; medium-plus finish (19.5% alcohol) 88+ points

Douro Samples : Dark ruby colored. Nose of saucy black cherries, fig cookies, vanilla and dark chocolate shavings. On the palate, this shows fig cookies, roasted plums, sweet coffee and chocolate shavings on a frame of light tannins and low acidity. Notes of vanilla and ginger snap, this is a simple, hedonistic wine for the price.

Simple ripe dark fruits, jammy with burning 20% abv. Extremely sweet molasses & dried fruits with smoky background, full body. A red wine with sweet white body.

Serviceable ruby port. Clean and true pure fruit flavours not a lot of complexity.

Cannot remember when or where or how long ago but was in the mood for port and wanted to keep it simple so I pulled this. Light for a ruby found it thin at the edges. 2016 Port Harvest Tour; 9/18/2016-9/25/2016 (Portugal) : Medium purple in color, with lightening on the very edges. Primary dark fruit on the nose with some underlying herbal notes. Massive tannins and body. Blueberry and mocha notes on the palate.

The wine is a deep ruby colour. The wine has a pronounced aroma of ripe black fruits; damons, cherries and plums, almost jammy and very, very concentrated. Some smoke and pepper. The wine is youthful. On the palate the wine is sweet with medium+ acidity, high alcohol, full bodied, medium soft, ripe tannins and a medium+ intensity with a medium finish+. This is a very good quality Ruby Port.

Lovely!, still alive and kickin'. A bit alcoholic nose at first, then as the hours pass by, the bouquet opens up, lovely coffee nose. Uncomparably smooth on palate. Endless finish. Wonderful bouquet from the nearly empty decanter days after.
