Hints of black fruits and new oak on the nose. Medium-bodied, this seems to be of two minds. The fruit tannin seems completely resolved and lovely, but there's a harsh overlay of wood tannin that makes the wine overly dry. This wine was terribly woody at release and I surmised at the time it probably wouldn't age well. (I only put one bottle down) All in all, this isn't bad. 86

Pulled my last bottle of this. I haven’t been drinking much Syrah of late but this wine made me remember how much I do like it. Nice color and expansive nose, palate of leather and earth. Very full wine but not overblown. Went quite well with food.

89-91: The previous notes on this wine are all over the place, which seems to match my experience. This wine is quite aromatic, I get the classic glycerin/bacon and smokey notes particularly, with red/black fruit on the palate. Tannins are fine, finish lingers. Slightest hint of effervescence on the pop, it blew off quickly. This wine is very good, but a touch volatile. Wife hated it.

Quite lovely and unexpected. I remember opening this several years ago and thinking it was flabby, too big, and just crude. But my oh my, with some age it certainly has bloomed. Deep garnet color and a nose that just fills the room as you pour of a fruit orchard if you’ve ever picked your own. On palate, nicely integrated fruit and acidity. Showing yummy plums, cherries, with deeper tones of forest floor. Nice long finish. Very enjoyable but alas …

A little dirty, a little funky, and some nice red fruit. Not much tannin, decent acid.

Something odd happened in this last one where a secondary fermentation occurred. There was a slight pressure release when the cork was removed, and a light effervescence on the tongue. Especially on the first night, that marred what was always a delicious wine. Interestingly, by night two it seemed almost back to normal, though leaning toward stewed. Still, the tangy dark fruit and bright acidity were intact. Drink up.

Every time I come back to this wine I continue to be blown away at how amazing it is. To put into context, I opened this after friends brought a 2004 Clos Des Papes that we decanted for two hours before drinking (and was probably the best ‘neuf I’ve ever had). I wanted a bottle that didn’t need much breathing time and could stand up to this other superstar. Popped open the Stolpman and it was like drinking another Rhône …

Typical Stolp syrah, barnyard nose and well integrated fruit. Aging and drinking well

Aging well, this is an in my wheelhouse syrah, from the funky nose to the dark lingering fruit.

Same notes as March, but on this bottle the finish added this weird acetone finish that pretty much ruined it for me.

Central Coast Syrah for sure, but with a lot of Northern Rhone elements. Medium bodied, some funk on the nose, metallic, blackberry, olive. Palate mirrors the nose, but adds some brighter red fruit. Missing a little power in the mid, but age may have traded the power for the complexities gained. Good acidity, no tannin presence noted. In a really interesting spot, will pop my last one soon.

OMG! Aroma of Green Olive and graphite, meat. Simply a wonderful nose. Ruby turning very slightly brickish. Medium body. Rounded tannin. The legs are slow. There is light sediment in the bottle. Medium body. The wine has satin-like texture. The wine finishes medium+. The wine has medium+ acidity. I SO wish this was NOT my last bottle. Drinking perfectly now. Perfectly.

CORKED We have drunk a fair amount of their estate syrah over the years. Two of the last three bottles (also a 2013) have been corked.

Second bottle and it is as good if not better than the first one opened couple of months ago (see my previous notes)... Opens with with smell of barnyard and smoke, meat and black plums, lots of spices. As it opens - more fruits are coming alive. Nice structure, balanced and tasty, medium finish. Very good wine.

Most comments have this spot on. Gamey, barnyard-y, funky - for sure. But don't let the initial nose fool you, this is a real powerhouse that helps to define the uniqueness of santa ynez Syrah. Stolpman lights it up with this bottling.

Dark and dense, gamy nose with red fruits, plums, cedar and earth. Palate is balanced, everything in place, good acidity, tasty tannin, medium finish. Very good wine, probably has to be drunk now or soon.

This wine threw me for a loop when tasted blind a few nights ago. So dirty and barnyard-y, I figured it was old world from the get go. I mean, crazy manure on the aromatics. Big black cherry fruits and peppery overtones. Charcoal and tar as well. The flavors echo from the nose, with big black cherry and smokey flavors, barnyard manure, and prunes. This is a big and bold wine, and if I consider it, too ripe to be …
