Second time with this wine and first time this wasn’t a good bottle (somewhat oxidised). Thankfully this time lucky as the bottle was pristine (bottle 2320/3193 attribue a Jacques et Fiona Thienpont). Colour speaks of some age with browning, red core. The nose already tells you where this is headed - sweet sour interplay of the highest order. It’s richly umami laden, macerated cherries, slight notes of horse sweat, hint of musk. The bottle that I/we least preferred in a mini vertical of four vintages. Initially it appeared quite heady and on the verge of oxidation. Thankfully fortune turned with time/air and it turned the corner and notes of freshly cut flower and glossy red cherry emerged. I would be inclined to say that this bottle would probably have been better if decanted based on the experience. Also maybe it wasn't a perfect bottle. Looking forward to revisit this.

Has some Hoisin and beef stock notes along with sarsaparilla root, coffee and dark fruits. It is full, sweet and textured with good intensity and plenty of spice.

Acker April 2019 (Marea in NYC) : Not terribly flawed, but clearly off. They pulled this bottle as a result, but sometimes part of wine is trying the stuff that isn't full on as well (e.g. we asked to try it anyway). This came across as mostly just tired. Not awful, but just missing all of the brightness you would expect.

This bottle was showing marked sur-maturitee on the nose and that extended to the palate. Funky, clunky with real torrefaction. Perhaps this had seen some heat because it seems out of step with others' experiences.

Huge success for the vintage. Lends itself more to aromatics and nuance rather than more palate and structure driven examples. Needs a lot more time.

Quite nice darker fruit, good fine structure, with a silkiness and creaminess on the palate. If I didn't know what this was, I might have guessed a Morey wine, with its somewhat darker profile. Tasty and enjoyable.

Dinner for Blair Walter at Noble Rot (Noble Rot, Wellington, NZ) : Mike provided this lovely wine. Even just on bouquet, clearly a high quality Vosne, with spice rack, fruit and lifted floral perfumes. In the mouth, crystalline and pure dark berries. A classy wine I thought might be another 2006. Very Vosne. "In its prime for drinking - all softness and charm" said Blair.

Definitely a step up or two. Deep alluring wide spectrum aromas of blue and darker fruits intermixed w lavender, rose petal, hoisin sauce, roasted peanuts. Resolved tannin, good harmony and inner perfume of spices, long lingering. As good as it is, I didn't get the same excitement compared to what I had last time.

Fantastic wine, one of the best Liger-Belair wines that I have ever tasted. So much detail and nuance at every step. The nose just leaps out, Vosne spice galore. Wonderful, opulent wine. Incredible depth and structure that just works so well. This is incredible right now.

La Grande Paulée at Cabotte (Cabotte, 48 Gresham Street, London EC2V 7AY) : From magnum. A gigantic wine, rich and opulent with meaty flavours. The scent of gunpowder. A stupendously aromatic finish. I think the hotline to The Almighty may get connected to this wine in time. Fabulous wine.

Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind (Chevalier Fine Wines - Chicago IL) : Small glass, brief note. Black fruit with sweet spice, clearly in a very ripe package, possibly slightly more advanced than I expect from the best 2006s. Rather firm finish. Good balance overall. We had an interesting discussion whether this is at its peak or fading or has upside. Tough to say for certain, but if I had one bottle I would hold it a few more years before …

Sexy nose, very ripe purple and blue fruit. Hint of white pepper, smoke. Fat, round, with ample fruit. Very silky tannins. This is great now, I wouldn't wait too long with it.

Drank with the wine maker, surprisingly this bottle is holding up well after 6 years! Very pure fruited, fragrant with red floral notes, light palate. Better drink now than later.

Drank alongside 06 Colombiere, the nose is quite similar but the palate is definitely deeper with more layers of structures. Pure fruited with lovely and deep floral nose, drinking well now and should be able to age for the medium term.

French and Italian wine gathering (The Grill Room at Rosewood DC) : Someone mentioned Alchemist. Louis Michel indeed as a magic touch. Opulent nose displaying sweet red fruits, perfectly ripe raspberry, strawberry, rich light caramel and sweet spices. Excellent concentration, beautifully layered rich red fruits, nicely integrated acidity and tannins, and lovely long sweet finish. As usual for Louis Michel’s wine, it is very approachable with generous sweet red fruit driven nose and rich round palate. Really enjoyable.

Tuesday Cellar Visits in Burgundy - Remoissenet, Bernard Moreau, Pousse d'Or, Comte Liger-Belair (Cote d'Or) : Tasted at the domaine. Popped-and-poured and served blind. Ripe red cherry and berry aromas and flavors, but very balanced. Long textured finish. I thought this Petits Monts (close) but was way off on the vintage (thinking 2010). This is a rockstar 2006.

Completely ready to drink and very mature. Browning edges, sweet fruit and resolved tannins. Good? Yes. But very advanced for a 10 year old.

It's among the best LB VR Colombiere. Bouquet is not Roch/Leroy type perfume but very strong and energetic. Fruits are delicious and acidity is in balance. Nonetheless, still prefer the LB VR village more than this.

Opened 24 hours prior. Initially, delicious bright red fruit and wonderful vosne spice. Forward but with such balance, no harshness from oak. Quite elegant. Light but not lacking on the palate. 24 hours later, adds a layer of depth and complexity. Punches at a 1er cru Dujac level. Delicious. Wonderful with roast squab.

At Nimb. Very open and seductive nose. Elegant notes of light red fruit, cinnamon, cloves, and something plastic I can't put words on. On the palate, it is very easy to drink, good balance, low tannins, not at all closed, and good length. Lovely for a village!
